Albion midfielder Robert Koren has been given fresh hope of making the start of the Premier League season by positive results from scans of his injured knee.
Tests on the right knee of the Slovenian international have confirmed Albion’s initial diagnosis of strained medial ligaments.
The damage is not as severe as first feared and manager Tony Mowbray is now hopeful that Koren will be fit to face Arsenal in the Premier League opener on August 16.
He said: “I think the news is pretty positive. It’s as we thought. It’s a medial knee ligament injury but it’s not as severe as it might have been, which is quite encouraging.
“The physios seem pretty optimistic he will be ready for the start of the season so let’s wait and see.”
James Morrison and Kim Do-Heon teamed up in the centre of midfield at Shrewsbury last night and gave Mowbray food for thought, with encouraging displays in the 2-2 draw.
The manager is still hoping to bring in more cover in the heart of midfield. He is also looking to strengthen at centre-half.
His hopes of landing West Ham’s James Collins have been extinguished after the Wales international decided to stay at Upton Park. Albion were one of several clubs to register an interest in a loan.
But Mowbray has dismissed reports linking the Baggies with a move for Dutch winger Mustapha Riga, of Levante.
The Albion players not on duty at Shrewsbury head for Cheltenham tonight with Marek Cech and Scott Carson in the squad.
Squad: Carson, Daniels, Hoefkens, Barnett, Hancox, Cech, Worrall, Greening, Labadie, Brunt, Beattie, Miller, Slusarski, Baker, Tininho, Martin, Sawyers, Knight, Manton.

Now THAT is good news about Koren. His fitness might need watching but this lad can play at any level.
It will be a huge plus if koren is fit for the Arsenal game - but i hope he doesn’t rush back too early.
With Kim, Morrison and Dorrens all looking good, Jonno and Brunt to play tonight, Koren getting fit and Tex due back around october our midfield already looks great - but TM aint taking chances and is still looking to strengthen !!!
I see the players the press link us with are still wide of the mark. The club is doing deals well under the radar - and seem to be getting real quality at the same time.
LOVIN IT !!
Great news,he’ll be influencial to the team next season.
Shrewsbury is all I can say and fair play to the shropshire side !!!! and happy Baggie is talking about the Aresnal game…. Dont make me Larrfff
Happy_baggie
has it ever been any different mate, gawd i love being a baggie, the most shrewd businessmen going hehe
we can all put our feet up and relax.
i hope to grab myself a blank shirt too when they come out.
Super Bobby Koren, I love this bloke, he’s a brilliant player……excellent news if he’s going to be fit!!
This is good news about KOREN!
with him in the squad our starting 11 is almost
complete although we could do with a centre half.
Here`s a starting line up for the Arsenal game.
CARSON/HOEFKENS/CECH/CLEMENT/ROBINSON/
MORRISON/KOREN/GREENING/KIM/MOORE/BEDNAR.
2. Happy, I hope Wenger and Ferguson don’t read this they won’t sleep. Kim, Morrison and Dorrens already AND HE’S STILL LOOKING TO STRENGTHEN!!!! It would be funny if it wasn’t so sad, good luck anyway, you might just need it.
4) Did’nt you lose to Wrexham?
Jacko - I know when you have a midfield general like karl henry any other team is going to look rubbish - but please let me have my dreams….
TimDJ - err…. wrexham….??? Fancy LOSING to a team that just about clung onto their football league place. I bet the mighty plymouth are quaking already !!!!
7.
Just like Coleman, Dowie and McCleish won’t sleep when they see that you’ve signed Iwelumo, Vokes and Jones and Mick’s still looking for a centre half!!!! This would be hilarious if it wasn’t so tragic for the biggest club in the Midlands, possibly the World.
Steady Happy…. you’re leaving yourself open !! Another great result for you last night against the mighty Cheltenham Town !! By the way, how are you my friend ? Haven’t spoken with you in a while. Trust you’re looking forward to the new season ? Wish you well.
dingles go keep signin ur £100,000 players
I bet if you asked Alex Furguson if he wanted
KIM and MORRISON for nothing then he would snap
your hands off,but can the same be said about
KIGHTLY and JARVIS.
James Morrison cost us 1.5M from Middlesbourgh
and he`s a proven PREM player, Kim Do-Heon
is a proven quality International midfeilder
with the quality to be a world class top
flight footballer.
I really dont know where these Wolves fans are
coming from,so just face it DINGLES! the ALBION
are a PREM club who can afford to pay 4M for
a goalkeeper while you are still hunting for
players who play for NON LEAGUE LEAGUE CLUBS!
Hello filton - yes i am very much looking forward to the new season - as i would think you are too.
However i am constantly amazed by your fellow wolves fans attempts to claim some sort of superiority these days… surely that is a closed book now.
My reference to wrexham was only made in response to some moron who thinks Shrewsbury are better than albion (I hope your comment about Cheltenham wasn’t a similar remark..??)
I think most real fans understand what these games are about - fitness. Thats why we fielded two different teams on successive nights - the result is irrelevent.
Anyway - keep well.
Happy….no that wasn’t me saying that Cheltenham are better than the Baggies. Like yours, it was a bit of a swipe at some of your compatriots who took the mick over the defeat at Wrexham and our win at Hereford.
Yeah, the old ‘my club is better than your club’ is getting a bit boring. I think most sensible Wolves fans accept that you are in the ascendency ….at the moment !!
On a different subject (and this isn’t a dig - just an honest question !!) you must be concerned that you do not have a sponsor yet and that valuable income has been lost on shirt sales. I know it would certainly worry me.
Oh well, back to the grindstone !! Keep those posts coming.
Filton - I’m not concerned at all about a lack of a sponsor. I’m not sure what the delay is and there are some decent names being mentioned, but i don’t think it will affect us finacially at the moment.
As long as there is no alterior motive behind the lack of a sponsor then its really neither here nor there to me.
Good luck - I look forward to conversing with you throughout the coming season.
