Buy young policy still best – Mick

wd2908810wrexham-v-wolves.jpgMick McCarthy says Wolves owe everything to their ‘young and hungry’ buying policy – because they would have overlooked star man Michael Kightly in the big-spending years.

Wolves are preparing for the new season having persuaded £3m-rated Kightly to sign a new four-year deal just 18 months after they paid just £25,000 for him from non-League Grays.

Signing Kightly now looks like being one of the bargain signings of recent times. Having signed 16 players under 24 in his two years in charge, boss McCarthy has bought into the more prudent policy heavily endorsed by his owner-chairman Steve Morgan. And McCarthy is convinced the club are reaping the dividends.

“I’ve been wrong on some of them (signings), but if you only set your targets on certain people, Michael Kightly would never have come to the club,” said McCarthy.

“I remember being at a dinner after I’d signed Kightly and I don’t think anyone there thought I was sane – apart from Jez (Moxey).

“I think people thought ‘how can the mighty Wolves be signing Kightly from non-League Grays’?

“Eighteen months on, he’s the hero and no one would argue he’s one of the best signings we’ve made.

“I’m not going to say anyone’s wrong thinking it wouldn’t come off, because we only get proved right somewhere down the line.”

McCarthy still believes the team needs experience, despite the signing of Chris Iwelumo. But he says the existing squad have the mental strength for anything.

Enough with the talking Mick, it’s alright saying they’re good enough and Can handle the pressure etc etc. Well come on show us then! I have said time and time again Mick needs a good Number 2. I just think he needs new ideas, i don’t believe he can get the best out of our players on his own. TC has done nothing for this club.

I love this man, sick of hearing young and hungry. Shut up shut up. Please just assemble a team good enough to get us promoted and play decent football. It was well documented he had never seen Kites play. Apart from SEB,Keough and foley who else has really performed. Remember WH came through the Accademy. It is also worth noting if you don’t get promoted this year i will guarantee we will lose the better players to other clubs Quality not quantity i thinks.

I think you enjoy it more when we fail than when we succeed so that you can take your miserable lives out on someone else.

Why not try being positive and support the lads rather than try and kill everyone with negativity.

Lets see where we are by the end of the year. If we are top 4 will you be behind MM then? or will you keep moaning just to save face?

What has gone has gone, let it go.

Here is my assessment on the younger signings :-

    Kites - quality signing 8/10
Jarvis - will get better 7/10
    Elokobi - ditto 7/10
Keogh - must be more selfish 7/10
Stearman - exactly what is needed 7/10
Foley - should have been rested 7/10
Edwards - have not seen enough yet 6.5/10
Vokes - one for the future 6.5/10
Elliot - not done enough 4/10
Ward - promising start and played on wing 4/10
Collins - looked good with Edwards but clumsy 3/10

  18. Andy said:

I wonder if all of the articles heaping praise on Taff Evans for spotting Kites will be re-written in due course. Mick, Jez and Morgan are the inner party, the players are the outer party and the supporters are nothing more than proles.

I do think the policy is right but lets not kid ourselves - it comes from Moxey wanting the wage bill reduced so it’s not about buying young and hungry it’s about buying cheap.
The fact we bought Kightly for next to nothing and paid him a low salary for a year is great. And now we are paying him more like the going rate and can get £3m for him if we decided to cash in.
All this is great for the Balance Sheet and has got Moxey and McCarthy a few admirers.
But personally I want to be celebrating promotion not celebrating that we are in good financial shape.
Keeping the club solvent is something any half decent accountant could do but it’s doing that while achieving success thats more difficult.

We are no further forward as a club now than the day Moxey joined. No closer to promotion and playing to smaller crowds.

I am sure there will be those in the Billy Quiet stand who will be dancing in the streets when Moxey announces the financial position of the club next summer.
Personally I will be joining the true fans from the South Bank and only celebrating if we go up. If we don’t go up this season then surely Mick and Mox will have had enough time.

