To mark its anniversary, Dudley and District Building Society invited more than 1,500 members and staff to a celebration at the Black Country Living Museum last night.

They were given the opportunity to take a look around the popular tourist attraction before enjoying a traditional fish and chip supper. Founded in 1858 by members of the Tanfield family, Dudley and District Building Society has gone from strength to strength over the years today employing nearly 70 staff with assets of around £300m.

It prides itself on being a welcoming and friendly place to work and some of the longest-serving staff admit they really do feel like part of the family.

One of the longest serving staff members is Keith Robinson who joined the society straight from Dudley Technical College on October 2, 1972. Over the years he has held a number of jobs including working on the front counter and payroll department and today he is the administration general manager and secretary taking minutes at all key meetings.

Launched on June 29, 1858, the first premises were opposite the Wesley Chapel in Wolverhampton Street.

In its first year of operating the society welcomed 64 new members receiving £574 in deposits of which £330 was loaned out as mortgages

The society’s branches outside Dudley began to open in the 1970s, with Kingswinford the first in 1971, followed by Stourbridge, Gornal Wood, Brierley Hill, Sedgley and then last year, Perton in Staffordshire.
