Rethink over scheme for eyesore

Multi-million pound plans to help breathe new life into the site of Dudley’s landmark Cavendish House are back on the drawing board just weeks after being withdrawn because of design issues.

Developer Abstract decided to slightly re-think its plans for the derelict former social security building dubbed a “monstrous eyesore” on the skyline after council planning officers raised a number of minor concerns. It is confident the revised plans will now be acceptable.

The re-submitted proposal involves knocking down the building and putting offices on the site. A separate plan for a high-tech health centre is expected to be put forward again in the next few weeks.

The centre is expected to feature a pharmacy and training facilities as well as a cafe and creche while staff would have access to the latest technology. It could be made available to Dudley Primary Care Trust if the scheme gets the go ahead.

Abstract spokesman Ian Thorn said the decision was taken to “tweak” the plans to ensure any problems are dealt with before its goes in front of the development control committee.

He said: “We want to transform Cavendish House into a landmark gateway building.

“We want to create high quality office space which will have the huge potential to bring a substantial number of jobs and investment to the town.

“Cavendish House was once a major centre of employment and we hope the site will be able to become part of the local economy again.

“It has long been an eyesore blot on the landscape and we are very excited abut these proposals.

“Hopefully the transformation of this building will be a catalyst for the whole regeneration of the borough.” Demolition of the building is a significant step forward in delivering the £500 million pound masterplan for the heart of the town, in particular the area known as the Cavendish Quarter. There are nine key sites in Dudley, including the Cavendish Quarter, set to be overhauled over the next 15 to 20 years.
