Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has revealed some of his transfer-listed players could be left behind in his pre-season plans.
With Freddy Eastwood undergoing a medical at Coventry today, McCarthy is gradually changing the face of his squad as they prepare for their first friendly at Wrexham tomorrow.
Injured keepers Wayne Hennessey and Matt Murray are out and McCarthy hasn’t included Seyi Olofinjana.
The transfer-listed Nigerian international won’t report back until July 21 after being given extra time off following World Cup qualifying action.
The Molineux chief still intends to take a 22-man squad to the Racecourse Ground.
But the factor is that with new signings Sam Vokes, Richard Stearman and David Jones to accommodate, Wolves have 34 professionals.
That means some of those on the list – Darren Ward, Rob Edwards, Darren Potter, Jay Bothroyd and Stephen Elliott – will have to be squeezed out.
McCarthy said: “I’ll be taking 22 players tomorrow and some of the transfer-listed ones will be left behind.
“Perhaps I will consider them. There will be other games and they’re all still players at this football club. My view on that is I’d play the players who I know are going to be here first and foremost.”
McCarthy admits there has been interest in the listed players but no one was close to leaving.
Leeds have been linked with Bothroyd and Elliott, Blackpool with Edwards and Southampton with Potter. Elliott and Potter were offered to Burnley as part of the unsuccessful bid for Kyle Lafferty.
He said: “There are a few things spinning around but nothing certain. There has been interest – we have had phone calls about all of them but everyone’s trying to do their business.
“Everyone, just like me, will be phoning about loads of players because if you target just one and it doesn’t happen, then where does that leave you?
“They all ring up to get all the information. They ask the availability, how much does he earn and what’s he got left on his contract.”
Hennessey is named in the squad for Wrexham but has been all but ruled out.
Wolves squad: Ikeme, Hennessey; Foley, Little, D Ward, Collins, Stearman, Craddock, Elokobi, Gray, Daniel Jones; Kightly, Bennett, Collins, David Jones, Davies, D Edwards, S Ward, Jarvis; Keogh, Ebanks-Blake, Vokes, Elliott.

You could take 100 pro’s but we still wouldn’t be any good. its MM that needs leaving behind
Is this MM once again playing the “favourites” card ??
I seem to recall last year he said he would only be playing such and such - and others wouldn’t be playing - only for it all to come crashing down around him.
Why not just keep quiet and let your actions speak for you ? If he takes 22 players then fine - but why say the others arn’t wanted ?? They may be on the transfer list but if you get injuries like last time then he may need these players - and will they want to play for him ??
Ask freddy….
I wish he would leave Stephen Ward and Neil Collins behind, but somehow its just not going to happen.
the season hasnt started and wolves reedy is moaning get behind the team or even better just get lost its fans like you we dont need….IN MICK WE BELIEVE
Neil Collins, the future of Wolves! No chance our Division 2 standard defender will get left behind i’m afraid. MM has made some quality signings but his misplaced loyalty to players who put a shift in beggars belief! I’m crap at playing football but for a grand a week i’d move heaven and earth for you Mick!
The South Bank Idiots will be out in force, again. MM can’t do right for doing wrong.
Eastwood has to go and Seyi wants to go, so why include them in the frendlies?
As for the other listed players, why bother - they’re not gonna be at the club much longer (hopefully) so leave them at home.
The only muppets are the Barmy ones in the Jack Harris!!!
UP THE WOLVES!!!!
More cost cutting from Jez Moxey ??
Only sending a 30 seater coach now !!
Does that mean Stephen Elliot will be left behind? ‘Cos I have that niggling feeling that Mick will retract him from the list!
and what about Denes Rosa - our best midfielder and second best striker in the squad last season… Is he still at the club or is he still training with the U12 team at the backyard of some pub nearby?
Team building par excellence!
Let’s hope you don’t need some of those players at some point.
poor man management im afraid…….this close season is starting to get me down…..
Love the negative comments!
You’re supposed to be excited about a new season!!! ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha…..
Will the posters that are moaning and groaning be praising the team when we are up near the top? That is where we will be if Mick picks the right team and gives some of the youngsters a chance. Already our first choice team is a match for anyone in this division and the cover is decent, except for Neill Collins.
Get behind the team. MM made some bad mistakes but I remember not so long ago that a lot of Albion fans were not happy with the Cabbage patch doll… and look at it now!
Maick is the only manager I know whose words speak louder than his actions!!
Lets stop this back-stapping at MM-The season is in the preparation stage and we have already moans and sly remarks at MM- Lets get behind the team we still have signing to make and there is no reason why we should not be positive for the future–I have not and do not agree with keeping certain players but in him we must trust–Lets get going I am just fed up with the weather and can only take so much “No footy”—Come on get behind the LADs PLEASE>
Are all people from Brum as stupid as 13, who said your are a match for anyone in CCC, are you really that stupid do you think that you will win the CCC like the mighty Albion did, no way you are going to do your ussual finish 7/8/9/10 and then mad MM can blame idiots like you.
Its a chuffin friendly, why take tranferlisted players, what if one got injured! Derrrr.
