Joy at failing college’s turnaround

A Black Country college which was heavily criticised by Government inspectors in a report just over a year ago has dramatically transformed its fortunes according to the latest review.

Bosses at Dudley College, which has seen a change at the helm since last February’s damning report, say they are delighted by the latest report which has awarded them the second highest rating of ‘good’. They were previously labelled ‘inadequate’ – the lowest rating available.

The report criticised leadership and management at the college as well as below average achievement and standards.

Following its release, principal Jeanne Harding quit to be replaced by Lowell Williams, who previously led South Leicestershire College.

The latest report, published today, follows a re-inspection by Ofsted in May which saw a 20 strong team observe more than 120 lectures and speak to employees, parents and students.

Principal Lowell Williams said: “To turn around the college in just 15 months is a remarkable achievement and I’m not aware of anywhere else that has gone from inadequate to good in such a short space of time.

“We have turned it around by working as a team from the top down to the bottom up and setting realistic but challenging targets.

“Staff at the college were hurt by the last inspection and they have really pulled together as a group to make this turn around possible.”

The latest inspection report has rated every area as good apart from achievement and standards and ICT which have been classed as satisfactory. The report states: “The college has made good progress. The previously inadequate provision in business, administration and law, health, public services and care is now good. Standards of teaching and learning are good and the range of approaches used is effective.”

The report’s findings comes just days after plans for a £100 million new college on two sites in Dudley town centre and Brierley Hill were announced.
