Baggies complete Carson signing

carson1.jpgAlbion have completed the signing of Liverpool goalkeeper Scott Carson for what could eventually rise to a club record fee.

They have agreed to pay £3.25m for the former Villa loan star with the amount potentially rising to £3.75m with add-ons.

The formalities of the deal were completed this afternoon, with the England international putting pen to paper on a four-year contract at the Hawthorns.

The £3.75m fee beats the previous record of £3.6m forked out for Wales international Robert Earnshaw.

what a buy, and with kiely’s experience he can only get better aged only 22. will he be the albion keep for the next 10 years or even longer ? he played over 30 games for a top half team last year and broke into the england 1st team - just prooves we are heading in the right direction. Well done to all at the albion to sign him, even after the jibes given from the loss of gera and phillips you know what your doing and as as true baggie I have faith.

How far have West Brom come in a few short years.

We are signing one of Englands goalkeepers who thought 6/7 years ago that we would be in a position to say “we have signed a Current England international”
    Top marks TM and JP

Finally it’s done…fantastic signing in my opinion and can’t wait to see him action

£3.25m….bargain as his valuation was £10m last season

Fantastic news, just a striker and a midfielder to come and watch out Premier League.

  7. stu said:

quality signing. You cant knock this. He has played for england and has good experience of the premier league. If you compare this to the 2.75 million Villa are supposed to be paying for Friedel I think this represents excellent value for money. There is at leat 10+ years left in him and whilst most baggies fans will hate me for saying this if we do end up going down I belive we can recoup alot more than we have paid for him. Just a commanding centre half/centre midfielder and a decent forward neeeded now.

  8. wolvesmod said:

so err… what’s Dean Kiely got to say about all this? Didn’t he get you promoted?

    8) its called progession and Kiely will have to fight for his place. I am sure TM does not believe in favourites something MM could do well to learn

  12. Ant Lowe said:

He’s received a lot of criticism, mainly to do with his England howler, and a bit of inconsistency with villa. But I reckon he’s a very good signing, he’s 22 but has proved he’s got quality, just needs that bit of consistency! He’ll be kept busy whatever happens!!!

  13. Sherlock Baggie said:

Fantastic work by ToMo, JP & the entire backroom staff! Ignore the villa fans who rubbish him, it’s like a few of our fans rubbishing KP now he’s gone, only the villa fans have bigger egos. if they’d been offered the same deal they’d have snapped him up too. An England international keeper at The Baggies…Get in there!

  14. SuperBobbyT said:

Fantastic signing and congratulations to JP for making this happen. Any chairman is sometimes on the receiving end of moans from fans so in this instance I think the chairman deserves immense credit for the seasons signings so far.

    8. balls to Kiely. and just how exactly did he get us promoted???. I would go as far as saying we would have been promoted sooner if not for Dean. His last decent game for us came against the wolves at the custard bowl in the play offs and how long ago was that!!

  20. chris said:

The team last year got us promoted not just kiely, yes his contribution was “good” at times. but taking that next step was needed - I hope Kiely will help Carson in becoming a true hero at the hawthorns.

  21. laughingwolf said:

He is NOT a current England International he’s an ex England International that was under mc claren you know the bloke who was england manager for minutes. no.5 his valuation wasnt 10 mil villa offered 3mil and liverpool said no selling a goalie to a top 4 challenger and priced them out but the MEDIA said 10 mil as it was carsons form dipped and o’neill got a lucky espcape as was no longer interested. I love it that albion fans get excited but he would be wolves 3rd choice!

  23. Sherlock Baggie said:

8 Wolvesmod: Yes Kiely was between the sticks when we got promoted, but are you seriously trying to tell me that you wouldn’t try and improve the squad if you ever make it back to the promised land? He won’t be the only player with his starting position under threat either… It’s called competition! As a veteran pro & international Kiely is used to it.

  24. wbabomber said:

We have also put a bid in for a European based midfielder, his club are mulling over the offer.
I honestly didnt beleive we had the ability as a club to entice a player like Carson, we are on the up and everybody is obviously taking notice!!

  25. SuperBobbyT said:

Great that we get this guy for under £4M when Villa were quoted £8-£10M.

Another big signing to add to the superb squad Albion already have. So now how can local rivals mock and say Sir Tony Mowbray and the board are not trying to stay in the Premiership. Carson is quality and Dean Kiely will have to up his game to get a regular start. That is exactly the same at any other football club, so wolvesmod’s try to stir things just shows his stupidity. He only needs to ask the same question of Hennesey and the other goalkeepers. The answer would probably be, I still get paid but I do want to be the regular keeper and am upping my game and fitness to prove I deserve the shirt more than the other keepers. Wolvesmod also forgets that the regular keeper could get injured (like Matt Murray !)and the keeper in waiting takes his place. Is it just me, or do others find our rivals seem 3 course under damp ?

He’s not even an England keeper he’s played one game and cost us a place in the Euro’s LOL. So er, yeah well done. Great Signing! The Villa are laughing!

At least we have a CURRENT International Goalkeeper. Who proved himself against Germany and Holland away.

  50. Spuggy Baggie said:

Brilliant. Can’t believe our last three signings. Last keeper to play a competitive match for England, a left back who won the league in his last four seasons and has given up Champions League football to join us and a Dutch U21 who won the Euro U21 championships less than a year ago! Unbelieveable. Well done JP and TM for having the ambition, guts and charisma to get these players on board.

