Mowbray explains Phillips deal

mowbray2.jpegAlbion boss Tony Mowbray has promised fans exciting new signings - as promotion talisman Kevin Phillips completed his exit from The Hawthorns.

The veteran striker signed a two-year deal with Birmingham, with Albion revealing details of their own contract offer on the table in their bid to keep him at the club.

It comprised a first year up front with a second season based on appearances, with Phillips only needing to make 19 appearances (including substitute appearances) to activate the second year.

Mowbray remained adamant throughout that a straight two-year deal for a man of Phillips’ age and recent history of knee problems was too big a risk.

He was sticking by his guns today.

He said: “We made Kevin a very substantial financial offer for the next two years but in my opinion the second year had to be earned.

“Kevin’s advisors were adamant they wanted a straight two-year contract. As that was the sticking point, I have no problem with the outcome.

“I am happy that as a club we made a fair and realistic offer to Kevin and I’m obviously disappointed he has chosen not to accept it.

“I have had a couple of very amicable conversations with Kevin in the past two days. Now that he has made his decision, I would like to thank him for his goals and contribution over the past two seasons.

“He is a top professional and has been a pleasure to work with. We all wish him well.”

Nonetheless, Mowbray remains upbeat, despite losing all three of the promotion-winners who were out of contract this summer.

He said: “We should look forward to some new exciting players coming here. I remain very positive. This time last year we lost some very influential
players but went on to win promotion and reach the FA Cup semi-finals.”

I also would like to thank KP for the last two seasons - so many goals, so many great games - he has been fantastic for us…. but TM is bang on - he should have been prepared to earn his 2nd year.

I believe his leaving had nothing to do with the two year, activation clauses etc… blues simply offered more money for the next two seasons than we did - and i agree that we went as far as we should.

Anyway - I can’t wait to see who TM has lined up - we will miss KP, but as usual I’m sure his replacement will be even better.

The king is dead - long live the king.

If that was the deal on the table i am surprised Kev chose to leave. It maybe shows a lack of confidence in his ability to hold down a place next season or being injury free. Having now seen the details of the contract on offer i fully support the stance of the club.

Good luck to him, at his age its a good idea to drop back to the championship

  6. terryCLOONYbaggie said:

well done tony sticking to your guns,im sure you will find a more than an adequate replacement,
personally i dont think he will be as big a hit at blues cuz i dont think they got the same calibre of players as we, aye boing boing

  7. paula said:

We all wish Kev the best after deciding to leave us. Think that the deal the baggies offered was realistic due to his age, however, we all know that even if not starting matches, he would be the one person who would come on as a sub and score. Kev has a lot to offer Blue ‘intelligence’, and blues players will learn a lot from hime. So good luck to Kev, we’ll miss him.

    Thanks for the memories KP.
you have obviously decided that the championship offers a better chance of reqular place in team which i donot think he would have got at ALBION
Trust in TM he knows what he is doing.

I think Kev is being realistic, the premiership is too much for him. I think he made the right choice both for the club and him personally.
Good Luck Kev we will miss you!

Good luck KEV ,disapointed he didnt take our offer and just 17 games including subs, when this season we can have 7 on bench would have given him the second year.Well at least we can enjoy him scoring at the custard bowl this season.

Whilst i am keen to see who TM has lined up - I am also really excited by the prospect of Miller and Moore in the prem. Luke Moore will definately come good for us and with a pre season under his belt will be a different player. I think his nippy pace combined with Big Ish powering through will be a fantastic partnership.

Bednar also missed pre season last year and he will be a great impact player for us too…. in fact its hard to see where a new forward will fit in.

Sadly this was inevitable when Blues offered the two year deal.

But thanks for the memories Kevin. Some great games, tremendous goals, and the magical Championship win at Loftus Road when Baggies fans dedicated it as a ‘Super Kevin Phillips’ tribute day.

We’ll miss you and you’ll be hard to replace.

Good luck to KP. Its seems he just wants to get his slippers on and under the table at the Blues. Don’t think he could cout it in the Prem again anyway, he did nothing at Villa.

I’m so so excited by TM as gaffer. This man thinks of the club and the club only.
BRobson would’ve given him a three yr deal!!!

In fairness to TM he offered a v good deal and he knows it will come back on him if we don’t find a suitable replacement.

Good luck kev, stay injury free and bang them goals in….