Those people on here and on match day that just slag off the club at the first sign of weakness sickens me. Yes I have my doubts over some of the things that MM has done since being at the club.. but all managers make mistakes, regardless of who it is. But the be all and end all of this is that ‘proper fans get behind their team, NO MATTER WHAT, through thick and thin’

So why don’t those critics save their breaths and get behind their team… It may just make all the difference.

Spot on Steve Bull Stand! We have the dreams, but the club don’t seem to have the true desire to get promoted!

If Jarvis, Kites and SEB start this season fit our goal scoring record will be a significant improvement on last year. Although I agree we need a new centre back, only two sides conceded less goals than us last year. A fit again Mark Davies is like a new £2m midfelder, playing alongside David Jones will give us a lot more attacking options. Iwelumo at 400K is a steal and should take some of the attention off SEB. What’s the panic the squads there ~ just keep ‘em match fit and the jobs a good un!

There are people on this blogg who are obviously not regular attenders at the Molinuex you can tell by the remarks they make–Totaly off the point and some have obviously seen some of the players on the pitch particularly the ones who get all the flack for not being good enough. On the whole I think apart from one or two players most signed by MM have been average players, one or two a little better. The main thing is MM failed last season to mould what he had into a winning outfit- I hope he learns from that experience and we progress.Slating players is not the way forward the Manager is with us for the forseable future-Lets give him the benefit of the doubt. Please lets move on E&S-

young and hungry is great, but disappointed at the lack of ambition we show sometimes.

Would love to see us going after Shittu, or Ledley, or some fringe premiership players - some quality proven players.

If we don’t go up this year, ebanks blake and kightly will be off … lets take a gamble, the prize is £50-£60m in first season up! WE’re not even spending that much when you offset income from players going out!

  55. UBWolf said:

Not particularly keen on MM after watching the most horrible football last year but I think that was based on the expectation. This year, no expectation and I will hope for the best. I think we have bought some decent players to challenge but the challenge is for the manager to get them to gel. For my part, I’m pleased MM is optimistic, I’m pleased there seems to be positive words coming from the players (although George needs a bresk from it)and it is my responsibility to back the players when they pull on the shirt. Whether it’s Collins or S.Ward, I, with my sons will clap them as they warm up during the match…without this, we just give too much ammunition to the lot down the road and let ourselves down…!

  56. Jacko said:

Tunn Lad I like your sense of humour, how early in the season do you think you will have conceded the ton. Rumour has it that Mowbray has bet on you conceded a hundred by christmas and thats why he’s not really trying to sign a decent keeper or centre back. We are moaning that we need another decent centre back for a season in the championship and we conceded less goals than you. You must be bricking it, but don’t worry at least there’s Phillips and Gera to score/create the goals oh no I forgot theyv’e saved themselves from the humiliation.

  57. Matt&Wolves said:

Can we please get of the Eastwood bandwagon? The bloke has gone! It appeared there was issues! It disrupted the team and if he was so fantastic how come we struggled to get rid?

This story is just another one churned out to keep the fans happy because we haven’t done any great shakes in the transfer market (buying and selling).

They said it’s a 3year job and this is the third so this is the time to tell. We need a few more players in key areas and thats it. I personally think we should sign an older player as they will be more mature and help steady the game on the pitch, like we had with Irwin.

The way Eastwood was treated was a disgrace and if MM had done his homework, Eastwood would never have been signed in the first place. Bad management all round. This is the reason why i don’t believe MM is the right manager to establish us the prem assuming we ever get there under him. We have some very good players at the Mol - we now need a couple of centre halfs with pace (loaned, begged stolen or borrowed - who cares) a midfield play maker/ Captain/ leader on the pitch - No more strikers! & the key ingredient some decent TACTICS! Or a No 2 with a brain to make MM look good - failing that - just get together with Moxey and get the annual “slate the fans - Molineux Factor - you know the usual seasonal BS”

We have some promising strikers with SEB, Vokes, and dare we say Koegh and Chris thingy
Maybe if Keogh wasnt running around like a headless chicken and he had some regular shooting practice he may well score more this time around

NB Vokes Opta stats were excellent last season - lets just hope he isnt treated as badly as Freddie and gets a decent run based on abillity and nothing less

Buying young is a good idea BUT having a true balance in the team is even better - an experienced head that can slow down the pace and dictate is what we desperately need - A leader that can help the youngsters along

If we get rid of several donkeys that MM has brought in that would free up wages that could be used for better players but we may aswell dream on as MM believes that if we buy enough players one of them will turn out to be Kites - who we all know MM never ever saw play before he came to the Mol - but hey dont let that stand in the way of self praise MM - Moxey has taught you well!

