Wolves look to Harte and Ward

Mick McCarthyMick McCarthy insists Wolves’ interest in Christophe Berra and Jason Shackell is ‘dead’ - as he hinted at another chance for transfer-listed Darren Ward.

The Wolves boss wants another central defender. He has had bids of £1.5m and £1m respectively for Berra and Shackell rejected by Hearts and Norwich.

He said; “I’m still hopeful of getting another one. We had a bid in for Berra but that deal is dead, as is the Jason Shackell one. They won’t be done at all.

“Hearts are saying he won’t be going anywhere, Shackell is not going to happen, so I’ve moved on from those.

“There are no other bids in. For the moment, those deals are dead as far as I’m concerned and we’re looking elsewhere.

“Who we get I don’t know. It might be that someone comes out from completely out of the blue from somewhere which has never been mentioned.

“But Darren Ward’s still here and he’s been exemplorary in his professionalism.

“While we’re still looking, I’ve still got four centre-halves with Darren Ward. He’s on the list and we’ll see what happens.”

McCarthy, who won’t be taking another look at Cypriot midfielder Valentino Sheilis, believes Ian Harte can challenge George Elokobi for the left-back slot – because he doesn’t see Michael Gray and Daniel Jones as left-backs.

He said: “Ian Harte is training with us and will be travelling to Scotland. He’s here for a couple of weeks and we’ll see what he looks like.

“He’s a free agent, he’s 30, he’s got great quality, he’s got good experience with 64 caps, so we’ll have a look at him.

“George Elokobi is our first choice left-back but we don’t have any real left-sided cover.

“He trained yesterday and looks OK at the moment.

“I’m hoping Micky Gray will sign and he’s still training with us, as is Daniel Jones.

“Daniel isn’t a left-back in my mind, he’s a wide left player, as is Micky – he’s wide left or wide right, he’s not a left-back.”

McCarthy also added that the signing of Chris Iwelumo ends their interest in Peterborough’s Aaron Mclean.

He said: “We were priced out of it anyway – that’s dead because of finances. I just can’t do it.

“Fair play to Peterborough – they have done what we would have done with Michael Kightly.

“There was no chance anyone was going to pay that money and they have shown ambition by keeping their players.

“I’m sure Darren Ferguson is delighted their chairman has set that price.”

Hmmm… where now then? The likelihood is that we will make another signing out of the blue like the Vokes / Stearman deals - I’m sure that MM has the right targets identified and hopefully they will come off.

Still not 100% convinced that the Berra deal is dead as the player himself has not yet publicly stated that he wishes to stay at Hearts, so until he does we shall wait and see. I think that we should also move for Bodde of Swansea (particularly now that Derby have, for about the third or fourth time, stated that they will not be signing him) - he is the right age and will add some steel to the midfield.

On his career before last season, Darren Ward is very capable of playing Championship football. For whatever reason, he had a very poor time in 2007/8 and in my view Mick was right to transfer list him.

It might be that that, like a kick up the rear, he could turn it round. I hope he does, only time will tell.

Not signing Aaron McLean, who would have been a risk, even at £2 million, is no loss.

I don’t know whether to treat this as a smoke screen or just let out a cry of despair.

Centre back has been our main weakness for two years, and if MM is giving up on it just because he’s had bids rejected for two players then I don’t know what to say! We should have more than two bloody targets!

lets hope berra states he now wants a move.

Good managers solve problems. I’m sorry Mick, you have had two years to sortmout our chronic lack of pace at the back, and it is a bigger issue now than it ever was. The reality is nobody wants Ward, so we’re stuck with him. And Jez, if you want another reason why there are less ST Holders, then one look at this story will give you another answer

At the risk of being Lynched. I think Darren Ward is a good player and was a bit unlucky to be dropped last year. I think he deserves a run in the team.

It’d also now be good to generate a few ££££’s coming in to the club too - surely someone out there must want the likes of Potter, Bothroyd and Elliott? (wonder if the wage demands are putiing a few sides off????)

A lot of ‘fans’ mock the defenders, yet did we not have one of the best defensive records in the league?? Was it not 19 clean sheets? Some might say it was down to Hennessey, but thats what he is there for and credit has to go to the back four as well. Yes, the defence looked shaky at times but at the end of the day it was goals scored that was the main problem. If Ward is given another chance, then support him, not criticise him!

