Jarrod’s blog: WBA summer buys

carson1.jpgOk I was wrong, I stated a number of times I did not expect Carson to sign for us. A 22 year old England International hopefully with a big career in front of him, I kept expecting someone else to come in for him at the 11th hour.

It is a measure of how the Albion are now being perceived as having a real chance of Premier League survival, only time will tell, but I have only been impressed by the quality of our summer signings so far.

Carson has received a lot of media attention but the signing that intrigues me the most is Cech. After carrying out some back ground information on him, he could prove to be a real gem.

Porto are one of the best teams in Europe and he has been a big part of their success. His team mate, Jose Bosingwa, and fellow full back (right) has moved to Chelsea for £16million.

My sources have spoken of his technical ability and his willingness to attack, an excellent passer of the ball who creates goals from defence.

It further reinforces many Baggies fans view that Mowbray intends to persist with his attacking style of football in the Premiership.

It is a marked difference from the Robson days of one up front and five in midfield, with the emphasis on stifling the opposition.

Mowbray has also indicated that there are more signings on the way. If they are of the same quality as the first three, I simply cannot wait to see us in action this season.

I have stated on a number of occasions that I believe the key to survival in the Premier League is having players who will score enough goals to ensure survival.

Miller and Bednar are unproven at this level and Luke Moore has to regain his confidence to have an effect. I expect Mowbray to sign at least one, possibly two strikers before the end of August.

He also has the loan market to utilise, so he may choose to wait a little longer before bringing in loan players, so he can assess which parts of the squad needs that extra strength, or where he has struggled to strengthen on a permanent basis.

Exciting times, so I have a little extra bounce in my stride as I head off for my first pre-season game at Shrewsbury.

Don’t beat yourself up over Carson, I felt exactly the same. Memories of this time last year, ‘thinking while it’s nice being associated with players like Brunt and Morrison, they’re never going to sign for us’ (remember Wulfies on here ridiculing us ‘they’ll never go to the Poorthorns.’ Don’t these Wallies ever tire of being wrong?)
You may be right about two strikers, one established and one youngster although Sherjil’s form makes the latter less urgent.
No doubt there will be people on here berating the club over the failure to sign a centre half yet. I’m sure that this is like the swan, serene on the surface while behind the scenes everything is going like the clappers. Better to wait and buy once than to rush in and have to buy twice.

Yes it’s satisfying to read Albion are now perceived to be a club with genuine Premiersip potential due in the main to Tony Mowbray’s philosophy on how the game should be played.
Each new signing remarks along the same lines ” I like the way the manager plays the game. It’s a style that suits me.I look forward to playing a part in making West Brom a successful Premier League side”

An additional striker IS required due to the inexperience up front we have at present, but if Luke Moore CAN reproduce the form that saw him score (i think!?) three hat-tricks for Aston Villa then he could be a revelation.

Carry on recruiting wisely Tony, and whatever happens i’me sure we won’t disgrace ourselves in the Top flight.

CERTAINLY BETTER THAN THE BAGGIES ‘SECOND’ TEAM DERBY COUNTY.

How many ex Albion players have they got on their books!!!!Moore-Albrechtsen-Ellington-
    Earnshaw.

    Apologies if I’ve forgotten anyone!

Jarrod I know how you feel. I shall head of to Shrewsbury full of anticipation tonight. I like you thought that the Carson deal was never going to happen, but i’m glad it has and hopefully the prospect of 4 years at the same club and a little stability might work wonders for him and helpo with his confidence.

I’m looking forward to seeing some football again. It has been a long summer.

The reason you say Luke Moore needs to regain confidence is because of idiots like you slating him every week.

I must have missed the bit where i was slating Luke Moore, i am actually firmly based in the camp of thinking Luke Moore could be a huge part of our season. He has all the attributes to be an excellent Premiership striker and with the fans help his confidence improved could be a bargain at £3million.
I agree that we have a minority that hold the sending off against Leicester against him and the fact he is ex Villa, but i am not one of them, and an idiot i am not.

You honestly took time to read this blog about the Albion, and chose to add your wisdom to it by writing that?!