Sorry Happy Clappers - same tactics next season will produce similar results - Failure
Nothing to do with doom & gloom, just facing facts - your beloved MM hasnt a clue and the E&S reckons he’s after ANOTHER striker? Why? Because he’s not sure who his best front two are! What a flaming JOKE!

#68 - I would respond, but your supposed point makes about as much sense as any word spluttered by Gordon ‘Stalin’ Brown at PMQs this afternoon.

My bet, to expand upon the point I made a few moments ago, is that if Wolves lose or draw many of their first few games, there’ll be a winter of discontent at managerless Molineux as well as in people’s bank balances.

Can you imagine the uproar there’ll be if - God forbid - we lose two and draw one of the first three games?

If, however, we actually win a string of matches and appear to be doing well, then the overwhelming majority of people on here who’ve carped on about MM will look a little bit silly.

What camp does that put me in? I really don’t care, to be honest.

Because, just as Mick McCarthy should learn, talk on the pages of the Express & Star is easy. It’s performance on the pitch that matters. That’s where “quality counts”.

And, forgive me for reiterating the point, but we just finished seventh in the league and lost 1-0 to a non-league team in pre-season. Yes, quality counts. The stats show we’ve been lacking in it.

You can’t claim the high ground by suggesting that only some supporters want promotion, nor do you do you make any sense claiming that only those in the south bank are true fans. Yet your post, apart from the above, makes good sense. MM will have had enough time at the end of this season and we are no further forward than when Moxey joined. The point for debate is do we think that the ‘young and hungry’ thing is a con as you suggest or is it an inspired approach to gain our dream. Only time will tell. I am willing to predict a top two finish under MM next season with our new signings and I still won’t boo if we aren’t in the top two at Christmas. One more season to the Promised Land!

72 spot on, you would have thought that MM would be more tactically astute with his international experience and being as he was a defender by trade that he would have sorted the defence out. Like i have already said, is MM the man to take us to the promised land and keep us there? No way. Based on what i have seen so far, we will be lucky if we reach the top 6 this season. It is a much tougher league this time around. I’m being negative yes but the facts speak for themselves, unless MM improves tactically dramatically and doesn’t persist in playing players who ain’t good enough for Walsall, nevermind Wolves then i’m afraid we will be in the same position 12 months from now.

we cant afford prem wages, the only teams that can are the parachute payment ones.Bridget and Tony you seem to have forgotten about Stearman good defender with pace and experience. We finished 7th last year,i believe we will have a better squad this year and will make the play offs at least.Whenn MM came in he had only 1 week or was it 2 weeks to get a team on the field,he did that and we got into the play offs even though most were predicting relegation, last season was disapointing because some players didnt improve and MM did make mistakes, the strength of the squad was one,if the team fails this season MM and Moxey will be out of a job.

Has anybody noticed how the “Young and Hungry”, meaning the academy youngsters, has now turned into “Buying young and hungry”?

Our own kids are being treated badly by turnip head, they are not getting their breaks, and yet some of them were good enough to play for the England youth teams. MM’s restricted vision is damaging the whole Academy dream.

Looks like we’ll loose many of them by the end of this season, shame, as it could have proven a great success. Remember when Glenda went and the Academy kids made up the first team numbers? They were real hungry Wolves! I enjoyed that season.

The size of the Wolves squad has become a joke amongst other clubs. They just joke about being able to sell Thick Mick any scrag-end they want to be rid of!

Why don’t I think that next season will be any better than the last season? Nothing changes…

Never posted her before, but you are already the King of the board!!!! Giving your orders to the E&S! Moron…

Happy-clappers like you are the minority, Wolves fans have voted with their feet. Season ticket sales are down by a third, and income this season will be much lower.

