Sainsbury’s unveils plans for factory site

wd2915964.jpgSainsbury’s today unveiled its new vision for a supermarket in Wombourne – and insisted it had resolved all the issues which led to its original masterplan being thrown out.

The supermarket giant has submitted amended plans to build a superstore on a derelict factory site, and says it would set up a regular bus service to ferry shoppers to and from the village to help boost business for local traders. South Staffordshire District Council threw out the store’s original plans for a supermarket to be created on a derelict factory site in Heath Mill Road industrial estate.

They claimed a superstore could “destroy” the village and trade for local businesses.

Residents reacted angrily to the refusal and more than 700 people have signed a petition calling for Sainsbury’s to be given permission.

Bosses are battling a bid by rival Tesco, which announced its own plans just to build a supermarket yards away just weeks after the first plans were unveiled.

Plans for the new Sainsbury’s store were being unveiled to the public this afternoon at Wombourne Library.

As well as the regular “bus hopper” service to ferry shoppers from the store to the heart of the village, the company has also reduced the planned sales area and included a customer restaurant.

Signs pointing to the village would also be installed and bosses insist they would work with local businesses and put locally-sourced goods for sale in store.

A new road junction would also be created outside the supermarket.
