A Wednesbury pub which was the scene of a brawl today escaped losing its licence but will be forced to close earlier.
Sandwell Council’s licensing panel reviewed the licence of The George Inn in Wednesbury after a request from West Midlands Police.
Inspector Pat Smythe told the panel that the Upper High Street pub had a far higher rate of recorded incidents than nearby bars.
Last Friday a man was left with a fractured eye socket, the hearing at Sandwell Council House was told.
Inspector Smythe said: “The doorstaff are not in control and are not looking after the security sufficiently.”
The pub is owned Punch Taverns.
The panel reduced the opening hours to 9am-1am on Mondays to Saturday for a temporary 90 day period. After this it could return to the hours of 9am-1am Monday to Wednesday and 9am-2am Thursday to Saturday. The pub will continue to trade from 11am-midnight on Sunday.
