Walsall manager Jimmy Mullen hailed “unsung hero” Dwayne Mattis as he completed his preparations for the big kick-off on Saturday at Yeovil.
After the 2-0 win over Albion at the Banks’s Stadium last night, Mullen picked out Mattis for special praise and he looks certain to figure in what is becoming a hot bed of competition in mid-field.
Mattis was at Walsall last season on loan from Barnsley but after four performances, he broke his leg and he returned to Barnsley. Now he is a permanent fixture at the Banks’s Stadium and Mullen said: “The work he does off the ball is tremendous.
“He breaks up so much when the opposition get into our third of the pitch and yet it goes unnoticed.
“It’s a shame really that he does not get the recognition he deserves, but he does such a fantastic job.”
Mullen admitted that he has a selection headache as the countdown continues to Saturday, but he added: “It is a nice headache to have.
“It might have not been the strongest Albion team we could have faced, but we only play what’s in front of us and we deservedly won the game.
“It was a good performance all round and what they have said to me tonight is that they are ready for Saturday.”
But Mullen, does have injury concerns. Keeper Clayton Ince came off with a hamstring injury and striker Michael Ricketts has a groin strain.

He’s a mighty fine player, A fine fine player. I was well chuffed when we signed him and I still am. He could play much higher than this and hopefully he will with us.
As an earlier detractor of JM, I have to admit he appears to have put together a good team………so a good start Jimmy, well done!
