Mick McCarthy says Wolves owe everything to their ‘young and hungry’ buying policy – because they would have overlooked star man Michael Kightly in the big-spending years.
Wolves are preparing for the new season having persuaded £3m-rated Kightly to sign a new four-year deal just 18 months after they paid just £25,000 for him from non-League Grays.
Signing Kightly now looks like being one of the bargain signings of recent times. Having signed 16 players under 24 in his two years in charge, boss McCarthy has bought into the more prudent policy heavily endorsed by his owner-chairman Steve Morgan. And McCarthy is convinced the club are reaping the dividends.
“I’ve been wrong on some of them (signings), but if you only set your targets on certain people, Michael Kightly would never have come to the club,” said McCarthy.
“I remember being at a dinner after I’d signed Kightly and I don’t think anyone there thought I was sane – apart from Jez (Moxey).
“I think people thought ‘how can the mighty Wolves be signing Kightly from non-League Grays’?
“Eighteen months on, he’s the hero and no one would argue he’s one of the best signings we’ve made.
“I’m not going to say anyone’s wrong thinking it wouldn’t come off, because we only get proved right somewhere down the line.”
McCarthy still believes the team needs experience, despite the signing of Chris Iwelumo. But he says the existing squad have the mental strength for anything.

All manager make bad buys. If Alex Ferguson can make horrendous mistakes so too can other less gifted managers. Paul Ince made mistakes last year and he’ll be making some at the moment.

I do think the policy is right but lets not kid ourselves - it comes from Moxey wanting the wage bill reduced so it’s not about buying young and hungry it’s about buying cheap.
The fact we bought Kightly for next to nothing and paid him a low salary for a year is great. And now we are paying him more like the going rate and can get £3m for him if we decided to cash in.
All this is great for the Balance Sheet and has got Moxey and McCarthy a few admirers.
But personally I want to be celebrating promotion not celebrating that we are in good financial shape.
Keeping the club solvent is something any half decent accountant could do but it’s doing that while achieving success thats more difficult.
We are no further forward as a club now than the day Moxey joined. No closer to promotion and playing to smaller crowds.
I am sure there will be those in the Billy Quiet stand who will be dancing in the streets when Moxey announces the financial position of the club next summer.
Personally I will be joining the true fans from the South Bank and only celebrating if we go up. If we don’t go up this season then surely Mick and Mox will have had enough time.

If Jarvis, Kites and SEB start this season fit our goal scoring record will be a significant improvement on last year. Although I agree we need a new centre back, only two sides conceded less goals than us last year. A fit again Mark Davies is like a new £2m midfelder, playing alongside David Jones will give us a lot more attacking options. Iwelumo at 400K is a steal and should take some of the attention off SEB. What’s the panic the squads there ~ just keep ‘em match fit and the jobs a good un!

There are people on this blogg who are obviously not regular attenders at the Molinuex you can tell by the remarks they make–Totaly off the point and some have obviously seen some of the players on the pitch particularly the ones who get all the flack for not being good enough.On the whole I think apart from one or two players most signed by MM have been average players, one or two a little better. Not particularly keen on MM after watching the most horrible football last year but I think that was based on the expectation. This year, no expectation and I will hope for the best. I think we have bought some decent players to challenge but the challenge is for the manager to get them to gel. For my part, I’m pleased MM is optimistic, I’m pleased there seems to be positive words coming from the players (although George needs a bresk from it)and it is my responsibility to back the players when they pull on the shirt. Whether it’s Collins or S.Ward, I, with my sons will clap them as they warm up during the match…without this, we just give too much ammunition to the lot down the road and let ourselves down…!

Rumour has it that Mowbray has bet on you conceded a hundred by christmas and thats why he’s not really trying to sign a decent keeper or centre back. We are moaning that we need another decent centre back for a season in the championship and we conceded less goals than you. Another deluded ramble by MM, Kites was a fluke signing who was spotted by Taff Evans or a scout as i recall. MM has made a couple of really good signings but the majority haven’t performed. Anybody who says he hasn’t been backed sufficiently by Morgan is talking out of their backside. Elliot,D Ward and Eastwood didn’t contribute for whatever reason last season. The way Eastwood was treated was a disgrace and if MM had done his homework, Eastwood would never have been signed in the first place. Bad management all round. This is the reason why i don’t believe MM is the right manager to establish us the prem assuming we ever get there under him. We missed a trick with Ince going to Blackburn and i for one am gutted that we carry on as we were.

