Mick hopes to sign one more

Mick McCarthyMick McCarthy hopes to finish his summer spending with one more signing - almost certainly an experienced central defender - to complete his squad of Premier League hopefuls at Wolves.

The Wolves manager has narrowed his search down to one capture, which also rules out a like-for-like move to replace transfer-listed midfielder Seyi Olofinjana. McCarthy has identified an as yet un-named stopper to bolster his defensive options to replace departed captain Gary Breen before the transfer window shuts on August 31.

“I’m still hopeful of getting another one,” said the Wolves boss.

“I don’t know who we’re going to get yet. It might be someone we haven’t talked about yet. But there are no other bids in.”

Wolves are not understood to be close to any breakthroughs after giving up on long-term defensive targets Christophe Berra and Jason Shackell.

And it is thought no more bids have gone in for players since the second Berra and Aaron Mclean bids were unsuccessfully lodged several weeks ago.

The unidentified arrival would bring the number of summer signings up to five following the captures of Sam Vokes, Richard Stearman, David Jones and Chris Iwelumo.

The signing of a centre-half would give McCarthy five central defenders with Stearman, Neill Collins, Jody Craddock and Darren Ward.

Ward would then be most likely to fall down the pecking order as he is on the transfer list with Olofinjana, Jay Bothroyd, Rob Edwards, Darren Potter, Stephen Elliott and Denes Rosa.

Watched by McCarthy and chief executive Jez Moxey, Elliott and Elliott Bennett scored two goals each at last night’s 4-1 win at Chasetown.

And the 90-minute appearances of Bothroyd and the highly impressive Elliott suggest their departures aren’t imminent.

Edwards limped off after 29 minutes after a no-nonsense block tackle.

But he joined McCarthy and the rest of the 24-man squad at Birmingham airport for the one-hour flight to Scotland for the start of their three-match tour which begins at Alex Rae’s Dundee tomorrow.

Why do Albion fans insist on posting to Wolves stories. Your Idiots and you will never be as big a club as the Wolves. You should also take caution and see how you start the Season before talk of Europe! And so called wolves fans, why do we need another midfielder or striker the squad is good enough with the addition of a quick CH.

SEEMS TO ME THAT THE EMHASIS NOW SHOULD BE OFFLOADING THE DEADWOOD. WE’VE GOT THE BIGGEST SQUAD IN THE DIVISION BY FAR..OBVIOUSLY NOBODY WANTS TO BUY THEM..SO GIVE ‘EM AWAY FREE THE SAVING ON THE WAGE BILL WOULD BE HELPFUL. STEARMAN, JONES, AND VOKES ARE GOOD ADDITIONS..IM AN EMU, AIN’T SURE BOUT THAT ONE..BUT TIME WILL TELL. GOOD LUCK TO THE BOY THO’ I HOPE HE DOES WELL (AND HE CAN SCORE TOO).

  21. AlexWolf said:

The one remaining signing must be a bloody good one!!!

I hope its someone like Sonko or Shittu. Both strong centre backs proven in the Championship, and could go on to perform in the Prem.

Im a little concerned with our signings overall to be honest. Sure Stearman and Vokes are good ones for the future, but they’re not gonna set the world alight next season.

In terms of the other two - are we actually improving the squad???

David Jones replacing Oli? I don’t think Jones can fill the void left by the big man. And Iwelumo replacing Eastwood? We’ve sold a talanted international striker and replaced him with a journey man. Alarm bells are ringing. Our team didn’t reach the playoffs last season and we have hardly improved it, if anything we’ve taken a backwards step.

I really hope this isn’t the end of our spending. We need a CB, DM and ST. All with experience of getting out of this league. Pull ya finger out Mick and Moxey!

  22. Steve Bull Stand said:

We have plenty of midfielders and strikers so I reckon one more central defender is needed.
Stearman and Craddock will hopefully do well but I don’t think we have good cover in that position.
Don’t know why we would want Ian Harte, don’t think he gives us anything Michael Gray doesn’t.