And HB re. keep quiet, he has been asked the question by E & S and given an answer, logical really, unless your a stirrer?
I dont even get your injury question when we have a 35 man squad??
Talking nonsense the Happy Baggie way, in style, oh yes, aye, boing!
Losers.
Again Thick Mick is making stupid comments to the press. Again this sort of this should stay within the club. Again everytime this guy speaks some players within the squad will have their morale dropped.
Again he will let us down.
why do albion fans come on here i wish they would all just pick up their egos and go, there isnt enough room in the west midlands for there egos alone, we will see whos smilling when wolves go up and albion come down with the LOWEST POINTS TOTAL EVER RECORDED.
one point every albion fan r claiming themeselves the mighty albion, my point is how many points did you go up with ha, the lowest any team has gone up with.
Love all these people who say people who write comments are not real fans. Un fortunately the fact we have 34 players and we have signed another 3 that are cheap and cheerful not young and hungry means there people dont excited so much. I will be there singing and supporting the team home and a lot away this season but i think MM purchases and the clubs attitude to recruitment is bizzare. Why would we need to buy so many strikers for example, fact, we never created enough chances for them to score last year. The other is the mentality to give Neil Collins an extension when he can’t pass the ball fact.
Baggy 1 not sure what you are getting too excited about but at least we will be at the top of the div not like you boys who will be straight back down. Have you got anyone in your team who can score a goal or two now that Phillips has taken the money and run? I can’t see you scoring enough goals next season to stay up, so enjoy losing every week while we pas you by next season on the way up! Wolves on and on…
9. good comment, a player worth a start after a good season in the reserves. But lets not forget whos the manager, he couldnt run a bath.
what is with the small majority of wolves fns that hate mick, i bet these re the people who sit in the south bank and worship someone who scores four goals in 35 games.
two years ago these planks wouldnt have even bothered have come to the molineux to watch the mighty wolves because they belived relegtion was loomin, i would love to see these so called fans or mick haters to do what mick has done in more than two years,
finacialy stable
young team looking at premire football, good foundation.
two reasonable finishes (first season we did overacheive then too much expectation for the second )
but if we fail (which we wont) i will gladly eat my words.
OUT OF THE DARKNESS COMETH THE MCARTHY
i have just heard his comments on mark davies & am appalled.the sooner mccarthy leaves our club the better & the fat controller can go with him, because we have no chance of going up under mccarthy & we will lose all our best players because of this & now there is no paul ince to turn to.
the nuggets on here who constantly slag off the south bank are obviously the armchair supporters. Just shut up!
Hope MIck just uses a bit of common sense this season and wat he really does need to leave behind is the favouritism that plagued us last season…
Please mick u showed us in your first season that u can do it…..
Just Do it mick
OUT OF DARKNESS COMETH LIGHT
Again Mick makes any sort of statement and the Mick haters sieze any possible oppurtunity.
24 - Has it not occured to you that Davies hasn’t played any football for two seasons? He needs to get some matches under his belt.
9 - Denes Rosa was not and is not the best midfielder at the club, playing well in the reserves is not the same as first team football. Just look at Leon Clarke.
The level of gibbonry on these boards is once again staggering.
This article can be translated in one sentence…”I’m still gonna play me favourites!!”
Lewis Gobern still injured??? How long has he been injured for, and what exactly is wrong with him???
superstardjwolves- let me guess your part of the hat mick southbank army arnt you and you just dont like the fact. im a season ticket holder in the southbank and i had 4 fight last seson with other wolves telling me i cant have my own oppinon.
freddy is having a medical at coventry this afternoon its on the wolves website.
I must agree with happie Baggie. Mick keeps on saying things he doesn’t have to and it is really damaging to team spirit.
Several of the listed players have said they want to try and work their way back into the club and Mick agreed they have the right but now he’s saying to them that he will use them only when he’s desperate.
He really should not talk about his players in such a way. Ever heared the top managers talk in such terms about their players. Mick should simply have not taken them and it would not have been worthy of a news item.
SUPER MICK
SUPER MICK
SUPER MICK
SUPER MICK MCCARTHY
If we sell Eastwood for £1million and Olofinjana for£3mill it will be very interesting to see how much of that is spent before 31st August.I fear the worst. IE not much quality coming in and few players shipped out. What the fans need to be told whether this is because MM feels we have a strong enough squad or whether Moxey is not prepared to pay the going rate in transfer fees and wages.I suspect it is the latter.
does all this negative comments help. the season hasnt even started yet. yes last season was bad but thats in the past. give the lads and mick 1 more chance. cmon wolves
WHAT A JOKE,I WILL GIVE MICK A CHANCE THIS SEASON BUT IF WERE NOT DOING WELL I WILL BE DOING WHAT ALL YOU PLONKERS WILL BE DOING AND THAT IS CHANTING FOR HIM TO GET THE SACK.HES HAD 2 YEARS AT THE CLUB AND DONE WELL IN THE 1ST.LAST SEASON WAS A JOKE AND WE ALL COULD SEE IT OTHER THAN MICK
Irish Smurf
a) you cant spell, try constructing a sentence together which makes some sense.
b) Fighting at the moli, you ought to be ashamed of yourself. You are a disgrace!
