Boss McCarthy’s blast at Blatter

wd2908810wrexham-v-wolves.jpgWolves boss Mick McCarthy has hit out at FIFA chief Sepp Blatter’s ‘slaves’ comments and demanded all players be given one year contracts.

The chief of the game’s governing body enraged the football world when he declaredplayers were treated ‘like slaves,’ in response to Cristiano Ronaldo being forced to honour his five-year deal at Manchester United instead of joining Real Madrid.

Now McCarthy has come up with his own plan to get players to stick to their contracts.

He fumed: “Don’t get me on about Sepp Blatter. When I was Irish manager, I told him FIFA stood for ‘Forget Irish Football’ – I can’t believe some of the stuff he comes out with.

“Let’s all have just one year contracts. That will be interesting. The players want a bit of security when they sign, such as five-year contracts that are going to earn them £10m-£15m.

“If they then want to break that after 12 months, then give them one-year deals.

“There would have to be one or two who would have to pull their finger out. There will no doubt be one or two yelling about it now I’ve said it.”

Moving back to Wolves, McCarthy has also revealed how well new signing Chris Iwelumo has fitted in since his £400,000 move from Charlton.

He said: “He’s a proper bloke. From the minute he walked into the place, he knows what it’s about.

“He quite clearly looks after himself when you look at him physically and he’s fitted in perfectly.

“He’s got a good record at this level – 45 goals in the last three seasons. Not all the big target men get that many goals, so he’s done well.”

Shrewsbury boss Paul Simpson has also dismissed reports that Wolves and Coventry are competing for his defender Kelvin Langmead.

Wolves were linked with a £75,000 bid for the converted striker at the weekend.

He said: “People may think because I’ve signed a couple of defenders that I want Kelvin to leave but nothing could be further from the truth.

“I want him to stay. I’ve not had any contact from Wolves or Coventry. As long as Kelvin’s happy to stay, then I’m happy for him to be here.”

    Well said Mick.

It must be disheartening for any manager that has shown faith in a player that then walks early on his agreed contract for bigger bucks.

The FA must act or else its going to be near impossible for any manager to build a successful team.

MM, puts it in his own strange way. But what he says in this instance is true. Players do want the long contract to give them security, yet it only means anything to them, when they’re not doing well.

3-Not that longer contract and despite that it meant something to him when he distanced himself from the Ireland job and turned down South Korea. Don’t think he is begrudging players long contracts if they honour them, as they expect clubs too.

Totally agree Mick. Sepp is a complete idiot.

  9. Mick said:

Seems like a perfectly sensible interview to me.
MM is quite right. Players shouldn’t sign long contracts for the security and expect to pull out when it suits them. Blatter is a complete idiot.
So, (2), why the abuse - and what is the ‘whopper’ ?

For once Mad Mick actually has a valid point. Even in this instance though he has a very bizzare way of saying it.

Watch the moaners and groaners having a go at MM for comments about Blatter … this man is a disgrace to football and is anti-England. Other countries have had the World Cup twice. We invented the game and have the crowds and stadia!
Anyway back to Wolves… an experienced centre half and possibly a central midfielder and we have a good squad.

7- how you know berra has got a medical?

    Blatter should get the boot

I agree with Mick, Sepp Blatter is an idjut!

Both club & player agree contractual terms that at the time of signing work for both parties. The contract will specifically describe the terms for breach of contract from either party. If for example Ronaldo had agreed to pay back ALL his wages if he breaches his contract…and Real Madrid want to pay this on his behalf then whats the problem. But if the contract stated under no circumstances will Man U release his registration without their consent…then if that’s what was agreed then that’s what was agreed…Tough, but its hardly slavery!

Mick…you Moxey & Morgan are in full control of Wolves players contracts….so if you want to give 1 year contracts to new players no-one stopping you! Bad move though.

The last thing Wolves should do because of their ‘young & hungry’ policy is shorten contract lengths. Surely after developing a young player into a Premiership quality player Wolves should either get a few years service out of them or at least a substantial transfer fee. With a one year contract a player will obviously want more money in leu of contract length…and at the end of the season we’d be forced to give them away all our best players to Premiership clubs cause they are out of contract.