Wolvesmod - It’s called evolution. If you don’t improve you are just a championship team in waiting.

  51. WestBromJack said:

This is unbelievable. I have to say that I had to read this several times for it to sink in. People keep going on about his mistake for England and how it has ruined his career. Everyone makes mistakes, it depends on how and where you make them. All Carson needs is confidence and Mogga is the perfect manager for this type of player. Best signintg in years. Good job JP ,Mogga and the rest.

It’s a good signing for you, no doubt about it - however, I am definitely not jealous, bearing in mind that we currently have two international-class goalies in our squad, neither of whom we have had to fork out any transfer fee for.

speaking as an ex semi pro keeper why did he cost us a place in the euro’s why not blame the defenders or the midfielders that never passed to the strikers who could shoot on goal that where that poor could not have hit a barn door but no its always the keeper.

You stick to your league and your team and we will stick to ours

Your awesome football knowledge, its incredible, have you considered replacing Lawro at the BBC, you are right up there with his knowledge, tip top wolves fans.

Oh by the way there is a postage stamp shortage in my office, someone bought one but then the regular wolves posters on the albion board like laughing wolf stole it and wrote their entire football knowledge on the glue side and now its only half as sticky as it was.

No.47 (used to be my house number)CarterVilla. Thanks for that mate. It sounds a genuine assessment from a sensible Midlander. I can’t wait to play The Villa again. It seems like centuries ago. First time was at The Hawthorns, 1944. Villa had an ‘old’ team, lots of ex-Internationals. We were relatively young and buzzing. After just 3minutes; Albion 1 Villa 0. After 90 minutes:Albion 1 Villa 5. It was my first humble lesson in thinking the game was over when we scored first. How could we lose after such a start? I WAS only 13 years old. It was very quiet at WBGS on the Monday in class.

  89. ProudToBeABaggie said:

    49. Saying Carson cost us the Euro place is like saying Hennessey cost Wolves a play off place, one mistake didn’t cost us a Euro place, we had enough qualifying games to secure a place if we were good enough. Hennessey let Gera’s shot through his legs, without this Wolves would have had 1 more point a 1 goal less conceded. Enough to make the play-offs. But like England, over all of the games Wolves weren’t good enough. All keepers make mistakes. Remember Seaman letting Ronaldinho’s cross over his head in the World Cup finals, remember him being lobbed from way-out in the Cup winners cup final. David ‘Calamity’ James has made his share of mistakes. All of them brilliant keepers, and I think Carson can be as good as any of them. Hennessey’s a good keeper but I’d take Carson over him any day. In a way I’m glad he made the high profile mistake he did. If his confidence is knocked Mowbray’s the man to restore it. A £10million pound keeper for £4million; bargain.

I think he will improve but lets face it he wouldnt get infront of hennesey or murray. I think you will find he has moved to you because no existing premier league club wants him.

This is a great signing for the club and he will hopefully help keep Albion out of relegation for next season. Kiely has had it easy lately and maybe this will push him to work harder as Carson will provide better competition.

What a fantastic signing for the Albion!! For us to spend that amount of money on any player is rare but on a goalkeeper, it’s unheard of. I see laughing sto…err wolf sorry is spouting of his usual rubbish.

Even at 3.25m, this is a bargain in my opinion. As for him being Wolves no.3, well he’d have agree to go there first wouldn’t he??

However, fellow baggie fans, don’t go over the top talking about top ten and all the rest of it. Whilst this is a great signing, it’s still going to be tough next season, but we’ve got a great chance of staying up I feel now.

Just a bit more tinkering to do now and we’ll then have the raw materials to make a good fist of the Premiership next season.

You know the chances are that we’ll pass you going up as you tumble down unless Mowbary can get more players in. You seem to have lost Carson and your foreign players may ‘not cut the mustard’ early on because the premiership is the hardest league to debut in.

You can fool some of the people some of the time………

Look at last seasons results and table. Albion finished Champions due to a nutmegged goal against England’s, as you put it number 1 ? They all flap and make a mistakes sometimes, but you hope it isn’t too often.

Can’t believe you’ve got anything to shout about while mad mick is still there.
This is a great signing for us and as many have said Carson just needs a bit of confidence rebuilding. Villa did obviously want him but there was a problem there from Liverpools point of view so to get a player from a top 6 club (whatever the international credentials he has) is a real statement of intent from Albion and one that has the blue and white side of the black country salivating at the thought of the new Premiership season starting and having a team that will compete in it rather than just participate.Well done TM JP and the new Technical director. I have been really impressed with the transfer dealings this summer so far.

Dear oh dear. Mickey boy. These are ridiculously stupid comments even by your high standards. Jest read through them again.
To the enlightened Wulfies who have posted considered comments on this thread. Yes I rate Matt Murray very highly but I think I’m correct in saying that he either played very few or possibly no games in the prem due to injury. This brings us to the point, will he ever be fully fit again? It gives me no pleasure to bring this up as surely no one in their right mind takes pleasure from players being injured but it is a worry. Hennessy I rate as a very promising young keeper who has only had just over one season in the CC. Carson has played in the prem and at international level where the finishing is much more clinical. If he was so bad at the Villa, why was he never dropped? He’s not the finished article but has the potential to be. Like Hennessy but he’s further up that road.