Why is MM not taking these players and keeping them match preped? Are they not being paid anymore by Wolves? when the season starts if the right offer is not in, will the likes of Olofinjana not be used or not even on the team bus? These wantaways and transfer listed players still need to be encouraged to play well if they pull a shirt on.
Morale…Mick.. It’s called Morale
superstardjwolves- i am ashamed why am i ashamed, because stupid little idiots come to football matches thinkin they are gonna get a fight with another fan from the other team, yes i was fightin, y becuase i was with my son when the bloke i hd an argument with through his pint at me the kid was 19, and thought he was a hard man so i put him ryte, no b4 you tell me i should be ashmed of myself look at you negative and pathetic comments, all i wrote was my oppion you took it to heart.
well he,s off to coventry,,me down to bet freds to put £10 on him being leading scorer in 2008 2009 also to defo score againest us.well tats life, the mm way.how many of our new signings? this time next year, will still be with us.iwonder???????
I think we ought to help the south bak out with a new song now their darling freddy is off
How about
Denes
Denes
Denes
Has a ring to it & it’s easy for them to sing
To be honest with Freddy… I dont think he will be a big hit at Coventry, Ive got a feeling that they are going down…
Think the yong uns will play tomorrow.
Dan Jones, Mark Little, Ste Gleeson, Liam Hughes, Sam Vokes, Lee Collins, Mark Davies…
Cant see him playing many of the bigger names…
I think coventry will do well this season ive a sneaky feeling they will make the play offs. i’d like to see vokes start tomorrow and stearman.
What man management talents this clown has got! NOT!
How do the other players feel after that moronic statement?
23. irish smurf
Associating McCarthy with the Wolverhampton motto is insulting to real Wolves fans. That sort of honour has to be earned, and except for a lot of blarney the Thick Mick hasn’t earned his stripes yet.
Mr Bojangles what big names? same old dingles allways moaning and looking up to the baggie boys.
Mark Davies is going to be off on loan next year to a lower league team. I would be surprised if we saw him in a Wolves shirt before January
Seems to be a lot of criticism of the south bank today.thing is without them the molineux would be as quiet as a library!
Such stupidity from one man, he collects it as he wanders aimlessly around life, just making it up as he goes along.
Remember, in the 1990 World Cup when Gary Lineker scored against Ireland - appropriately enough it was Mick McCarthy who kicked Lineker into the net after he’d scored.
We are talking about somebody that the Irish fans referred to as “turnip head”. Sounds good to me, so from now he’s turnip head! It should make him feel more at home, after all…
weston wolf-my brother has just brought a caravan at brean and wants to know if there is a wolves supporters club there or if he can travel with anyone to home matches.
Help appreciated. Ta
Need another quality centre half and a goalscorer in that order, in fact with the departure of Freddy the latter has become more of a priority now. If we don’t do this with the great strength of the division this year I fear we are looking at finishing just barely in the top half of the league.
The sale of Freddie Eastwood for a rumoured £1.2m; D Ward we purchased last season for £250k and cant get rid of - How many other MM “shift putters” do we have that we cant get rid of, and who chose them exactly? Just in the two above we have made a loss of £500k min and that doesnt include several other players who are still on the wage bill with contracts of 2 to 3 years??? Wonder how much that will impress Steve Morgan when he realises it???
Wonder how quickly good ol Jez will take to distance himself from MM when the grapes start to turn sour??? 0- 60 less than 6 secs???
51. Stoke Wolves
Can’t ague with your assessment of our current team quality.
Those teams that came down have not sold wildly, and they have Premiership quality. Then there is the other 5 that beat us to the playoffs. That makes 8 teams potentially better than us.
There are some good managers in those teams, and as last season so many managers in the Championship outmaneuvered McCarthy with tactics, it is hard to see where we are going to get our wins next season.
baggy1-you should know as you are number 1-prize village idiot, mighty albion-is that the same “mighty” albion that took 88 years to win a title! go back to sleep and wake up in 2096 just in time to see the “mighty” albion win another.
54. Yes but your bid to win a title is still on going!! It has now been 0 years since we won a title!!!
CHAMPIONS….
Andy Mutch - I wish it would be quiet rather than booing your own team. Disgraceful. We’re not on Big Brother.
we lost a pre-season game, now “mick doesnt like friendlies, they mean nothing and are just a means to an end”
sounds a lot like wen we were down in 10th “i dont look at the table it means nothing..”
and Iwelumo ? “I dont need 20+strikers, they dont mean anything, its all about getting behind the ball and defending”
The pillock will be out by December.
We played two teams and non of them could score against a non league side - Where is the pride and passion and how many did we miss???
Yes, it was a friendly but two teams went out and failed to score or take their chances!
Instead of adding 11,000 seats for spectators. Morgan must be thinking of having a 22 man bench on the grounds for the players we can’t sell but MM might use.
