Harte turns down Wolves contract

ian-harte.jpegTrial defender Ian Harte has rejected the chance of a short-term contract at Wolves.

The 64-capped Republic of Ireland international had been offered what is believed to be a month-to-month deal, with the incentive of something longer should he impress.

The 30-year-old ex-Leeds and Sunderland man has turned down the chance following a three-week trial.

Manager Mick McCarthy said: “If he’d have come, I’d have been thrilled, but he hasn’t, so be it. He wanted to stay, but it was only a short term deal and it was up to him what he wanted to do.”

I’m surprised we didn’t give him at least a one year contract, good left backs don’t grow on trees and he would be good enough for where we are at the moment.

  2. wanderers89 said:

Looked good in Pre-Season, thought he could do a job for us if coming off the bench to slow the game down if we were winning but MM only wanted to give him a short contract, hope he finds somewhere.

  3. haggstone wolf said:

Perhaps he didnt have enough confidence in his own ability to perform and therefore earn a better deal. Just as well we didnt offer him a 12 month deal in that case. No great loss.

  4. Martywolf said:

Whats does he want then….? Good biz Wolves.

An opportunity for a player to trade a bit of give and take and off he goes. Sounded to much like hard work for him and his Harte wasn’t in it…. bum bum.

    Jog on Harte. Bye bye.

  5. Ad Mant said:

now, if he was a striker…

anyone think thats it ? Summer spending over ? Really chuffed so far with Stearman and Iwelumo, but cant help think we’re short a defender and midfielder.

    Come on you Wolves !

  6. Baldeaglewolf said:

Can’t understand why he wasn’t offered something a bit more lucrative than a derisory month to month contract. He is after all an experienced international player who is still only 30 years old and I am sure he would have done a good job for Wolves…especially in the penalty and free kicks department. Here’s hoping that we don’t live to rue the day!

I don’t blame him. If he had of got any sort of injury he’d probably find himself out of contract, and looking for a new club!

  10. wembley66 said:

How many left backs do we need..? Elokobi, Gray,Collins and Dan Jones can all stake a claim for that position. Left side of midfield the same
    - Jarvis, Gray Ward even Kites can play there!!
Get another quality centre back quick - check the books we have had more cash in than out!!!
Wheres the spending power gone - all these youngsters on the same salary so the wage bill will not be over budget! Show some ambition MM and get another quality centre back BEFORE ITS TOO LATE!! We WILL score more than last season BUT we may let more in as well so our goal difference will be no better. ACT NOW!!!!!!

A chance for Dan Jones - maybe???

  13. andy y said:

Hopefully Dan Jones will be given a chance to be the LB or LM understudy now, rather than going on loan to Plymouth as was rumoured. Now if Harte had been a CB, then I think we should have signed him.

Think he’s taken a look at the Wolves starting eleven and realised his Harte wasn’t in it.

    1 - True, good left-backs don’t grow on trees.

And Ian Harte is nothing like a good left-back

  16. Andy said:

Think that Edwards going is a BIG mistake. I know he has his fair share of injuries but would rather get 200K back on Darren Ward than sell Rob Edwards.

In terms of Harte - I think the comments on here say it all. Think he was probably after a final pay day and we weren’t prepared to do this. Besides, he should be loaded from his Leeds/Risdale financial mis-management days.

Interesting that since he left Leeds for that Spanish side, they released him, he went to his mate Keane at Sunderland - and they let him go fairly quickly and now we’ve done the same.

  17. Wordsley Wolf said:

  18. Joe Rabbitt said:

Not a loss at all, we have enough hungry youngsters who can fill the left back position.

Sorry to see a headline “Wolves seek to offload Edwards” He has been a good utility player for us, but really unlucky with injuries. His partnership at Centre back last season with Neill Collins was solid and we only ruined it by bringing BReen back in.

  19. SUPERSTARDJWOLVES said:

Thank God Harte isnt signing, we need and I repeat we need 1 more centre half and considering Edwards is leaving we should get some additional funds so there is no excuse in upping the bid for Berra!

    Interest in Stephen Wright
Karl Henry to start in midfield
Stephen Ward to start on the left

I will happily take 4th from bottom in the current climate.

    We are a JOKE.

Lets hope Morgan just has no faith in McCarthy hence his lack of financial support since his arrival.
Big Sam in by October hopefully.

