Saddlers trialists get new chance

Walsall boss Jimmy Mullen will give his trialists another chance to impress before deciding whether they have a long-term future at the Banks’s Stadium.

Saddlers featured five hopefuls bidding to win contracts during Saturday’s 3-0 friendly victory at Hednesford Town during which the manager fielded a different side in each half.

The trialists – Marco Reich, Chris Palmer, George Ba, Stephen Cooke and Anthony Grant – have all spent the last week training with the club.

But Mullen insisted it would be unfair to judge them after one half and will give them another 45 minutes in tomorrow’s friendly at Worcester when he again plans to make 11 changes at half-time.

“We can’t make a decision after 45 minutes, that’s for sure,” he said. “We’ve got a different kind of game on Tuesday at Worcesterand it’s another game for us to have a look at them.”

Ivory Coast-born striker Ba, 29, has played in France and Israel and ended last season with Gillingham before being released.

Reich is the most high-profile of the five with the 30-year-old German having had spells with Derby and Crystal Palace. He won his only German cap in 1999.

Palmer, 24, started off at Derby and moved on to Notts County before joining Wycombe Wanderers.

Grant, 21 last month, was with Chelsea and made his debut in 2005 as a substitute against Manchester United. He has had loans at Oldham, Wycombe, Luton and Southend and represented England at under-16, 17 and 19 level.

Walsall-born Cooke started his career with Villa before moving on to Bournemouth.