Well done young man, you’ve beaten me, and I for one will now rip up my season tickets and instead get a season ticket at the Custard Bowl to come and sit with you.

After all, I’d rather watch 2nd tier football costing more money, and see no goals scored for my team despite having 8 ’strikers’ with lots of empty Orange seats around me!

We still look as though we will be vulnerable at the back and we need some height at the centre of the defence. Neither Carson or Keily like coming off their line to take the high ball so we will again be vulnerable to set pieces. Also, both Phillips & Gera had positional eyes for goal & made a habit of being in the right place at the right time. The younger strikers that we now have don’t appear to have that flair. I hope they prove me wrong! Where are the goals now going to come from?

  10. Danswanseabaggie said:

Totally agree although as much as I want to see us go forward I can’t agree with Mowbray’s suggestion that we do not necessarily need a holding midfielder. Would like to see us sign one and another centre-half. Can’t wait to see how the new signings look down in Swansea next week.

Pre-season friendlies are misleading in some cases, mainly due to varying levels of fitness. If you place any credence on the results I suppose Everton and Villa may as well give up now.

Oh and I suppose that a certain part of North Wales won’t be hanging out the bunting to celebrate impending promotion to the Football League just because they overcame a very average Championship team hailing from Staffordshire region. Wrexham ring any bells?

REF- 1. WOLVESWOLVES. Nice to see you yesterday slating off Tony Daley. Seemed to go down well with your fellow Wolves fans. Considering FC koln were into their 6th pre season game, 4-1 wasn’t a fantastic result true, and our defending seemed comical at times, but least we didn’t loose to Wrexham. German premier league team or a Welsh Blue square whatever leagure now team. The choice is yours.

Bomber - I was over in Düsseldorf on the weekend for one of my best mates stag do. Although I didn’t make the game on the Saturday I did bump into the Albion squad and backroom staff in Düsseldorf airport. I had a chat with Mowbray regarding various topics - the guy is just class. He was more than happy to stand with me and chat all things football and Albion. He’s very confident that more signings will be arriving - he’s hoping maybe up to 6 more. He just wants them in asap altho he does realise we as a club move slower than most in this area! As for the tour he was really happy with it - two tough games (the German teams are 3 weeks ahead in their pre season preparation compared to English teams).Dan Harris has worked them unbelievably hard and he’s confident that the likes of Cech/ Carson will catch up on their fitness in quick time. He’s very confident and optimistic regarding our chances this year but very aware it will be a tough season.

    One nice thought this summer..
I wont have to visit the custard bowl for many years to come… lets face it..with MM at the helm of WWTitanic your lot will NEVER gain prem status and with TM we stand a damn good chance of retaining ours.

As opposed to retaliating to ridiculous Wolves posters, I’m now going to focus upon replying to this blog.

We have bought in quality players this Summer. Zuiverloon, Cech and Carson all look to be quality with bags of potential also. I think it’s clear that instead of purchasing players with experience of the premier league, but are on their last legs paying over the odds, we’re going for players with a desire to prove themselves.

However, some know how is still required to lead these younger talented players I think and an experienced Centre Back and Striker are the main priorities now. If we’re still looking at bringing 6 more players, this should include 2 x Centre Backs, 1 x Holding Midfielder, 1 x Right Winger and 2 x Strikers in my opinion.

Cech is an unknown and could be a gem but the physical nature of the premiership can often undo players from the portugese league with the obvious acception of ronaldo. carson started brightly but liverpool never played him he done well at charlton but got relegated and started brightly at villa but he’s a shop stopper and not a box commander as villa fans will tell you and will not play for england again in a while! At the moment the only players from your crop of last seasons squad which i feel maybe able to make the step up is possibly koren and bednar, the others (with the acception of the new signings) are not good enough. I think the 3 that come up will be the three that come down, I think hull will make a fight of it but it will be over for the 3 promoted clubs by the end of April. Either way all the best and I hope the wolves will meet you in the cup during our role reversals in a years time.

I worry that Carson is a bit of damaged goods having seen some stats on how his performances dropped off after the England catastrophe. We’re going to be under the cosh plenty this season so hope I’m proved wrong - the realistic side of me says that he’s going to be the busiest player this season.