E and S- I think it is an insult to Rob Edwards to use the term OFFLOAD–He has when asked served us well inspite of his injuries–My personel view is that he surely would be worth while keeping—Why offer Harte a month to Month-Whats going on are we that skint–Take a risk he has experience and give the bloke 12months–Strange outcome especially with is Irish flavour—MM like the Green surly

  22. Oslowolf said:

20 - What planet are you on?? Stearman, Vokes, Iwelumo, Jones in Freddie and George out and cash in the bank. We’ve a stronger squad now than we have been for years - good business and a great young English squad. Bring it on!!

  23. wolvesonandon said:

20- you must be having a laugh mate! We will go up and with a good manager and a good bright ambitious young team. Have a bit more faith. Big Sam would be a Big Mistake - get with the programme and get behind the team!

  27. IanTheLichfieldWolf said:

    R - Couldn’t agree more mate!

Where is the ambition here? Over £4m has been banked from the sales of Olofinjana and Eastwood. Moxey told us last week how fortunate we are to have an owner who is ploughing money in for players. In real terms, NOTHING has been spent this summer.

So given that, why have we missed out on Berra for the sake of £0.5m? Why have we not made a bid for the likes of Loovens at Cardiff? Why are we not bringing in an impact midfielder like a Brian Howard (Barnsley)or Ben Watson (Palace)?

Mick is saying he is happy with the squad now. Who else is? We need another central defender with real pace and someone who can boss the middle of the park.

Don’t get me wrong, Saturday showed we are not far away, going forward we pack more menace and I like the signings we have made. But for me, we are play-off material at present. Another two quality signings would make us Top Two contenders. Anyone-else agree?

  28. brummie rob wolves said:

    20) Go and follow the Tesco’s then… after all they have had a terrific pre-season and have lost their 2 best players.
I think Harte could’ve done a job and the only reason Edwards is going is down to injuries. He is better than Collins and Ward.
Let’s spend some of the money accrued on a centre back. If Edwards goes, that is nearly £5 million in!

  29. TomTom said:

we are ok for left sided players: Elokobi, Gray, Dan Jones, Jarvis plus Ward and Collins have played left wing or full back too. Harte would have probably seen Dan Jones leave … I think he has too much potential to let go.

Give Dan Jones a go at full back!

  30. WOLVES said:

Well after watching Stearman on sat not impressed at all

  31. Bridget & Tony said:

28 Cant see Moxey spending anything substantial on any other players now - We had hoped that we went after another centre half youngster with some pace to give balance to the defence and also build an important understanding at the back

Harte has probably got a better offer elsewhere; just hope we dont sign up Thatcher in his place

Ipswich after Campo on a free - could do a job for us - but doubt if Moxey would be prepared to pay for his services

We really could do with a centre half with some pace even if its a loan deal

  32. SUPERSTARDJWOLVES said:

Comment 27, Good shout, we have banked alot of dough this summer, and granted we have bought players in, but we need additions incase of injuries. I dont have faith in Craddock, he is a slow slow donkey who will get found out and we need another midfielder of experience when the winter months comes in and we need more strength in that area. But I reckon with Moxey keeping his hand in transfer we may possibly come up short this season. MM’s fault… maybe the fault lies with the strict transfer policy of Moxey has enforced. By the way is BERRA still available??????

  33. Pertonian Wolf said:

Would have been a useful back up but no more. Would prefer he prove himself rather than have a last payout.

Did anybody notice that Ikeme wasn’t on the team photo by the way?

  34. Wolfinblack said:

Any right-minded player would not accept that deal.
Why could Harte not be offered a 1 year deal, this was so short sighted by Wolves and a very negative move.
Any half decent Centre-back (which is what we really need), who is looking for a club would not even consider trying to win a contract at Wolves.
And where is this so-called £30m?
I know Morgan is in the Building trade but do we really have to wait 25 years for him to pay up!!!

  35. Wiseguy said:

Lol, he knows you will strugle to maintain that mid-table finish again! Also you have sold your best mid-fielder, and with so many Fizzy pop teams spending big, it looks really bad for you this season, I really think you could be relegated!

  36. Oslowolf said:

    27. Berra, Loovens, Howard, Watson???? Errrrrrr?? Are you seriously saying they would be improvements on what we have?? Probably explains why Mick is the manger and you’re sitting in the stands mate!!

Cant get my head round this one,.on one hand MM is saying he’d be thrilled if he joins as he’s a proven player at top and international level,..so why have we offered him a monthly “prove yourself” contract as though he’s from a Sunday pub team?.
IF MM really wanted him why wasnt he offered a 1 year deal with options? or is Moxey really calling the shots on who we buy?

