Wendy Lloyd took to the streets of Wolverhampton to get the public’s view on changes to the benefits system.

Unemployed people will be forced to work for their state benefits or facing losing them, under plans outlined by the government.

Incapacity benefit and income support would be scrapped and benefits for people who are out of work would be cut to two - jobseeker’s allowance and employment support allowance.

Jobseeker’s allowance will be retained for people fit for work, and employment support will go to those who are out of work because of a physical or medical condition.

The get-tough message from Work and Pensions Secretary James Purnell to MPs and the public was that there will no longer be a “right to a life on benefits”.

    Superb move.
Lets hope that it is controlled strictly. There are real sick people out there.
I have Breast Cancer,i cant go to work at moment due to my treatment and four surgeries, but i cant get anything, because my husband is in the 40% tax pay workers and we have to much savings. So we have worked hard both of us since 16/17 years old, both being ex military and now in civillian street,
But you can go to the doctors be signed off with a bad back,3 months later be on incapacity benefit and yet the claimant be riding a motorbike, playing football and running a marathon..lol its a joke no one is checked up on.No one has a surprise visit.
Were to much of a soft touch.
If in todays society women get pregnant and end up single unmarried mothers..tough…the contraception is free, there is no excuse for any one to be in this position today. But we dont owe them anything, child care is out there, family to rely… on thats what growing up is all about.Survival and providing for your family.
Time we installed this in to everyone in this country. No more free hand outs,no more taking bills to the social because they cant pay..no more loans of the social for washing machines etc..use your hands!!
I did and it never did me any harm!

I think that it’s a good idea (because it would utilize those who lounge on the dole), but only if concessions are made based upon one’s age and physical suitability. For example, if there is a 55 year old woman who has been made redundant and is on JSA due to it, and is actively looking for work; I feel it is a shame to expect them to do the same manual labour as a young and healthy 21 year old male.

Regarding the woman 27 seconds from the end; I fail to see the logic in her statement. Many immigrants (e.g. the Polish) work multiple-fold times harder than the average working-class chav; while being paid less than minimum wage. Which one of those two are on the dole? The chav. The income tax of many ethnic minorities go towards work and pensions who fund who for free? - The chav. So do not make hypocritical blanket statements on issues you clearly know nothing about, as you only expose your own ignorance and feed the negative stereotypes against your type.

Did James Purnell not get £20,000 of our money to redecorate his country home? Now he wants to use disabled people as forced labour.

Yes, make those who cheat the system work, but don’t penalise genuine cases when MPs are the biggest scroungers of all.

to right people should be made to work and it is about time the government sorted the cheats out from the genuine people. My only worry is that they will target the most vunerable first such as people with mild learning difficulties because they will be easy to target, and another thing is where are all these jobs coming from if they do succeed to catch these cheats out.

Whilst i agree that people on benefits should work for their money, i dont agree with the ‘community service’ type of work they will be required to do, isnt this what criminals do?? it shouldnt be on the same level, they should do voluntry work at government buildings etc, that way they get experience aswell, leave the litter picking etc to the criminals!!

its about time that something was done .bout time these benefit scroungers were sorted out from the genuine ones ,where is peoples pride these days of wanting to go out and earn money to support yourselves and your families ,the way these scroungers are its certainly not fair on the genuine ones with illnesses and disabilities .

In reply to “breeze” i would like to say that the comment that there are no checks made on PEOPLE ON INCAPACITY BENEFIT is complete rubbish.

people are given review times and then have to fill in a very long form and are usually then sent for a medical conducted by a DWP doctor.

A decision is made by a DWP decision maker, based on the doctors report and the questionaire, as to benefit continuing.

Many.not all, people are reviewed every year and the time involved can be months, they are therefor in a permenent state of worry about the outcome. This info.is available in many places, if people choose to look, many can’t be bothered!!And no i am not on any kind of benefit myself and never have been in the last 38 years of working.

At last, get the spongers and dossers in employment, why should i work all my life to benefit this SCUM.
WHY should they get a decent pension because they are to idle to get off their lazy backsides.
And if they refuse to work make them do National Service.
