Huge Tesco store plans revealed

TescoOne of the busiest Tesco stores in the Midlands will be knocked down and a shop twice the size built in its place as part of a multi-million pound plan revealed today – generating 180 jobs for the Black Country.

Investment in the 24-hour store at Burnt Tree island, Dudley, shows the company considers it to be one of the most “important” branches say bosses.

Under the plans the supermarket would be demolished and one which is “big- ger, brighter and more energy efficient” would replace it. It would be built on two levels with the lower level a car park.

Corporate affairs manager, Tony Fletcher, said the existing store built in the 1990s was outdated. He said: “The store is not built to modern-day standards, the aisles often become crowded.

“We could have extended the existing one but this would not solve all the issues we want to address.

“We have confidence in Dudley and that is why we are investing millions into this store, it is very important to us and one of the busiest in the region.”

Details of the plans come as a public inquiry concluded into controversial congestion-busting plans for Burnt Tree Island

Highways bosses in Sandwell and Dudley want to replace the island with a series of traffic lights and widen some of the approaching roads, but the proposals met with objections from transport businesses.