  19. Ragster said:

Well I’ll be the first to say I don’t think the current squad is strong enough to win promotion. We needed better quality in our first team and further strengthing of the squad, but with the signings so far he haven’t acheived either. If no more proper quality signings are planned them it could be a similar story as last season!

Birmingham, Derby, QPR and Reading have definately got better squads, plus there are at least 4-5 teams with similar squads but managed better (ie. Bristol City, Ipswich, Crystal Palace…)

Championship players keep you in the championsip, Premier league players get you promoted.

    Players In…….

I think everybody ealises that for a few seasons or since we sold Lescott wolves have been after a centre half!!!

So why we have bought 12 forwards and 10 midfielders in that time and splashed a bit of cash on also ran centre halves is beyond me.

I always think it is short sightedness - Spend £600k on ward, £400k on Collins - Why not spend £1million on a decent centre half instead?

Dan Jones has stated he prefers t play left back and sees himself as a natural left back!!! MM says he sees Jones as a wide front player!!!

Coming back to the result against Wrexham - We should have won it regardless of freindly, it was a freindly for Wrexham as well, but they wanted to win. I think th mindset of MM and his attitude is all wrong.

On paper we have a fantastic squad for the championship - add a couple of quality signigs ie centre half and battling midfielder and we will be their BUT didn’t we say the same last season?
MM was a centre half, why can’t he see a decent centre half?

This is make or break for MM, like every july and august I still don’t know which way it will go, but MM has 12 months to get us up - 1st or 2nd is the minimum requirement NOT the playoff lottery.

    Lets all wait and see?

  29. brummie rob wolves said:

We kept 19 clean sheets last year and it was not all down to the goalkeeper. Darren Ward was not that bad, Collins was!
Stearman has pace and Craddock was quality last season and we need one older pro at the back. I still think we will get another signing. Why not have a go for Gerrard at Walsall?

  30. Greg Cooper said:

I disagree that QPR and Derby have better squads than we do… perhaps on a similar level, but better? Absolutely not. Both clubs have a scattering of quality players for the division but neither are stronger than we are at this moment in time.

Perhaps the rumoured loan move for Chris Gunter would be a good one to go for, or alternatively John Kennedy at Celtic (the guy who almost had his career ruined by Vio Ganea!!) - he is reported to be going on loan to Motherwell but Celtic have denied that this move has gone through.

And re 25 - of course he can see that, which is why he has publicly stated that he is still looking for another centre-half. Have you not actually READ the above article? I quote: “For the moment, those deals are dead as far as I’m concerned and we’re looking elsewhere” and “While we’re still looking, I’ve still got four centre-halves with Darren Ward. He’s on the list and we’ll see what happens”. Try reading what is written before automatically criticising.

The people who say we had one of the best defenses in the league obviously didn’t go to the games last year.

We had a good record because the midfield and Keogh were constantly helping out the inadequate defense! Hence the reason why we scored bugger all.

The problem i have with Darren Ward is that there is probably a reason he was playing for the Palace reserves when we signed him, he wasnt very good. After one season he was then put on the transfer list by us, so he still isnt very good.

Ill be both suprised and dissapointed if he is anywhere near the first team come the start of the season.

We really need to push the boat out now, the next two or three signing will be critical to our chances of success.

This statement does concern me a little. Although it refers to the Mclean deal which is fair enough i hope we are not trying to ‘fluke’ promotion by buying cheap players on cheap wages and hoping they gell. although this has worked for other clubs in the past, nothing should be left to chance, this may be our last chance this season as our better players will be gone if we fail again.hmmmm.

…..WHAT - surely more targets need should have been identified, or are we waiting for more sunderland players to be released?

We had a great defensive record because we played with a back 8 - How many games did we create anything from midfield, the strikers didn’t have any supply!!!

40 Agreed - D Ward could not make the Palace subs bench - as he was nor good enough yet Mad Mick thought he was worth spending money on???

Why not look at loaning a centre half with some pace from a Prem team - a youngster that needs regular games???

