Gaslight, Grand Theatre, Wolverhampton
A bumper opening night audience enjoyed the final offering of this year’s Summer Rep season: Patrick Hamilton’s Gaslight.
From the outset Marcus Webb plays Mr Manningham as a manipulative, abusive husband, who seems intent on driving his wife to the madhouse, quite convincingly with some sharp and unpredictable changes of character here and there.
Emily Outred, as his wife Bella, succeeds in portraying the victim most admirably, though, of course, the tables are eventually turned and justice is seen to be done.
Justice arrives in the form of Insp Rough, a policeman who has been pursuing a murder inquiry for some 20 years, in a characterisation of quiet determination from Steve Dineen.
Good support comes from Jasmine Darke and Julia Main as maids Elizabeth and Nancy, while Su Gilroy’s production is unfussy and tells the story very simply.
Gaslight runs until Saturday. Tickets are available from the box office by telephoning 01902 429212.
