Stephen Ward insists he is still prepared to play anywhere despite his two-goal salvo at Hereford.
The Wolves forward – who has spent much of his Molineux career on the left wing – scored a brace in the 3-1 win to put his knee injury behind him, as he and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake forged a promising understanding up front.
He said: “I enjoyed it. I hadn’t played up front for a while so it was good. It’s always good to hit the back of the net but I’ll play in whatever position the gaffer wants me to.
“It was strange because playing on the wing, I was probably concentrating a bit more on getting crosses in and neglecting the other side of it, such as getting in the box.”
“Playing with Sylvan Ebanks-Blake makes it easier for you really. If the manager asks me to play anywhere – at the back, on the wing wherever – then I’m happy as long as I’ve got a shirt or I’m in contention.
“It was a good game but the most important thing was the result after losing the first game. I know it’s only pre-season but winning is a habit and we won well last night.”
Ward was heavily hampered by a knee injury last season, which saw him playing through the pain barrier before succumbing to the knife.
He said: “My knee feels great. I have to keep the maintenance work up. But that work is just something I have to do.
“Every player wants to play and there’s only a few things that will stop you from playing. I just wanted to keep going until I was told ‘you’re not playing’ and I was like a bad schoolkid.
“I think most footballers would do the same – you play through any pain just to be playing.
“It was just one of those things that happened. I was just unfortunate it got worse and it forced me to stop.
“It used to hurt me after training and there would be mornings where I was sore.
“But I’m fine now. With maintenance and the work I’ve been doing with the physio Steve Kemp, my knee feels strong.”

OK Wardy, be prepared by all means. We all know you need to say this, however striker is the best position for him and the team and playing to strengths is key this season if any positives are going to come from this. Lets all hope he improves and pushes the others for places, last thing we want is the main bunch running out of steam and ideas game in game out

We should play players in the right position though. We learnt last year that it doesn’t pay when you don’t.
The kid has got a great attitude, and as long as he is doing the business in training and friendlies such as this then he should always be in the reckoning. His desire to play for the club as and when he is needed should be a lesson for the likes of a certain Mr F Eastwood - oh well, glad that bad apple has now been chucked out of the barrel!

Mick sees something special in this lad. Lets give him a chance for gods sake. Hew was played wide left last season and did not do a terrible job. You can not blame him for the mess we got ourselves in. He was not great but he was far from bad.

Ok let’s forget the talk about Ward, McCarthy, and even Eastwood (thank God, he’s gone), and focus on the short sighted nature of this club in the past. Robbie Keane is now valued at 20 million pounds, and Joleon Lescott may be worth half that amount. These are two players we could have built a dynasty around. Instead of paying them Prem wages and keeping them on board we replaced them with sub standard players who had a shade of their ability. If Kightly, SEB, and Keogh are half as good as Lescott and Robbie we must keep them.

However in today’s climate of ever spiralling wage demands the club will have to find the money from somewhere, and I’m afraid that somewhere would have to come from the fans through increased ticket prices, replica shirts etc. That in turn may result in lower gates which means the club loses money and there you have a vicious circle my friend. I do not know a solution to that other than get into the Premier and stay there !!

By the way did anyone here actually go to Hereford. I did along with 569 other Wolves supporters. Stephen Ward was the best player on the pitch. You can only score against the opponents your playing against and he did twice. He was strong, sharp and linked up well with Blake. Any of you lot who want to keep slagging of our team, manager, board and any one else you can think of, carry on. Your just a bunch of Baggies fans in disguise.

As for the best player on the pitch i will agree with you cuz Ward and Blake linked up very well but i was also very impressed with the Stearman, glad to see M. Davies finally back. Good luck to the lad cuz been waiting a lot time to see what he can do!!
