Stephen Ward admits he may not be thought of as a striker anymore – but is prepared to be cast out wide again at Wolves.
The 22-year-old Irishman arrived from Bohemians as a forward but has frequently occupied the wide left berth, as his record of three goals in 47 League games suggests.
Boss Mick McCarthy intends to sign another striker before the transfer window shuts.
The chances of Ward breaking back into the attack look slim. Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, Andy Keogh and Sam Vokes are all vying for places.
That is not to mention transfer-listed trio Freddy Eastwood, Jay Bothroyd and Stephen Elliott.
Ward said: “I’m not sure if I’m thought of as a striker anymore and to be honest I’m happy to play anywhere.
“I just want to play as many games as possible and hopefully I’ll be pushing for a place and at least being in and around the squad.
“I have no problem playing left wing, left back or wherever I’m called upon.
“The gaffer is so good and honest with us, I think we’d all play anywhere if asked.
“It’s a fresh start for everyone when you look ahead to the new season.”
Ward is just relieved to be in contention after missing the run-in with a knee injury.
He said: “I know I’ll be fighting for a place. I’m just glad to be back from the injury and will give it my best shot during pre-season.”
