The sun shone down on crowds who made their way to Wolverhampton’s West Park for the second day of the City Show.

Up to 75,000 people visited the two-day show to enjoy a packed programme of spectacular entertainment. Organisers said it was their best year yet, with storeholders reporting record takings.

After weeks of disappointing weather, families were finally able to bask in glorious sunshine as they watched a host of events in the main area including a daredevil car-crushing stunt by two monster trucks.

Away from the action children rode funfair rides, had their faces painted and petted farm animals in the many different show sections.

Among them were seven-year-old Bailey Irving who got up close to one of the goats.

Bailey’s step-father Chris Sparrow, a custody officer from Delamere Road, Willenhall, said the family had enjoyed a great day out.“It has been brilliant, the kids have loved it, We are really impressed,” the 53-year-old said.

And the families who flocked to the showground were not the only ones with smiles on their faces. Exhibitors and stallholders were pleased with the success of this year’s event.

Butcher John Callinswood, from Poxon’s In Windmill Lane, Castlecroft, was teaching visitors how to make the perfect pork pie in the Wolverhampton and District Butchers’ marquee.

He said: “It has been absolutely tremendous, we have been coming here for the past eight years and this has been our best ever.”

Event spokesman Mark Blackstock said organisers were pleased with the success of the show.

“It has been brilliant, “ he said “The crowds have been fantastic and we have been lucky with the weather.”

The show culminated with a death-defying drop by the Black Knights, the Royal Artillery Parachute Display Team, the team was met with a salute from Compton pensioner Joe Davies who was asked to represent the Mayor Councillor Christine Mills.