    Simon :)

Getting back to the point and leaving the Latin to the Latts(I know I know) MM is half right. There are loads of players who need long contracts because the may never get another club but who do we think pushed for Ronaldo’s 5 year contract and how eager must Chelsea be to sign Lampard on a similar one? !year contracts = free transfers.

so FIFA stands for Forget Irish Football… ??

What about the “A” - or is four letters / words a bit trickey for MM.

I agree with his comments about Blatter - but even when he’s right, he still sounds like a moron.

I’m off to Dublin next week to celebrate my 50th bday - Will wear my new Wolves shirt with pride as always - However, am I likely to get lynched because of the connection with Mad Mick lol? He did leave the Irish team on a good note didn’t he???

  27. Canada Wolf said:

At last! Mick makes sense. Blatter is a fool and he always has been. I find his comments distasteful to say the least. If one signs a contract one should have to stick to it come what may, otherwise it’s not a sodding contract, is it? This ain’t rocket science folks, it’s a simple matter of morals, what’s right and what’s wrong. Come on you Wolves!!

Shall we go onto your pages and comment about how the Cabbage Patch Doll has spent over £16 million on hardly anybody of note?

  31. WetWolf said:

Mick is right with this one.
Either contracts mean something or they don’t. If a player signs for five years he shouldn’t expect to walk out after just one year. I bet the players all expect the club to honour the contract if they get injured and can’t play.

Wouldn’t forget irish football be F.I.F and not F.I.F.A? Silly man. He has the wit of a rabbit dropping

I always worry when managers have to comment on general matters-like when Bryan Robson was chiming on about England when he should have been worried about relegation. Mick, forget Blatter, forget FIFA, just get on with managing the Wolves.

  36. DudzieWolf said:

Blatter should be grueling the agents who as soon as a side get relegated then they stick there ore in to get players up a league. Henri Kamara rings a bell. It’s not always the player but I do agree with Mick to an extent, however Blatter has done some good as well as some bad. You cant win em all but I do know he gets on Micks t!1s

  37. Shropshirebaggie said:

Classic - FIFA Forget Irish Footall.

However, I have to agree, Sepp Blatter is a complete plonker. His best one was when he suggested extra time and penalties after league matches. What next Sepp, square footballs?!!

  38. Hoofer said:

And you make him look sane HB!!!

  39. JWolf said:

Finally Mick McCarthy talks some sense - even if he was only joking! Great idea! Contracts for one season only (for managers as well as players) to be renewed or transferred before the new season starts. No transfers during the season - only loans. Let’s see how that works.

  40. JIWAL said:

Mcduff…one year contracts eh? But didn’t you just give that donkey Collins 4 ? Typical of the clown, says one thing, does another.McCarthy out !!

  41. E11 Wolf said:

Most of soccers leadership in europe and here is pathetic. Our own FA quickly collapses under any duress and their ability to appoint England managers is laughable. Blatter is a clown who for some reason keeps the support of his peers - who by definition are probably even more rediculous.

HappieBaggie….FIFA means Forget Irish Football ALWAYS. In this Blatter is correct. I forget Irish football regularly er what are we talking about?

  42. Prawn Sandwich said:

39 jwolf. How would that work? More money leaving clubs via players pockets. Richer agents. No investment in youth teams or stadia. Thats how it wouldn’t work.

  43. Realist Wulfrunian said:

How about Mick you concentrate on your own job, you waste of space, worst manager we’ve had at milieux since Graham Hawkins, get rid now and bring in Ian Holloway

  44. quality counts said:

MM needs to think more about the sorry state Wolves are in rather than knock someone with way more experience in management. Why does E&S bother with such drivel? surely something better to write about?

  45. JWolf said:

42 Prawn Sandwich. It would work for McCarthy because he’d rather bring an ex-Ireland or Sunderland player in than give the rest of the squad a chance. For example if Hennessey and Murray were both injured he’d get another experienced keeper in on loan before he’d play Ikeme. He keeps talking about players fighting for their place but how can you fight the manager? So Wolves would actually save money on contracts and youth investment and they could ditch the surplus players they can’t get rid of now.

  46. WOLFIEPAUL said:

Marlon Harewood seen talking, shaking hands and smiling with MM 2 hours ago outside Billy Wright Statue

Has anybody heard of sarcasm? I think you will find the 1 year contract was a joke.