When did you stop supporting the Mighty Wolves, it seems that you just want to have a moan. In my personal opinion i think MM as done a great job this summer with the signings, agreed we should go the extra mile sometimes and pay the extra, but only for proven players and not the ones in the lower leagues.

Lets get behind the team and not on the managements case let these new signings prove MM was right again.

As a Midlands teams supporter I wish everyone the best of luck and that Wolves would meet West Brom in the the Prem de la Prem, although it would be nice to see all the Local teams in there. I only really come on here so I can update my fifa game lol. That iwan thingy fellow has not got a high fifa game rating so lets hope he is better than he is on there.

For my line up (mind the spellings) I have either Murry or Hennessey in Goal, Foley, Stearman, Elokobi and Danial Jones in defence.
Michael Kightly, Mark Davies, Dave Jones, Matthew Jarvis in Mid field. Ebanks and Vokes or Keogh as strikers.

As subs Dave Edwards, Vokes or Keogh, J Cradock, Iwan whats is name, S Ward, D Ward and one of the goalies

  28. RobHalesowenWolf said:

    We need 2 centre backs.

A midfield general - PaulInce type.

Dont know why weve bought this waster from Charlton - Eastwood should never have been sold.

I dont know what MM is doing, Feels like he knows he aint got any chance of keeping us in the prem, so he’s doing enough so were in or around the play offs.
MM should have had the sack in the summer - he’ll get the boot at Xmas and it will be another season wasted.

STOP SAYING WERE A BIGGER CLUB THAN THE B*GG*ES - ITS AS SIMPLE AS THIS…..THEYRE IN THE PREM - WE AINT!

THEY ARE SHOWING AMBITION BY BUYING GOOD PLAYERS LIKE CARSON ETC - WERE BUYING JOURNEYMEN WHO ARENT GOOD ENOUGH!

Well said SBA! Just get rid of all that deadwood, they should not have been here in the first place. However, rather than recriminations over rubbish buys, let’s just give them away and save the wage bill.

I am terrified that Mad Mick really wants to play the same failures from last season, and the whole transfer listing was just a Pie-boy ruse to keep us of his back over the summer. Then start of season, Mad Mick starts fielding the same teams as last season!

What has happened to my beloved Wolves?

The Mighty Mouth says that he wants one more player and that’s it! We are at least 3 players away from being a reasonable Championship team.

I reckon that by November this serial failure will have been exposed, yet again, as just a big Yorkshire Pudding (joke, but oh, how that joke hurts!).

Where do we go after that?

Morgan is not an inspirational leader, he is just another conspirator with the Pie-man!

    thing what worries me is

“And the 90-minute appearances of Bothroyd and the highly impressive Elliott suggest their departures aren’t imminent.”

now im not being funny or disrecpectful but chasetown hardly world beaters. every one moans when we linked with strikers now but who is realistically in the plans?

    iwelumo, seb, keogh and vokes?

whats happens if seb breaks his leg on sept 1 after window closes?

vokes and iwelumo are good signings but more secondary strikers! keogh wont score many so seb gets injured long term we in troulbe

Agree with you apart from Olofinjana, i think he can be easily replaced. Very disappointed with him last season and i don’t think hes been consistent enough since we signed him to be honest. You must remember we improved greatly when Ebanks Blake signed and i think we’ll finish in the top 6 provided Kightly, Jarvis and Ebanks Blake stay fit. We are apparently in for Bobo Balde who would be a good signing for the fizzy pop league.

With the ‘Pulling Power’and ready cash that Wolves have I would have thought that the manager would have put a better shift in and purchased some real talent, he’s been here long enough now to realize the paying supporters at this great club demand better.

In midfield we have Davies, Kightly, Edwards, Davies, Jones, Henry, Jarvis, Gray, D Jones, Gobern and other players like Foley who can do a job. Why on earth do we need another midfileder??