  44. SUPERSTARDJWOLVES said:

These tesco fans fail to realise that they could not beat the might swansea, failings in the trasnfer market, lost their best player as he was not worth a 2 year deal and they have the nerve to think we are going to struggle.. Well I got news for you, Arsenal are hell bent on getting their season up and running and they will be putting out a full strength side, Ade and Van Persie will put your flimsy defence to the sword and I think you can get really good odds for 10-0 to arsenal.

  45. IanTheLichfieldWolf said:

36 - Err..yes I am actually. With exception of Berra they are proven strong performers at this level. I work in Glasgow two days a week at the moment and having spoken with Hearts fans I feel qualified to comment on Berra’s potential.

I think Harte would have been worth a one year contract with his experience and set piece expertise - I can understand a player at his stage of his career not accepting a month on month deal.

Happy baggie, I thought real Premier League teams had no problem finding sponsors. They also have no trouble finding buyers. I guess everyone knows you’re not a real Premier League team then!!!

As far as CB’s go, I would still like to see Wolves having a go at signing Tommy Elphick for the long term. For the short-term we probably have to find someone with experience. Henchoz could do a job, as mentioned by an earlier poster.

    45. I often work in Edinburgh and watched Berra twice last season - no where near the finished article - hasn’t even made the Scottish full team yet - hasn’t been tested at anywhere near the highest level and they want more than £2 million for him. Good decision - just because Morgan has money doesn’t mean we get back into Sir jack’s Golden t** trap and spending big DOES NOT GUARANTEE SUCCESS. We as Wolves fans should know that better than any other fans in the country!

  55. el wolfo said:

Maybe just maybe ThickMick will give some of our young Wolfies a chance- Players who actually want to fight and play for the shirt!! They would have done far better than the pathetic rubbish I witnessed last season. Dan Jones, Little, Mark Davies, Gleeson and Kyle Bennett are all very good young players. Will ThickMick ever field them as it will make his own trasfers look like a waste of money? I dont think so………. its a shame as some of them will prove to be great players. Stubborn and thick- great traits for a top flight manager.

    Rant over.

Decent pre season, although we need to be top two by October otherwise ThickMick needs to go!!

As for Wolves…if we don’t want to spend too much on a centre half - £500k on Antony Gerrard will do the job. Stearman will be class!

  58. Robert Perry said:

Not losing any sleep about Harte going, saw him at Walsall and was not impressed.Still very disappointed at the players we have purchased so far.Not sure whether MM is satisfied with what he has got or has he been told that no further funds are available to him?

  59. IanTheLichfieldWolf said:

54 - I agree we don’t want to go back to the old days of throwing money at players who are not up to it - but in the Sir Jack days they were generally over the hill players who were merely after a final pay day.

All I’m saying is I think we need a central defender with pace and a strong midfield player. Kaspars Gorkss, Ben Watson, Glen Loovens, Roger Johnson, Berra, Brian Howard would all have been on my radar.

With over £4m recouped and others off the wage bill why are we seemingly content with what we have got? Investing that money wisely on a couple of quality additions would be repaid 10 fold or more with promotion to the Premiership.

  60. Ulverston Baggie said:

  61. Billywiseman said:

Might Wanderer are you after a Scouting Job and who do you prefer–Collins of Edwards-Edwards surley would be a good bench player and cover for defenders-Do not agree with some about Harte seen him in La Leagae and he has experience but MM really knows better-We still need a good experience defender in the rear of the park-What happened on the Campo score according to SKY he is talking to Ipswich–CD

  62. quality counts said:

Couldn’t afford him. MM. Moxey and Morgan all want something for nothing. As last year.

Borrow another cup of sugar please?

Morgan has in reality spent little. Sold players and bought players. His business model is buy cheap or a loan deal on a contract, then get them playing time and sell the contract on.

How can the team possibly get anywhere this season with this similar approach to last year?

  63. shatpankwolves said:

    58. still very disappointed at the players purchased so far????
you my friend are an idiot!!

  64. Jacko said:

It is an unfortunate fact of football that for many players their efforts increase when trying to land a contract and decrease when they’ve got one. MM knows Harte pretty well and knows that unless injuries strike he would only be a squad player. Perhaps he needs to know that Harte still has the hunger to push for a place when he’s out of the first team, seems fair enough. As for centre backs there’s still Gerrard at Walsall, I would have thought 400k plus Darren Ward would handle it.

