Memorial to soldier unveiled

A memorial to mark the life of a Wolves-mad soldier who was killed in Afghanistan was unveiled in a moving ceremony in the Black Country today.

Sean Dolan’s family described it as “a proud and wonderful day” as a permanent tribute was unveiled at the British Legion gardens in Windsor Road, Oldbury.

Cpt Dolan was an avid Wolves fan described as the “finest soldier of his generation” by the MoD.

Since his death at just 40, his fellow supporters have organised several charity football matches in his honour.

His mother Daphne Dolan, of Oldbury Road, Rowley Regis, said today: “It’s a very happy occasion and we’re thrilled the British Legion has done this for Sean.

“It’s just wonderful that he has been thought so much of. Sean wouldn’t have bothered about anything like this but we are proud of all of his achievements.

“He died as he would have liked to - he put his men before he put himself.”

Oldbury’s British Legion unveiled four plaques commemorating the lives of the area’s fallen military personnel. Around 150 people turned out to watch as veterans and standard bearers marked the occasion.

Capt Dolan, formerly of Rowley Regis, was serving in Afghanistan last June when he was killed by a mortar in Helmand Province.

Since his death, his widow Mitch and son Ashley have raised thousands to help wounded UK personnel.

Veterans led the procession today to the sound of bagpipes as Capt Dolan’s family followed.

Cannon John Barnett lead the memorial prayers. He said: “We remember those who have gone before us and they are held in affection and respectful remembrance.

“We also remember all those who have served or are serving in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces and give thanks for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the establishment and maintenance of peace.”

The moving tribute was followed by a two-minute silence. Capt Dolan was a member of the 1st Battalion The Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters.