One more signing? But we need at least four more DECENT players to have any hope.Where is your ambition Mr Morgan? Looks like we have another tight wad like Hayward in charge.I despair.

  45. Robert Perry said:

Dont want to be the voice of doom but MM’s comments leave me very disappointed.I still think we are 3 players short of having even a chance of the play offs.Assuming we do sell Oli for 3 million according to my calculations we have made a substantial profit on transfers this season, hardly the actions of a club who is SERIOUS about premiership football.

  46. Baggy 1 said:

One more !…is MM joking we need a whole new squad, heard Everton are interested in Kightly, get rid- overrated primadonna, bring in players that care not moaners.
So far we have lost to mighty Wrexham, allowed to win at Hereford by Graham Turner and struggled to beat a desprate Dundee side. its going to be a long hard season of struggling o stay up - i think that most genune fans agree with me, in truth we are at best a mid table championship team nowadays , cant see us reaching the premier league again in my lifetime.

  49. WetWolf said:

    Re 21,
We have improved the squad: MM will play Iwelumo, Eastwood may have been an international but Mick was never going to pick him! We do at least effectively have an extra striker now! While I agree that Iwelumo is a journeyman, he is effective at what he does. I can also see how bringing him into a game from the bench will have much more impact than bringing on Eastwood. I believe Eastwood has quality but he was never going to fit into the setup here. We just have to get over it and hope he doesn’t come back to haunt us!

  50. Stoke Wolves said:

Whatever happened to the young, hungry policy? We already have a decent if unspectacular experienced central defender in Jody.

  51. YorkshireWolves said:

44 How dare you call Jack Hayward a tight wad, you should be ashamed of yourself, in case it had escped your notice, Jack Hayward saved this club from oblivion and threw millions and millions of pounds season after season trying to get us up when few people in this division were spending anything like us, the fact that he was let down by player after player coming here for a pay day is not his fault, do you remember the dark days of the Bhatti brothers or have you chosen to forget?
The fact that we’re not wasting money in the same way is not such a bad thing IMO or would you prefer to be in Leeds’ position?
Let’s give the guy a chance and get behind the team - you never know it just might work !!

  52. quality counts said:

Unfortunately the pre season has shaped up as a duplicate to the last one. We do need one more person desperately. A new manager!

  53. brummie rob wolves said:

    24) Getting thrashed in a pre-season friendly. You have spent over £16 million and probably the only decent signing is the Dutch lad… a long hard season is beckoning for you!

  54. Cantello Champions said:

Wow 48 Realist Wulfrunian, you’re doing our job for us. Face it, you don’t need any Albion wind-up-merchants on here, when you’ve got fans like that!

I’m guessing next season in the championship will be even madder than the last and any team will beat any team again. Good luck Wolfies!

  55. Bridget & Tony said:

Comment 51 Sir Jack did NOT save this club from oblivion - he came in when the club started to stabilise and its well documented that he was approached prior to when he took the reigns and declined the first time

Yes Sir Jack did pump alot of money into the club - but he didnt save it from bankruptcy - the previous people to Sir Jack did that

Yes Sir Jack does deserve respect for funding Wolves but he also did some rash things whilst in charge - like not fully backing DJ when we got promoted and not letting go to allow someone else to take the reigns

Tax reasons or not - Sir Jack certainly put his money where his mouth is and kept his word by letting the club go for £10

Lets just hope there were no “caviates” in the agreement with Steve Morgan that hinders the club to redevelope and move forward
The serious lack of decent football last season and the grounds lack of upkeep tends to say something - but we shall see!

  56. quality counts said:

#55, geez, I actually agree. Sir Jack did apologize for not funding the team when it reached the premiership.

As regards Morgan? opportunist who will never provide the cash for the team to get up a level.

  57. Wolves till I die said:

Has anybody kept a tally of what has been spent, and what has been taken in transfer fees?

I am getting the impression that the Pie-man has made a profit, or will when he can offload the rest of last seasons journeymen.
