Fire rips through Weston pier

Grand Pier, WestonThirty firefighters were today desperately tackling a huge blaze at the Grand Pier in the Somerset seaside resort of Weston-super-Mare.

Black smoke and flames are billowing into the sky and was said to be visible from Wales.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service said six engines were at the scene.

Witnesses said the fire broke out at the foot of the West Tower.

The resort is hugely popular with visitors from Staffordshire and the Black Country.

    What a sad day! I cant believe how gutted i am about this fire! Every year as a child i would visit weston and always go in the grand pier! I hope in some way in the future they can somehow restore it!

    Echo the above…it was always a place we looked forward to going to , as have countless other Midlanders..Where do I send my £5 to start the reconstruction ?????

    What a terrible thing to happen i got video footage of my kids when they were small on there
    gutted ill give a tenner easy .
