Stafford Arriva bus fares set to rise

Bus fares in Stafford are set to rise as Arriva Midlands faces up to soaring bills.

Passengers across South Staffordshire will see increases of between 10p and 20p on most single fares while some saver tickets have been withdrawn.

The company said today it was being forced to increase charges because of rising fuel prices and increases in insurance, employment and energy costs.

The poorest residents are likely to be hit hardest as they struggle to cope with increases in food and energy bills.

Across the region the increases vary from between 10p and 20p with some tickets removed and new fares introduced in to create, what the company say is a simplified fare structure.

The increases will take effect from Sunday when the company will axe a range of tickets including the Family Savers, Big Savers, and Day Return tickets.

Prices in the Centro area will remain unchanged and bosses have frozen the price of a child weekly local saver ticket at £8.

The maximum single fare for a child will be £1.20 with the rest increasing at different levels up to 20p.

The company claims regular bus users who opt for multi-use bus tickets, which can be transferred between family and friends, will continue to benefit.

Most day, weekly, four-weekly, quarterly, and six month and annual tickets will be increased in price.

In a statement the company said increases in single fares had been kept as low as possible to help cover rising costs, whilst some maximum single fares remain unchanged.
