Elliott and Bennett catch the eye in stroll

Stephen Elliott and Elliott Bennett were the stars of the show as Wolves eased to victory against non-League Chasetown.

Transfer-listed Elliott did his chances of a move no harm in front of a posse of scouts with a brace in a classy display, while pacy winger Bennett also grabbed two goals in an entertaining friendly at the Scholars’ Ground.

Wolves, featuring Elliott, Rob Edwards, Jay Bothroyd and Stephen Gleeson, never looked back after taking a two-goal lead inside the first 13 minutes.

Watched by boss Mick McCarthy and chief executive Jez Moxey, the visitors were gifted the opener when goalkeeper Lee Evans dropped Liam Hughes’s deep cross to allow Bennett to net with a neat shot on the turn which went in off the inside of the post on four minutes.

Wolves made it 2-0 when Elliott had time to draw Evans and coolly slot home after Bennett beat the offside trap.

Chasetown pulled one back eight minutes later when former Walsall striker Gary Birch calmly drilled home from 12 yards after a swirling cross from Richard Batchelor was headed back by Mark Branch.

The plucky Scholars might have levelled but for Danny Smith missing his kick from close range soon after.

Smith was then denied when keeper Richard Woolley bravely dived at his feet after he held off Lee Collins.

But Wolves made the hosts pay when they increased their lead to 3-1 on 34 when Elliott turned his marker and curled a beautiful shot into the top corner of the net after Bothroyd’s shot hit the bar. As Chasetown’s players began to show the effects of playing twice in as many days, the visitors had the better of the second half. Hughes glanced wide and Bothroyd went close with a shot and a header before Bennett made it 4-1 from Elliott’s through ball nine minutes from time.

Elliott was also just inches away from a hat-trick with a 30-yard chip in injury-time.

WELL AFTER THE WREXHAM DEBACLE..LOOKS LIKE THERE’S MORE SERIOUSNESS IN OUR PLAY NOW.

KEEP IT UP..AND LET’S CARRY IT INTO THE LEAGUE GAMES. STILL NOT CONVINCED WE’RE ANY BETTER OFF THAN LAST SEASON..BUT WE WASTED SO MANY GAMES LAST SEASON WITH POOR DISPLAYS..IF WE CAN CUT THAT OUT WE COULD DO OK.

why not give the “first teamers” or youth a run out? why give transfer listed players a run?

The “first teamers” have played two games including one on Wednesday and are after to Scotland today to continue their pre-season. And the youth team made up most of last nights squad.

Good to see a fairly youthfull team having a run out.

SBBA - Twice in the same week I’ve agreed with our comments!!

Roll the first game so we can get started. Tougher test in Scotland next week tho.