Buying young is a good idea BUT having a true balance in the team is even better - an experienced head that can slow down the pace and dictate is what we desperately need - A leader that can help the youngsters along

My bet, to expand upon the point I made a few moments ago, is that if Wolves lose or draw many of their first few games, there’ll be a winter of discontent at managerless Molineux as well as in people’s bank balances.

The point for debate is do we think that the ‘young and hungry’ thing is a con as you suggest or is it an inspired approach to gain our dream. Only time will tell. I am willing to predict a top two finish under MM next season with our new signings and I still won’t boo if we aren’t in the top two at Christmas. One more season to the Promised Land!

72 spot on, you would have thought that MM would be more tactically astute with his international experience and being as he was a defender by trade that he would have sorted the defence out. Like i have already said, is MM the man to take us to the promised land and keep us there? No way. Based on what i have seen so far, we will be lucky if we reach the top 6 this season. It is a much tougher league this time around. I’m being negative yes but the facts speak for themselves, unless MM improves tactically dramatically and doesn’t persist in playing players who ain’t good enough for Walsall, nevermind Wolves then i’m afraid we will be in the same position 12 months from now.

Has anybody noticed how the “Young and Hungry”, meaning the academy youngsters, has now turned into “Buying young and hungry”?
Our own kids are being treated badly by turnip head, they are not getting their breaks, and yet some of them were good enough to play for the England youth teams. MM’s restricted vision is damaging the whole Academy dream.
Looks like we’ll loose many of them by the end of this season, shame, as it could have proven a great success. Remember when Glenda went and the Academy kids made up the first team numbers? They were real hungry Wolves! I enjoyed that season.
The size of the Wolves squad has become a joke amongst other clubs. They just joke about being able to sell Thick Mick any scrag-end they want to be rid of!
Why don’t I think that next season will be any better than the last season? Nothing changes…

64 Truth is you have no idea if these litle gems will cut it at all you no nothing about most of them. Even your manager is really untried at this level, your living in a world of hope rather than genuine rational expectation. I actually understand that buying in this way is the only way our clubs can attempt to get and stay in the premiership. I actually think from early signs that you have a decent manager and hope for his sake he does ok. But for SOME of the arrogant dim-wits that appear on here from time to time, well nuff said.
This season will be as tough as ever to get out of, it won’t be a cakewalk for anyone. It requires gutsy performances on matchdays not just training sessions (puts a shift in springs to mind) plus a bit of luck, injuries and confidence throughout the playing staff. It will also require a manager bold enough to keep all the players interested in playing for Wolves from the heart, and that means if they are underperforming then drop them. Give someone else a go, if they are scoring goals then don’t drop them…lessons to be learned from last season…has the manager learned anything or will he always be claiming he made the right decisions even if things are going persistently wrong
PS Well done to Stephen Ward on his brace tonight against Hereford, I’m not a fan of his but if he can pressure the strikers then it can only be good for the team and will earn acclaim. He is no winger and we have plenty of cover in all departments this season bar Central Defence, so no makeshift wingers, midfielders or strikers this season please Mick…It won’t wash, play the players to their strengths and we may have a chance to achieve something this season

If Stephen ward continues to do well then he might be an answer. I cannot believe Mick really wants another striker but if he has budgetted for one then keep SW and spend the cash on the much needed defender. Shittu really should be in the frame because he can be real class.
Someone above did mention that most of Micks signings have come ‘out of the blue’ whereas those that we supposedly know about hardly ever do. I think this is the management being good businessmen.

86 Happy Wanderer, I understood that Gerrard signed a new 2 year contract in February and would definitely not be on a free, I would have that about 800k would land him and I think that would be good business. Be interesting to see if anything occurs from our 1.75 bid for Beevers at Sheff Wed, but I can’t see it happening, last years fans player of the year at 18, another year and he’s a 3m player.

S Ward was player of the month season before last by scoring six times - then he stopped scoring. As a winger he was a joke (I remember him at QPR and still have nightmares) - but as a central striker he needs a good run - with Kites- before we really know what he can do. Play him in all the friendlies and especially the Blackburn one.