The E&S has also stated that Wolves are after yet ANOTHER striker even after signing Chris whathisname; Has MM totally lost the plot??? Are we trying to recruit a world record of strikers at a club??? Or is MM gonna say within a couple of months that he doesnt know his best striking partnership AGAIN???

No reserve team - Where are all these strikers going to go to get a game and how will they get match fitness???

  50. haggstone wolf said:

yep many squads are similar to ours, it seems the current stance is that we ‘hope’ that our team will gell and in turn finish above our rivals. The only team that seem to be taking steps, rightly or wrongly, to get ahead of the rest by paying the wages is the Blues.

Is it really beyond us to offer 15K to 20k a week for one or two quality experienced players that might make the difference?? Afterall we seem content to invest 500k to 1 mil up front plus wages on young potentials that MAY develop into premiership players.

Stop the moaning and groaning. Here is my team for the Plymouth game and I doubt very much whether the blue and white rubbish down the road from me - one of the favourites in our division - will have a better team on show :-

Hennessey Foley Stearman Craddock Elokobi Kites Davies Jones Jarvis Ebanks-Blake Keogh

At least 7 of these are capable of being in the league team of the season!

  56. Dave said:

Ward is old, slow and pretty rubbish (except in the air).

Not good enough at Palace, not good enough for us last season. Why is he still here? Out of pity? Out of weak, indecisive management?

Dan Jones is not a winger. He has played the position before and looked average. He crosses the ball well but has no pace. Maybe he isn’t good enough. A squad player to cover the left-side maybe.

If MM thinks he’s a winger he knows less than I thought he did.

Our defence was poor last season. Please don’t be fooled by all those clean sheets. Our midfield sat back to cover our poor defence. Result? No goals scored.

WoottonWolf - If you cannot see this you must not understand what is going on/not go to games.

MMs insistence on buying more strikers due to our lack of goals last season is laughably naive.

Again - our lack of goals was due to lack of service/midfield. They were all too busy helping out our slow, inept defence.

Must apologise to Nick Phillips about my post yesterday when I didn’t think we needed another left back. I am obviously a plank as Jonathan said. I never knew that Gray wasn’t a left-back. If I’d known he was a wide midfielder, I wouldn’t have mentioned it!! I got confused by the fact he had played left-back for most of his career and is now 33. Mind you, even though MM says that DJ and MG will provide back up on the left wing, I bet he still plays Steve Ward there in front of them. Then again, I suppose he’s not a striker either. Apologies once again guys - I’m off to give myself a thump!

MM is not soft. He knows he will be sacked after a couple of months. He will take over at a division 1/2 side and take all the poor players with him i.e the likes of Elliot, Ward x 2, Collins, Bothroyd, Potter, Mulgrew. Wolves will get rid of them on the cheap. He will have a bargain.(Or so he thinks). That’s why he’s keeping them for now. You know it makes sense.

On 12 June the E&S published this story:

Wolves are understood to have half a dozen bids for new players lodged at clubs at home and abroad.
The two public bids on the table are for Burnley striker Kyle Lafferty and Hearts defender Christophe Berra.
It is also thought that manager Mick McCarthy has bid for Derby midfielder David Jones and Peterborough striker Aaron McLean.
The other two are on tables outside the UK, for two as yet unnamed foreign-based players.

I’m with Stuart (59). What’s happened to the bids for the two foreign-based players?

JIWAL what point did Morgan say he’d spend 30 million to get us up? He didn’t and i personally think he has backed MM sufficiently so far, its just that some of the signings MM has made have been disappointing. Good money was spent on D Ward, Elliot and Eastwood and for whatever reason none of them contributed last season and are no longer wanted after just one season. Thats bad management by MM and he better get it right this season.

I think Harte would be a good signing… good experienced backup for the back four.Dan Jones has played 98% of his games for wolves at left mid so Mick may well see him as a left midfielder. Fair enough if he see’s himself as a defender… look at wayne bridge, he saw himself as a midfielder but the manager (Jonesy) saw him as a full-back and he’s one of the best english leftbacks at the moment.

Darren Ward was very unlucky to be dropped last season, he didnt do anything wrong and always seemed solid and had good strength. he’s someone who wants to play for us too which he came out and said when he was dropped and when he was transfer listed.

    Johnwolf and Jan Rhodes

We don’t have to wait until the season maps itself out before we criticise because of the garbage Mick speaks and the sleepless nights we have about it!