Sales in the Club shop are down by nearly 50%, the majority of fans have made their opinion known about the current failing Wolves management team.

I believe that we will be lucky to finish in the top 10, let alone the top 6. This manager is out of control. His ego massively outweighs his abilities. His track record is that of a serial-failure. Everything he touches ends in tears. And so it will be at Wolves as well.

64 Truth is you have no idea if these litle gems will cut it at all you no nothing about most of them. Even your manager is really untried at this level, your living in a world of hope rather than genuine rational expectation. I actually understand that buying in this way is the only way our clubs can attempt to get and stay in the premiership. I actually think from early signs that you have a decent manager and hope for his sake he does ok. But for SOME of the arrogant dim-wits that appear on here from time to time, well nuff said.

This season will be as tough as ever to get out of, it won’t be a cakewalk for anyone. It requires gutsy performances on matchdays not just training sessions (puts a shift in springs to mind) plus a bit of luck, injuries and confidence throughout the playing staff. It will also require a manager bold enough to keep all the players interested in playing for Wolves from the heart, and that means if they are underperforming then drop them. Give someone else a go, if they are scoring goals then don’t drop them…lessons to be learned from last season…has the manager learned anything or will he always be claiming he made the right decisions even if things are going persistently wrong

PS Well done to Stephen Ward on his brace tonight against Hereford, I’m not a fan of his but if he can pressure the strikers then it can only be good for the team and will earn acclaim. He is no winger and we have plenty of cover in all departments this season bar Central Defence, so no makeshift wingers, midfielders or strikers this season please Mick…It won’t wash, play the players to their strengths and we may have a chance to achieve something this season

  91. bbfootiebabe said:

83 - agree with that comment!!

  92. E11 Wolf said:

If Stephen ward continues to do well then he might be an answer. I cannot believe Mick really wants another striker but if he has budgetted for one then keep SW and spend the cash on the much needed defender. Shittu really should be in the frame because he can be real class.

Someone above did mention that most of Micks signings have come ‘out of the blue’ whereas those that we supposedly know about hardly ever do. I think this is the management being good businessmen.

I am sick of the Scots nicking our targets so if we got Shittu then that would be really satidfying cos it means rangers didn’t.

  93. Bridget & Tony said:

90 Agreed S Ward deserves some credit for taking his chances last night - Never blamed him for playing wide left - just thought that MM was giving the lad a no win so-called opportunity - whilst Daniel Jones was on loan to Cobblers and clearly would have been better given a chance wide left instead of S Ward

80 Pip we did know re:Stearman - but again one injury and we are back to square one?

How many unwanted squad players do we have now without a reserve team? - lets hope that MM and Moxey have somewhere for them all to go - and we do hope that MM and Moxey are somewhere else - hopefully before the season is too far gone to salvage - no not doom & gloom - just looking at the facts as most people do!

Have to agree with you Mick. You don’t need to be 35 just to have experience - look at Stearman. Too often in the past we have bought mature veterans who were not interested in playing for us, Frankowski, Anderton to name but two.

101 Mark Beevers 18 yrs 1.93m Height - just signed a 4 year extension till 2012 - defender/ centre half - by all accounts very good fairly pacey/ not slow according to Sheff Wed fans

Prem clubs already sniffing - but the lad not interested as Sheffield hometown boy - doesnt want to join Prem club to play reserve team football

Be a very good acquisition IF Wolves can get him. Unless Sheff Wed are desperate to sell - it aint gonna happen - and we wont be head of a possibly long cue for this lad!

Probably more spin from Molineux to keep fans interested - believe it IF it happens! Moxey desperate to sell more season tickets so more names will be banded around until the season starts - Just remember Moxey = Bums on seats
The truth is out there somewhere, but can Moxey be trusted anymore???

    We think NOT!

S Ward was player of the month season before last by scoring six times - then he stopped scoring. As a winger he was a joke (I remember him at QPR and still have nightmares) - but as a central striker he needs a good run - with Kites- before we really know what he can do. Play him in all the friendlies and especially the Blackburn one.