In terms of strikers, I think its very interesting the comments from Steve Coppell this morning. He plans to increase the price of his players closer to the window as he has less time to replace them and would expect to pay more to get his squad up to speed. We could end up being forced to pay well over the odds as we get closer to the start of the season. With this in mind, I think TM will use the loan system to full effect for strikers - at least he seems to have the respect of prem managers and they know their players will be coming to a footballing side rather than kick and rush merchants. So long as it isn’t Carlton Cole!

    1) im a wolves fan yet you give some of the other decent wolves fans a bad name, you my friend are a tool!!!
i dont judge anything on preseason, they are what they are, fitness exercises to get the players fit and also a good way of new players bonding with their new team mates.
yea i can hate mowbray for him being your boss and everything WBA lol but got to admire his insistance that you play attacking football!
and hate to say it but other than when we played in the prem ourselves, no one gave us a footballing lesson like you did last season at the molineux, yea we can say we have a bigger ground, richer chairman but on the pitch where it matters, sorry my wolves friends we are miles away, and i defy any disillusioned wolves fan who doesnt agree.
but on the same note, im sure you lot know how hard it is going to be next season, for what its worth stoke and hull are poor, but for you to stay up there needs to be another poor side?? me ill go with boro!
i think your biggest problem will be in defence (as an outsider looking in) and cant honestly see carson adding anything to help them out! going forward i think you’ll do ok but feel luke moore was a poor judgement but every manager makes em, think the 3m youpaid for him could of gone elsewhere on someone better!

Re the Derby player i named. As someone who has just returned from hoiday, and being honest not much interested in paying good money to see ‘friendly/practice’ matches, i obviously hadn’t realised that Darren Moore and Rob Earnshaw had been transferred to Barnsley and Nottingham Forest.

Incidently i don’t profess to know everything about Albion. Who does incidently?

I simply pass on a personal opinion and whether fellow fans agree or disagree with the
opinion stated is up to them.

Obviously you don’t, but then that’s entirely your choice.

    22 and 26,

Spoken like true football fans.I think in this day and age when clubs like the albion and the wolves are up against it I think us fans are all in the same boat. I have had a hate for the wolves all my life but the wolves fans are as die hard as any and I respect them for that and would love to see them in the prem with us. to be honest it will always
rankle me that we sold you guys Bully!

Let be honest. We have certainly had the bragging rights over the last few years so If i were a wolves fan I would be pretty quiet right now.The fact is we have bigger fish to fry as, franky(and this is not being nasty) wolves havent been close to us recently so even though the rivalry will always be there, our struggle is staying in the prem or getting there, playing the wolves will always be the highlight of a season for me and I will miss it but it doesnt mean what it used to.

While we have Mowbray at the helm I think we will always be ahead of you…if he goes or if you get a better manager(I thought mm would do it for you and im puzzled why he hasnt) we could be on more equal footing and that vicious rivalry will return. Good luck for next season and get back in the prem with us,

  36. Happy_baggie said:

During last season i said that there wasn’t another CCC player that i would put into our starting 11 at that time…. and of course I was shot down by our orange neighbours with cries of Kightly and Hennesey ect… but I’m really pleased to see that we haven’t dropped down the leagues yet when buying new players.

All of our purchases are either from abroad or the prem - and i think that will continue.

We have gone down the route of buying “star” CCC players before when we have gone up (Earnshaw and Ellington were both top scorers in the CCC) but it rarely works out - thats why TM has been buying for the prem for two years.

I’m struggling to think of any CCC player from last season who would get into our starting 11 or even the match day squad now.

I hope we get those arsenal lads in on loan for the defence, and maybe get another ToMo gem up front…. and then i think its job done.

I’m feeling really positive about the season - bring it on !!!!

Am I missing something…? You have spent over £16 million and probably the 2 overseas defenders were worth signing. The reason that no one came in for Carson - apart from Stoke - is that he is a liability. Think Croatia v England and after that a few clangers for Villa.
You are right friendlies mean nothing but players like Moore - who is totally lacking confidence - desperately needs goals!
