Centre to promote active ageing

wd2894615fifty-stafford-p.jpgMore than 50 people turned out to welcome the launch of a new centre aimed at keeping older people active in Stafford.

The day centre for over-50s is the first of six new Active Ageing Centres being launched in the Stafford area.

Based at The Amasal Club on St Albans Road Industrial Estate, sessions will be taking place every Thursday from 11am to 1.30pm.

Age Concern Stafford and District has set the centre up with part funding from Stafford and Surrounds Locality Commissioning Group, part of South Staffordshire Primary Care Trust.

The trust has made a grant of just under £10,000 to set up six centres in the Stafford area.

A “taster day” was held offering activities for the over-50s.

Entertainment included bingo, darts, dominoes, board and computer games, arts and crafts, crown green bowling and short walks.

Staff and volunteers from Age Concern were on hand at the event to provide information, advice, guidance – and lunch.

Age Concern deputy chief executive Alison Montgomery said details of the next Active Ageing Centre to open in the area would be announced shortly.

She said: “It is very important that we are able to offer new services as an organisation, and that those services appeal to a wide range of ages and abilities. We believe that our new centres will offer something for everyone and we would be delighted to welcome anyone who would like to come along.”

Steve Powell, chairman of Stafford and Surrounds Locality Commissioning Group, said: “We are delighted to be funding this project.

“The centres will help to improve the health and well-being of the 50-plus age group, reducing the risk of poor health and disease, helping people to remain active and independent and improving their life expectancy.”