I’ve said it before that there are other Championship sides quietly going about building stronger sides, recruiting under the radar and strengthening where they need to.

Jez and MM are like kids in a toyshop with Morgan’s millions…..one minute its the scalextric, the next the train set…then they find out they can’t afford either so they’ll buy the airfix model because it’s there and they can afford it!

Of course people are looking forward to August because we all love football, our team and the buzz of a new season.

Balanced against that is the concern about lack of overall strategy, team tactics, signings and the absence of anything coming out of Mick’s mouth that has any sense or consistency!

The players are supposedly fitter than they’ve ever been and Mick and Terry have worked with Tony to ensure the football and fitness training dovetail….and yet they have a pre-season friendly at Wrexham where they are leggy and overtrained! Great joined-up thinking that! Just one example of the MM nonsense which would be comical if it wasn’t so serious!

I don’t whinge because it’s fashionable to whinge nor because I whinge at everything. I am concerned and I hope I give reason for that concern.

If you and others disagree and think that Mick talks sense or that he’s misunderstood or that there is a masterplan he’s working to, fine let’s have a debate but I won’t deny your right to be positive if you won’t deny my right to moan when I believe it’s justified.

Forget about the Wrexham result - we played 2 teams. We beat Villa a few years ago and it means nothing.

The midfield of Kightly, Jarvis, Mark Davies and David Jones has great potential and creativity. Good solid tackler to add and we are laughing. Probably wont be many who agree but I still rate Savage, and think he would be just what we need.

I have to say Im not too sure about Iwelumo, I believe the best signing for the front line would have been Nugent for 3m or so from Pompey. Bigger money but worth a gamble I think, similar to Beattie at Sheff U…

I would personally rather see Henry at CB than Ward or Collins, at least he gets stuck in, but hopefully MM will bring in one more before the season starts

Again a tragic lack of ambition from the board… what’s £500,000 nowadays? Especially with our “alledged” £30 million.

I know, how about Floyd Street, Micheal Gilkes and Mark Atkins to sure up the back if your not willing to spend a measley 500K… muppet mick!

there are are so many fans not seeing the whole picture. One of the best managers that ever lived in Mr Clough, built his team from the back first, Shilton, Pearce etc then had quality in midfield. MM has decided to reverse that and start from the front. Never seen a winning formula without pace in majority of positions on the pitch. Still in MM we trust to be an average team next this season.

In my humble opinion, the players we have signed so far are good but we are still in need of a few more to compete. I dont think Darren Ward is to bad a player if put in the right centre half pairing ie alongside Stearman as Craddock would be great alongside him but what happens if Stearman gets injured we are lumbered with Ward and Craddock who arnt good enough together, last season showed us that, we need depth in our squad in all areas, we dont have that except for Strikers. If Seyi goes we will be void of physical presence in midfield, we have plenty of width now I think. Sign Berra and either Marvin Elliott from Bristol City or Bodde from Swansea and we are in business.

Another key element for me is to keep Neil Collins as far away for the first team as possible.

80 - Levante are based in Valencia not Benidorm (they are the region’s second club - far inferior to a neighbouring team who often play in goldeny orange colours). Sound familar Tesco relegation fodder?

Our midfiled was the problem last season considerin’ Jarvis and Kightly wasn;t in it for massive part of the season with them in the midfield Im shure it will look alot more mobile don’t you?

I’d say we need another midfileder but looks like M. Davies maybe back in the frame… well I hope he is

I knew it was just a stunt. Just watch, most of the transfer listed ones, all Mad Micks favourites, will be back “fighting for a place”.

We don’t have a reserve side this season, and we’ve never had so many players. The turnip head is out of control!

I worry about my wife going out shopping, but McCarthy can shop till he drops!

molly (70)as all the answers all the other championship teams are building better squads than wolves, who exactly apart from the teams with para payments.,players were over trained to play wrexham, dont you understand what pre season is for its to be ready when the season starts not to be ready 2 weeks in to pre season.Molly you moan all you want fella and feel justified, ill watch mm build a stronger squad than what we had last year and will reserve judgement until the season is at least 10 games old.