Anyone else havin a pop on him for LG??????

i remember a random wolves fan who visited our forum for just one day once trying to attack KP whilst attacking his own club for a poor run.
It was along the lines of it doesnt matter about us anymore, we’ll be playing aginst him next season anyway….well you weren’t half right mate!!

  16. Stourbaggie said:

You can only assume that KP,s advisors are not sure how bad his knees are 19 games does not seem many to play in a season, so much for a desire to have one last chance in the money grabbers league

  17. themowbrayway said:

Mowbary’s got his head screwed on and his constant press updates about the situation have gone down well with fans. One poster above has mentioned that it was the money that swung it, but it should be very clear that it is the length of the contract that was the sticking point. It will be hard for Phillips to repeat his golascoring feats of the last 2 seasons, because Blues don’t play the same kind of football that suited him. Gera, Phillips, Koumas, Kamara and Davies have all chosen to leave Albion while playing well with Mowbray at the helm. I think that shows that Mowbray is his own man, is tough, does not bow to star players and will basically do things the way he feels fit, regardless of the name of the player. Top bloke, top manager. I’m so much looking forward to see who he brings in and watching his team take on the prem.

  18. bilston baggie said:

i think its a blessing in disguise that kev has gone yes he has been brilliant for us and that has earned him a good contract at blues and i hope he does well but we save hes wages and lets be honest with the best will in the world he was only going to be back up in the prem i would rather pay wages to someone with a relistic change of playing regular football

  19. Mr Rose said:

Yes i agree in was about money and not the length of the deal.
If baggies have had offered the same money as blues he would have stayed and would have made 19 apps for the club and scored goals.
Anyway good luck to him at blues and thanks for helping us get up.

    Boing Boing.

I can’t help feeling disappointed with both the club and Kev over this. I would have fought harder to keep him, but then again what do I know! I’m sure TM will get someone good in, I just fear that we wont be able to afford a younger striker with Kevs technical ability and brain.

  21. Happy_baggie said:

17 - albion effectively offered him a two year deal - there was just a very basic condition attached which the player should have been able to activate quite easily.

So if there were two, 2 year deals on offer - one from a prem club and one in the CCC - it must have come down to hard cash in the end for him to go to the CCC.

Blues will be desperate for a proven CCC goalscorer to get them up - and probably would have bettered ANY offer we made.

  22. Doghouse Dave said:

Fantastic manager and what a diplomat. Very refreshing to see a manager who is not dropping hints that he is not being backed by his chairman. He will go a long long way! You never know, as a few people are starting to realize that his playing style can be a winner, they may start copying his man management style and some sanity may return to this crazy game!

wolves fan here, thought we saw the back of super kev. If i was a baagies fan I’d think TM was right in the offer made to Kev, but worried about whether you will be able to attract a quality replacement for him. Amoebi doesnt score enough goals for me.

  24. Happy_baggie said:

Dave - we already have that player in luke Moore - trust me… he will be a big hit this season !!

What I really like is the way we are quietly building a great club - we have brought in Dan Harris from the Blues as fitness coach plus Peter Grant (who i really rate) as first team coach. Add those to our current fantastic staff and we are in great shape off the pitch.

On the pitch we have signed up all the loanees TM wanted PLUS a great young prospect from Holland - and who knows who else is to follow.

All this without the big investor everyone says we need (and who knows what will happen there…) - I am starting to feel really confident now for the coming season.

    Bring on the arsenal !!!

I just hope the link with Ameobi has no truth!!

Well done to TM and JP for their stance. Though i’m grateful to Kevin Philips for all the terrific performances he’s given the club and a better than a goal every other game average (terrific when you think how much he missed thru injury) credit has to be given to the board and management for sticking to their guns when many would just have given in to KPs demands (eg Robson).

Just praying we can get someone in soonish to replace him

  32. DANGERMOUSE74 said:

Well done KP A great goalscorer at the club for the last 2 years and would have probably scored a few in the prem, but it’s his last pay day and who knows how long his knee will last, I hope he scores a few but not enough to get them up!!

  33. SuperBobbyT said:

Guys, I am worried about this. All our other strikers are unproven at Prem level - potential only. TM doesn’t have the greatest record in signing strikers - MacDonald, Slusarski and Beattie won’t even figure. I think we should have matched the Blues offer and kept him.