  65. G&B army said:

    89. To be fair, Leicester had the second best defensive record in the Championship last season - only Palace conceded less. Tbey scored the least number in the league (even less than us) - so had we bought a Leicester striker I’d have been more concerned

Albion Fans, I think we can all agree your gonna get thrashed this coming season.

No offense to the loyal ones but all these randoms calling us dingles, look at our pre season then compare it to yours. If you can’t even beat Walsall you’ve no chance in the Prem have you?

Clearly your an armchair fan because I’ve seen Stearman twice now pull out amazing performances and he’s easily the best CB we’ve had since Lescott.

Does anyone know about Dao the centre back who played last night, haven’t really heard anything about him.

    80. POPE What r u going on about! U cudn’t manage to keep a 35 yr old has been. He’d even prefer 2 drop down a league than play 4 u lot!

    R. You really are a chump, your arguments about football are inconsistent and don’t make any sense. I suggest you carry on sitting in your arm chair and make broad sweeping generalisations that you’ve overheard other people say, as you watch the scores come in on the results show.

I suggest your thought process are the shambles

Any ideas of whos in goal sat vs plymouth ?
and i think stephan wright would be a decent signing on a free and must be better than neil collins .

I am honestly not an armchair fan at all. I am just really really despondent with the way the club is heading.

Last Season i missed 4 away games and 1 home all season. I went on the pre season tour to Dublin and have also been to Scotland this year.

I would love to take some positives and would be happy (honestly) if you convince me otherwise.

    But:

Goalkeepers - Both top class not a problem
    Full Backs:

Foley- Steady but not brilliant. Adequate to get us in top 6.
D.Jones- Not given enough chances at this level so difficult to say.
M.Gray - Excellent end of last season but please do not turn him into a left winger at the age of 34.
Elokobi - Simply one of the woersdt players i have seen in a Wolves shirt. Distribution and positional play is abysmal. Effort cannot be knocked

    Centre Halves:
Craddock - Was never good enough when he was first signed(even with Lescot carrying him) he appears better now due to the rubbish he has playing alongside him but would not get in any other team looking for promotion.
D.Ward- Slow, unable to head the ball in a straight line and poor on the deck. Not good enough
N.Collins - Conference player at best. The guy is a complete liability
R.Stearman- Jury is out.Is he a centre half or a right back? If he is a centre half i fear like his counterparts he is not strong enough in the air or tackle.

    Centre Mid:
Henry- trys hard but is to slow. Takes 2 touches to many to get the ball under control consequently slowing the game down and rarely passes or carries the ball forwards.
Potter/D.Jones - Both appear lightweight do not get stuck in and i cannot see what either offer either defensively or creatively.
D.Edwards- Lokked very good last season. Hopefully he will get even better.
M.Davies- All the talent in the world. Lets hope this is his season

    Wingers
Kightly- streches defences and creates chances. Excellent.
Jarvis- pace and ability to beat a man. Needs to be work on goal scoring and final ball maybe.

    Strikers:
    E-Blake- Goal Machine brilliant.
Keogh- Runs all day but has no instinct for goal. Often bottles out of challengers/goal scoring opportunities. Not good enough.
Iwelumo- A slightly more athletic Kevin Kyle. Offers a ‘different option’ i guess in last 15mins.
Vokes- Not seen enough to comment
S.Ward- looked good up front 2 yrs ago. Please don not play him on the left.
    Elliott - who?

T.Connor - Every time he gets near the first team we just go sideways and backwards. I have seen him take training at Compton and this is how he coaches. I am puzzled.

M.MCCarthy - Excellent first season and gave everyone hope. But never capitalised on this. Instead with cash last season he took us backwards which was not acceptable. This is a big season for him but i think he struggles under pressure. He is too egotistic to admit when he is wrong, appears tactically naive and is to reliant on ‘old pals’.

I really would like to be convinced otherwise.
This pre-season we were crying out for 2 top class centre halves- where are they?
We also needed an experienced defensive midfielder to sit in front of the back 4 acting as a calming influence. Coupling him with an inform Olofinjana to be creative would’ve been brillian.Olofinjana was hit and miss last season i no, but i feel by pairing him with the right defensive midfielder and taking defensive duties away he would’ve flourished.

Obviously football would be dull without opinions. I will be at Plymouth on Saturday and hope more than anything to be proved wrong. But can we seriously compete with Blues,Derby,Sheff Utd,Reading,QPR? I for one think not.