The argument about Mick ignores a basic fact: Wolves don’t have one manager but two–Dr Merlin and Mr Muppet. Both sides are right!

Dr Merlin was able to take Ireland to the last sixteen of the 2002 Korea/Japan World Cup even without Roy Keane. Mr Muppet gave the fight with Roy Keane precedence over Dr Merlin’s aim to get to the WC quarter-finals, or even further.

Dr Merlin ran away with the Championship in 2004-05, making Sunderland convincing champions. Mr Muppet got them relegated the next year with a record low number of points.

Last season Mr Muppet’s fight with Freddy Eastwood took precedence over Dr Merlin’s need for more points and goals to make the play-offs.

Already this season Mr Muppet’s fight with Gary Breen has taken precedence over Dr Merlin’s need for mentors for our younger players.

The possibility that Dr Merlin can repeat his 2004-05 Championship success in 2008-09 is real.

Who will we see this season? The flying Dr Merlin or the self-destructive Mr Muppet?

If it’s Mr Muppet, after Roy Keane in 2002 and Freddy Eastwood and Gary Breen during this off-season, who will be sent to Coventry next?

Wolves fans want to see Dr Merlin on his magic broom this season. We’ve had enough of the self-destructive (and perhaps Wolves damaging) Mr Muppet.

We never want to see Mr Muppet again. Come on, Dr Merlin, get on a roll!

  93. southbank barmy army said:

NIPPY..LMAO I’D MUCH PREFER TO SEE DR MERLIN & MR MUPPET PUT ON A TANDEM AND SENT BACK UP NORTH.

PERHAPS THEN WE COULD FIND A DECENT MANAGER..LIKE CHRIS COLEMAN..HE KNOWS QUALITY WHEN HE SEES IT.

  94. Eddie Wolf said:

I am SOOO surprised you said Chris Coleman Southbank. I wonder why??? Havent you given that on up yet? The blokes gone, mate, face facts!

Mick needs to move on quickly from Berra and Shackell. I would look at Sonko or Shittu. Both would do really well for us.

Its time to put our money where our mouth is and buy a top class defender worth maybe £2m+. We don’t want bargains at the back, we want solid dependable centre backs that will protect our Hennessey. We can’t rely on our goalkeeper to bail us out. We’re just lucky to have one of the best young goalies in Europe. He might not be with us forever too.

anyone else noticed that ever since moxey left stoke….every year they have improved and shown ambition…and suprise suprise…look where they are now…they had berger diao hendrie all experienced prem players to help them last yr…look what we had!!!

  97. Bridget & Tony said:

53 Gunter is the same as Berra and Shackell - “smoke and mirrors” - No real intent to get anyone that will cost the club too much

We are living in Moxey’s plastic bubble of low wages and cheap and cheerfull - Why? Simple, Moxey must be on a bonus for meeting budget targets and not spending

Eastwood out for £1.2m and Chris whathisname in for £400k; so there will be no complaints from Morgan regarding the loss of £300k on Eastwood sale

Someone should have a word with Morgan and ask him to speak with Sir Alan Michael Sugar about “running a football club like a business”
Even a really successfull businessman like Sir Alan knows that is doesnt work if you want to build a successful Prem team; that’s why he gave up trying with Spurs

Under Moxey we are always going to have this inconsistancy with the team; we skimp on the really important parts of the team (defence) and hope for the best - makes no sense whatsoever!

Some idiots on here go on about the 19 games without conceeding - that was achieved by a 8 man defence - end result lack of creativity, not enough goals, and very boring!

Whats the point of having wingers and playing so deep??? Why? because our centre halfs have very little pace! If the club doesnt want to buy better centre halfs why not loan a couple from Prem clubs or abroad - surely there are youngsters out there better than the likes of D Ward N Collins etc???

It doesnt surprise us that we couldnt score against non league Wrexham - How many did Blouse score last night in a “meaningless” friendly???

If we play the usual 8 man defence - as last season we will end up failing again - we are starting to believe Accountant Wolf’s remarks about the club - Pennywise - Pound Foolish!
Moxey is becoming richer each season he is here and some people give this guy respect for what he has done for the club???

Are we really aiming for the Prem or are we just “ticking” along in the fizzy pop Championship and hoping that maybe - just maybe we make the play offs this season or next?
