Mowbray a safer bet than Megson

megson.jpgFormer Albion manager Gary Megson is at a higher risk of the sack than current boss Tony Mowbray, according to the bookies.

Mowbray has been made a 10-1 shot to be the first Premier League manager to leave his job.

Those odds make Mowbray fifth favourite with bookmakers Blue Square, who reckon Bolton manager Megson is joint second favourite at 6-1.

West Ham’s Alan Curbishley is 5-1 favourite, with Kevin Keegan of Newcastle also 6-1 and Everton’s David Moyes 8-1.

Villa’s Martin O’Neill is a 33-1 outsider to be the first for the axe while Tony Pulis, manager of top flight new boys Stoke, is locked together at 12-1 with former Wolves midfielder Paul Ince, now boss of Blackburn.

Alan Alger, PR Manager at Blue Square, said: “Although many people would expect the likes of Tony Mowbray, Tony Pulis and Phil Brown to be favourites for the sack race, they are actually in relatively safe positions having recently gained promotion to the Premier League.

“The fans know it’ll be a tough season and will back their manager.

“Managers such as Gary Megson and current favourite Alan Curbishley are actually under far more pressure, as the fans are a lot more expectant.

“West Ham are an established Premier League club with money to spend. People will be looking for them to show early signs of improving on last year’s 10th place.

“There has been a lot of money on David Moyes over the last couple of days, as a result of a bit of turmoil at Goodison Park.

“Everton have failed to secure major signings and Moyes has still not signed his new contract. There is also a lot of early money being placed on Kevin Keegan.

“Although the fans hold him in a very high regard, Newcastle is a famously temperamental club and Keegan has failed to secure any really big summer signings.

“With a very tough start to the season, including away games against Arsenal and Manchester United, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see Kevin leave the club.

“Martin O’Neill’s job at Villa is definitely one of the safest in the Premier League. He had a tremendous campaign last season and appears to have the full backing of Randy Lerner.”

Odds for the first manager to leave his job: -

5-1 Alan Curbishley; 6-1 Kevin Keegan, Gary Megson; 8-1 David Moyes; 10-1 Tony Mowbray; 12-1 Paul Ince, Roy Hodgson, Phil Brown, Tony Pulis, Gareth Southgate; 14-1 Harry Redknapp; 20-1 Juande Ramos, Mark Hughes; 25-1 Luis Felipe Scolari, Rafa Benitez; 33-1 Martin O’Neill, Steve Bruce, Roy Keane; 50-1 Sir Alex Ferguson; 66-1 Arsene Wenger.

Not a chance that Mogga will get sacked this season. He could walk out when Southgate or Strachan get sacked (but I really hope not), but why the hell would JP want to sack his best asset?

  2. Happy_baggie said:

Managers are often sacked as a result of fans unrest (i.e Alladyce) so on that basis I think ToMo would be safe.

Other managers are sacked due to unrealsitic demands from the club (Billy Davies) and i think JP is aware of our limitations.

other managers are sacked cos they are just useless (insert your personal fave) - again I think JP and the club know how good TM is…

So hopefully, the gaffer is safe, whatever happens - unless we win the league, in which case expect chelski to come knocking !!!!

No chance Mowbray will get sacked. You are absolutely expected to get relegated. Megson has got huge boots to fill with Allrdyce getting them in Europe and then narrowly avoiding relegation. Bolton are a bigger club than Albion and our an established premiership side the agreed that the pressure is on Megson. Wish both sides all the best.

Seasons not started and already your manager is tipped for the chop.

I don’t think Mowbray has really been tested in terms of his qualities as a manager for you lot.

This season will make or break him.

  5. Greeno said:

What a ridiculous non-story this is… You would get Rafa Benitez would have been more likely to get sacked last season than Tony Mowbray - must mean he’s a better manager then… idiots. It’s all circumstantial i’m afraid.

    Thanks in anticipation.

Benitez at 25/1 is the long shot value imo. A bad start would see the press jump straight on to his back. The boardroom arguments will surface again too…..

    4. I agree to a certain level. I feel Mowbray inherited much of his title winning squad BUT..he also lost key players and replaced them with better team players and when they went 1-0 up against us at Molineux the way they kept the ball was impressive. However, I don’t think Mowbray has brought in enough quality to stay up and with JP looking for the Exit I think the Albion will go down. Jury very much still out TOMO but impressive so far.

Clapham Wolf- “I don’t think Mowbray has really been tested in terms of his qualities as a manager for you lot”. You don’t rate your league or your club then!!

I know we are talking Premiership here … but just for interest what odds for MM ?

Must be a better bet !

  11. Happy_baggie said:

Is it just me or are the wolves fans really getting thicker ?

“Your manager is tipped for the sack” - no he isn’t.

This story actually says he isn’t. Every manager is in the list of potential sackings - Ferguson is on the list (albeit at the bottom), so is Wenger ect….

