Baggies coach is big boost for Tony

mowbrayt8.jpgAlbion boss Tony Mowbray today hailed the ‘visionary’ appointment of a technical director that he says has helped him cope with the summer.

Mowbray says the presence of sporting and technical director Dan Ashworth at The Hawthorns has helped him relax ahead of the return to the Premier League.

The Baggies manager expected to be snowed under with phonecalls about transfers during the close season but he says Ashworth, who replaced Simon Hunt in November, has shared the burden.

“The chairman’s appointment of a technical director has been huge help for me and the difference between last summer and this summer has been marked from my point of view,” said Mowbray.

“I have spent some time with my family as opposed to last season when I spent time with my family but was always on the phone somewhere in the garden or in the hall. Dan Ashworth has taken a lot of that burden this summer and that has been good for me.

“The chairman has been visionary and it’s been good having a technical director that works in between us so that I’m not constantly on the phone. I just get on with my football job.”

Mowbray will jet to Holland with his players tomorrow for their pre-season tour, leaving Ashworth to continue chasing the transfer targets that Mowbray has agreed with the board.

The manager has named a 23-man squad for the trip with injured duo Filipe Teixeira and Shelton Martis missing along with new signing Gianni Zuiverloon, who links up with the Dutch Olympics squad next week.

Tour squad: Kiely, Danek, Daniels, Hoefkens, Robinson, Barnett, Clement, Hodgkiss, Tininho, Pele, Koren, Greening, Kim, Worrall, Morrison, Brunt, MacDonald, Dorrans, Bednar, Miller, Moore, Beattie, Slusarski.
