All four major supermarkets have cut petrol prices for the second week in a row, amid an increasingly intense fuel price war.
Asda led the onslaught yesterday, announcing that unleaded would fall by 2p to 111.9p per litre, and diesel will drop 4p to 124.9p across all its 171 forecourts today.
Tesco brought in cuts of up to 2p per litre on petrol and 4p on diesel yesterday afternoon at the store’s 430 petrol stations. At its Burnt Tree island filling forecourt today diesel cost 124.9p a litre and unleaded 111.9p.
Then Morrisons stepped in, announcing price drops on petrol by 2p a litre and diesel by 4p a litre on its 285 forecourts. Sainsbury’s also pledged to slash petrol by up to 3p and diesel by 4p today. Retail giant Asda continued on the offensive by challenging other major supermarkets to set prices nationally rather than locally, which it says will mean a better deal for drivers.
Asda trading director David Miles said: “At Asda, you pay the same low fuel prices whether you’re in Elgin or Eastbourne.
Tesco, Morrisons and Sainsbury’s said they price their fuel locally and compete on cost within each area.BP also lowered prices yesterday by up to 3p at a number of its sites and will continue to review costs throughout the week, a company spokesman said.

shows you how they ripped us off in the start then doesn’t it, RIP OFF BRITAN
Er, no, its just linked to the price of oil which is variable.
No, shows that they can cut profit to the bone if it causes people to drive to the supermarket for fuel, might as well do the weekly shop while you are there.
There’s not a great deal of profit involved in fuel sales per litre. Quite a bit of markup, yes, like any other business. But not much profit per litre.
Why is fuel cheaper in Europe.Same companies make it and deliver it garages in Germany.France and Holland.
Rip off the British they never complain!!
not much profit?. ait bp braggin bout nearly 300 billion in profit? ok
Don’t worry guys we are getting ripped off here in Australia too, but not as much as you are. we pay about $1.60 per litre which is just under a pound.
Dave, BP make their profit from around the world. Only a small percentage of their profit is made in the UK.
The press seem to forget these companies are not just operating in the UK but across the world.
Nothing to say they have to subsidise operations in the UK to please people here - they pay plenty of UK tax already (corporation taxes, salary taxes, dividend taxes etc).
As ever Martin has a lot to say but where is his evidence for the subsidy of operations in the UK. No company is going to subsidise us out of the goodness of the heart. Martin would have us believe the same spin as Gordo delivers !
Bob, I was saying they won’t subsidise us.
We are a small fraction of their market. And a small fraction of their profit too!