  34. bilston baggie said:

i agree with HB i think luke will do well give him a chance TM would not pay good money for him if he did not think hes got wot it takes

it appeares the general opinion is thanks for the good times kev and good luck, i feel that with the way football is the move was inevitable. yes kev has been brilliant and we love him to bits, but surely surley he could have had a good crack in the prem??? in those cold winter nights when blues travel to doncaster, blackpool and wolves i wonder if he’ll wonder what could have been… a few extra quid a week is not vital to kev, he’s a legend he’ll always find work. i’m really disappointed, players like kim, dorrans, moore etc could have really learned a lot from him and a possible coaching role in a couple of years. it’s a sad day in football for me but MONEY talks aye. boing boing.

    24) Villa fans were glad to get rid of him. The harsh reality for Wolves and Albion fans is that we don’t pay the wages in comparison to Blues. Why do you think Carsley went there.
When big names are up for grabs we will both struggle to get them in!

  39. Frank said:

I don’t think T M will be staying long at the baggies. If he’s being told that he can’t hold on to players of the quality of Gera,Kumas,Kamara, and Davies, and don’t forget they have all left under his management(and the club can’t use the same excuse as with Philips, none of them being 35 years old )then his own ambitions will be deflated, so if an ambitious club comes along he will be off in my opinion leaving the new member of staff who “coincidentally” is an ex manager of Norwich already in position to take charge.

39, Frank put the beano down, Davis was over-rated and injury-prone and at £8-10M we got a good deal, Gera left to get 5G a week more, Koumas and Kamara were greedy players who tried too hard to take on the entire team and did nothing when they left for the prem, Phillips has just left for more money and the fact he knows he would not cut it in the premiership like when he was at the villa, all in all I think TM and JP have both done very well in transfer dealings and the running of this club, why do you put two and two together to get 7 and think TM is leaving just because we brought in a first team coach, it is stupid ideas like that, that start bigger stupid rumors.

  47. DeeDee said:

I too would like to wish KP all the best and I hope he continues to be a hit at the Blues. He must still be one of the best strikers in the country, regardless of age and he WILL be a big miss. I also trust TM, but my only concern is in the rumours that Ameobi will be his replacement. KP scores goals, Amiobi doesn’t. I would not call that exciting, and that is a REAL worry. I would have preferred to give KP some sort of coaching roll and signed a young, hungry and up and coming striker whom he could have worked with.

  48. Nedball said:

Quote from KP on the Blues official site:

‘Another factor of me coming here is that if I’d stayed at West Brom, I felt I’d have probably spent all the time on the bench and not on the field’

I think that explains a lot, and I think it bodes well for us too. KP’s obviously spoken to Mogga about plans for next season, and he’s expecting quality strikers to come in (that’s what I read into that anyway) so done a runner to carry on playing regular football.

  49. The Real Bully. said:

Haven’t seen you on here before but I notice that you have conveniantly forgotten Bednar and Miller to make your point. McDonald was bought for the future, Slusarski as a squad player and Beattie is in my humble opinion not a bad player but was overtaken by three strikers on tremendous form.
    38 BRW.
I agree with your point. Especially regarding Wolves. You have no parachute payments and your chairman’s company is in trouble due to the state of the economy. As for us. No we’re not up there with the big hitters but KP wasn’t a case of couldn’t afford to keep him as didn’t want him ‘at any cost.’ Lee Carsley is a little too long in the tooth for our manager and wanted to go to the club he supports anyway.
    39 Frank.
Are you the artist formerly known as FranktheGas. If you are, it’s good to see you haven’t lost your sense of joy and optimism.

I wonder whether you need to be too worried. I think without TM’s clever use of KP, he may not play so many games this season.

  50. The Real Bully. said:

    48 Nedball.
Glad to hear that. Sounds as though KP has gone for football reasons not just money, very refreshing. Also TM once again showing his honesty, no wonder players love playing for him. Great man as well as manager.

  51. Happy_baggie said:

Ned - if KP has been honest enough to say that then I (and others) owe him an apology. I thought he had only gone for the money - when perhaps he really is thinking about getting more match time.

However i don’t think the statement means we will be getting a big new name in - I think miller, moore and bednar would all have been in front of KP this season… but I guess we will need a replacement now - clubs need 4 or even 5 fowards now and i think beattie will be gone before we play arsenal too.

Good luck to KP - maybe he has left with his head held high after all.

Happy, I did think that half way through typing my post, but decided that I was going to stay positive. I can see Beattie and Sluzarski both leaving before the start of the season, making way for 2 top strikers to come in…..dunno who though?!

