Wolves boss hails old boy Cameron

wd1875971cameron-nb-1.jpgMick McCarthy has told his young Wolves midfield pretenders that Scots veteran Colin Cameron is their perfect role model.

Cameron shone against his former club on his Dundee debut in Sunday’s friendly, displaying all the ability and energy that made him such a hit in five years under Dave Jones and Glenn Hoddle.

Now his new boss – another ex-Wolves favourite in Alex Rae – is looking for the 35-year-old to have a similar impact at Dens Park.

Wolves chief McCarthy believes he can, adding that Mark Davies and company at Molineux could do much worse than to try to emulate Cameron.

He said: “Colin Cameron made them tick – he’s terrific, he’s all action. Our young ones have a lot in front of them to do, but he’s a good role model for good midfield players to watch.

“He’s been a fabulous player and wherever he’s been, he’s made a difference. I talk to the staff here at Wolves and they thought he was a very good player.

“He might be 35, but he’s still got the legs and he’s showing the young ones how to do it.

“Our younger players have got to learn that but they have got to want to do it. Colin has been doing that for almost 20 years.

“I’m sure he’s been doing that since he first got in someone’s team because that’s the way he plays.”

McCarthy believes Cameron’s influence nullified the impact of Davies, who had been highly influential in the first two friendlies.

He said: “‘Sparky’ wasn’t as effective as he was against Hereford or Wrexham.”

“Sometimes pre-season catches up with them because they’re having to train hard and play as well.”

While Cameron’s ability and experience were key factors, Rae also brought his former team-mate to Dundee for another reason – because he is such a whinger.

He said: “I know what you get from Colin – wee ‘Cams’ has plenty of energy to go with his ability. He’s also a ‘wee’ whinger but that will get the best out of people.

“He’s always moaning at them so hopefully that will spur the kids on around him. He’s still quite dynamic so we’re looking to get the full season out of him and hope he scores a few goals as well.

“I experienced his moaning at first hand all the time at Wolves. There were three of us, myself, him and Paul Ince.

“We were all quite good at it but I think it’s a good quality to bring into the team.”

Rae revealed the affection he gets from Wolves fans is very much mutual.

He said: “I got a good reception but every time I meet Wolves fans, they always tend to be hospitable.”

Rae, Cams and Ince - quality midfield. Hopefully the likes of Davies, Edwards, Jones and Henry can emulate what they did for the club - however, I still feel we need a midfield hardman in the Rae or Ince mould who can really grab a game by the scruff of the neck when required…

he’s already looking for excuses to not pick davies. he can’t wait for dan jones & little to have a bad game & then he’ll have a say on that, but of course his favourites can play as bad as they want & he won’t mention it.

    3. how funny it is seeing the albion preseason pics while they are playing in the old kit its like when a school or summat asks a club to send them there old kit to play in, yet albion and as they’ll keep telling us they are a premier league club yet are playing in a kit that shows off t-mobile but t-mobile arent even paying them for the privilage lol
WBA will always be a smaller club than us, no sponsor, the chairman/directors want out and can only sign cast-offs and the good players they had gera, phillips have joined bigger clubs fulham and blues lol you may have the premier league status but you will always be a laughing stock…… thats a thought they can have oxo, knorr or bisto the shirt

3 - I should laugh while you can mate, because you won’t be doing much of that next season!

11 - yeah that 16 million has been wasted on champions league, premier league and full internationals aint it…. if only we had got to Stearman and Vokes before you guys…. Haaaaaaaaaaa.

12 - No, but we are in the prem !!!!

Tipton, congratulations. You have won the prize for the least intelligent, most pointless. most pathetic post of the day. Well done.

    15) They are on your site, probably with good reason, to rib you about your inept pre-season performances and asking how you have spent £16 million on total dross!

Mickey Cameron- top bloke, great footballer. Never hid in games, always wanted the ball, good passer, scored a few goals into the bargain. Some of his movement off the ball and his runs into the box were outstanding. Definitely an excellent role model and I always thought we were a better side when he was playing. Good luck at Dundee this season.
To finish off we go from the sublime (Colin Cameron) to the ridiculous (Tipton Baggie). An Albion fan who feels the need to come onto our pages and call us ’stupid’! Who said irony was dead?

  22. Wolves Mick said:

3 Tipton Baggie - and we sit in awe as you frighten the Prem by err getting walloped in your friendlies before eeking out a draw against the mighty ……………..Shrews !! Laugh Ive nearly stopped !!

18 Happy ~ how disappointing I thought you were better than that. You do realise that the only people who write Haaaaaaaaa have an IQ slightly less than their shoe size.

Aren’t you the same person who said that we would definitely lose Kightley, Ebanks Blake, Hennessey because we didn’t get promotion. What do you know?

  24. Jacko said:

21 Worcester, Mickey Cameron would do a good job here as a coach, by all accounts he was giving Davies some free coaching anyway. I bet Ince will be thinking about taking him on board.

dear boggies just a quick note to say….

Get lost, we’ve never liked you, needed you or in fact liked you - pass comments about your relegation threatened team on your own pages please & just leave us alone, sometimes it seems like you’re more interested in wolves than a lot of wolves fans

The quality of the Tescos posts is deteriorating badly and this underlines the fact that they are not exactly over-brimming with confidence about their team or their recent signings.

They need a lot more players to stay up. Sunderland were probably a better side than they and they spent tens of millions to keep up by the skin of their teeth. Tescos will have to do likewise especially as a lot of the lower teams in the premiership seem to be spending well and strengthening consistently.

Tescos keep on about being in the premiership but this will start to become pretty meaningless if all they are doing is keep up the numbers while getting hammered every week.

I hope they stay up (got £20 on them doing so) but their board really must get players in and quickly otherwise they will be going down the Mowbary way - and that’s not good for Midlands football.

  29. Happy_baggie said:

26 - so do you like us then or not - its not quite clear…. maybe if you said it one more time ??

23 - how else do i signify that I’m laughing unless i type Haaaaaaaa ?? And why is Haaaaaaaaa indicative of a low I.Q ??

Now if i have typed “out of darkness…” or “magic Merlin mick” or even “wolves will go up this season” i would have to conceed to you - but i didn’t. Haaaaaaaaaaaa.