Mowbray is 5th apparently (which i disagree with - the guy is a genius) - which is better than your good friend paul ince !!

The tedium of certain morons posting anti albion stuff on every thread just makes me long for the end of the school hols when us grown ups can go back to discussing real footy issues.

  12. laughingwolf said:

happy_bogie- I am a Wolves fan and if you read my comment no.3 this is making a valid point. But to say he’s a genius is a little bit far fetched to be honest. no.10 I agree aswell Mc Carthy has to deliver or he will be gone. Back to happy I think Incey will be given time and do a cracking job the blackburn board are very supportive and I think he will be fine, in a way I hope it doesnt go too well cause I want him at Wolves. Now Ince was a genius on the pitch.

I picked up that comment too Happy,
“tipped for the chop” but never let the truth stand in the way of a good dig.

Let`s for one moment read the article from a dingle perspective, and having done so, we conclude that TM is indeed walking a managerial tightrope, and his P45 is a destiny from which only Houdini could hope of escaping.
As we know, there are no poor bookies, however they do occasionally get things hopelessly wrong, a perfect example was when they jokingly installed Wolves as favourites for the championship last term.
As bad decisions go, that one was almost as profitable for me as it was hilarious.

  18. SUPERSTARDJWOLVES said:

Happy Baggie Its very ironic that you say that the wolves fans who come on the baggies site are morons, thick, etc etc where on the wolves site the majority of postings are done by albion fans like Terry Baggie who incidentally has a mental age of 3. So please dont spout rubbish on here having a pop at wolves fans were your lot aint much better.

So dont be so touchy, but again I would be if you have had an horrendous pre-season like the one Baggies are having at the moment!

Brilliant - a Wolves story entitled

‘Boss hails his Number 2 impact’

Finally, the E&D are posting the truth, he did have the impact of a giant number 2 last season didn’t he?! Just like the rest of the club, and I don’t think they’ll make much of a ’splash’ next season either.

The dingles old favorite Ince will be gone first. The players are already in revolt at Blackburn. He has signed 47 year old Robbie Fowler who played 3 games for Cardiff last year, and wants to sign that brilliant ex Wolves star Keith Andrews.

I wish Ince had have gone to Wolves. He would have been that poor he would have made Mad Mick look like Brian Clough.

    All help appreciated Shadrag.

    Who cares who sacks who!!!!!!!

Football must be the only type of employment where a manager gets the sack and has compensation for the privilage!!!.

TM should be about 1000-1 because he aint got a chance of being sacked next season ( unless he puts one on JP’s nose)he may well leave when southgate gets the sack (although I believe TM is a man of principle and see his contract out)

  35. Nedball said:

In fact, don’t bother….you bore me, and I realise that I’ve just egged you on.

Well done Shadrag, you got a rise out of me ever so briefly.

  36. Fenwolf said:

I think MM will be gone before TM !

  37. Cyril Randle said:

Let’s just suppose, and I shall include the Wulfies in this, Baggies do get relegated. In 2007 ToMo took over with the season part gone, we got to the play-off final. In 2008, after losing ’stars’ we won the League. What sort of sense does it make to sack a bloke who can do that in so short a space of time, turn a doubting crowd of supporters all with their glass empty, into disciples, 20,000 of them. JP is also far from daft. He knows that he has unearthed a gem in TM. Get this, and get it good. We want him to stay, whatever happens, because we know we could come back again and again, with scintillating football. If TM left, would you Wulfies like him? Of course you would. Quod Erat Demonstrandum.

Regards the article, errm ok, slow news day, my bet for first sacking at those odds would be Roy Hodgson, anyone who signs Zubi booby needs to seriously consider retirement and a bit of fishing!!

New to this but why are there so many Dingles on the Albion threads? Do they want to join us on the Brummie Road?

  47. The Real Bully. said:

    21 AJ.
Don’t really know how you judge this bigger club thing but as Bolton have had several continuous years in the Prem while we’ve been in the other place, yes at the moment they are a bigger club than us. If you try to judge on other things history, trophies crowd size, liquidations etc, it gets very messy and a bit silly, so best ignore it.

  48. Throstlehead said:

    42. You need to get your facts right. No Albion fans turned on Megson. He fell out with the chairman and they parted company. Most sensible Albion fans hold him in great regard and are grateful for what he did at WBA. He grabbed us by the collar and dragged us back to the big league. He could do a good job for Wolves. He gets rid of the time wasters and light weights.

As for Mowbray, he won’t be sacked even if Albion are relegated.

Who’s bigger, who’s best. Only thing that counts is on the pitch and the league tables gives you the pecking order.

  49. Michael said:

    48. as i said short memory you sandwell fans and you post just proves it. most you sandwell fans wanted him out, and the point i was making is you cant live on what people have done in the past. and im not suggesting tony moany will be sacked if you get relegated, but one thing is for sure if you are doing badly in the Prem then you will soon turn on him.
its amazing how you all said Derby should not have been in the prem last saeson but know you take a different attitude.
