Thieves return to church

Thieves have returned to strip more copper from the roof of an historic Black Country church in a fresh vandal attack.

The roof of All Saints in Walsall Road, Darlaston, has been all but cleared of metal as raiders try to cash in on soaring metal prices. The Express & Star reported this week how the church, dating back to the 1800s, had been the target of thieves.

But now more copper has been stolen from the top of the building which was rebuilt in the 1950s after a bomb attack during the war.

After the first theft church warden Doris Silvester said she did not know how the 30 regulars at the church would find the cash to pay for a replacement.

She said a contractor who came to check over the premises discovered the latest theft four days ago.

“It has been a most difficult week because we have not got a vicar at the moment,” she said.

Thousands of fantastic holidays to choose from!