TRB - I agree, he’s got to be the best Manager I’ve ever known at the Albion. Megson did a fantastic job for us, but to gain the success as well as play the style of football we have done over the last 18 months has been amazing to watch!!

I’ve every confidence in his decisions with JP, and we WILL stay up, and grow as a club.

Is anyone going to Kiddy tomorrow? I’m supposed to be putting my Super Kev T shirt to good use whilst laminating (Ggggrrrrrreeeeeat!!), but might have the night off.

  55. Happy_baggie said:

Ned - as i said on another post - it seems that KP may have left for good ol’ football reasons after all - he will get more match time at blues than at albion next season - so fair play to him and well done… my faith is slightly restored.

  56. Nedball said:

55 - Who isn’t going to put the ball in the Dingle net more like?! No centre backs, no midfield general (that definitely includes Karl Henry) and 16 strikers who can’t mustre a goal between em…..all looking good in Wolverhampton City (or let’s stick with WC for short)

Instead of knocking the Express and Dingle, how about a big thank you for the fun they provide? On a sober front, if you were TM with a Chairman that thinks you are better than sliced bread, a youth policy being set up, proper training and medical facilities, a team that won the Championship, would have won the Cup Final but for a cheat that even The Prem has seen fit to reject, idolised by the fans, (you add the rest), why on Earth would you want to move on? Bill Shankly took a poor Second Division team in Liverpool into a world famous club. He had a rough ride at times, but he got there. TM is as good as Shanks in my view.

I’m sad to see KP leave, but now I’ve seen the details of the deal he was offered by The Baggies I’m surprised he chose top leave. He’s been a wonderful servant to the club and was a good role model for youngsters coming into the game. That said, in the begining I was somewhat sceptical of JP’s reluctance to offer a two year contract, and wrote and told him so, it is clear that in the long term ToMo and JP did their upmost within sensible reason to keep super Kev considering his recent medical history. I wish him the very best of luck for the future at The Blues, who in turn have aquired a very good player. As for The Baggies, well, it’s onwards and upwards… We move on.

Whilst I appreciate that KP was invaluable to the Albion last season with his goal scoring ability I feel that all three players who have walked out on the Club over the last few weeks could have shown the Club some respect by signing contracts at the end of last season which would have enabled us to get something back for them in the transfer market.

  69. themowbrayway said:

Happy, I don’t agree. I think it’s clear that Kev has gone for the security of a 2 year deal which will pay out even if he gets injured. I think that’s his and the clubs concern.

  70. Shropshirebaggie said:

At the end of the day, TM’s offer was realistic. At Phillips’ age, he should be prepared to earn his second year. As one person has said previously, if a player is prepared to drop down a division for the sake of a pay rise, then the game is finished.

He’s been a great player for the Albion, but a 2 year deal would have taken him to the age of 37. That’s too old for a premiership player, there are very few players who have succeeded at that age.

The club is in safe hands with JP and TM at the helm and long may it continue.

By his own admission Super Kev could not hack it in the Premier League.
All Kev had to do was perform for Albion this upcoming season and he would have got his second season contract. Kev obviously was not confident with a performance based contract, so he has taken the easier option to remain in the Championship. This really surprises me, I thought Kev would have been up for the Premier League challenge.
Thanks Kev for your wonderful displays for Albion, you will remain a Baggies legend.

Adam, those words cut deep!! I’m ever so sorry, you are right, I have no place commenting on Wulferamptun.

However, it seems as though my words have been backed up on your own boards and you just don’t like the fact that, a 25 year old ’school boy’ knows more about your inept squad than your own manager…..you take care now x

To all the usual suspects from down the road, posting on here about ’sinking ship, blah blah, etc etc.’
JEREMY PEACE. Has not indicated a desire to leave the club. He has re-iterated a willingness to move aside for the goodness of the club if the RIGHT invester comes along.
ZOLTAN GERA. Although an established international, the Albion was his first contract outside his own country. As we all know, we’re not the biggest payers therefore in football terms he’s not made a fortune from the game. At 29 Fulham offered him the chance to secure his families future with a massive contract to match this would have destroyed our wage structure. Something the manager didn’t want to happen, not the chairman.
MARTIN ALBRECHTSON. Gone because the manager could only offer him a place on the bench for most games. We’re not in a position to pay top dollar to players in the reserves.
KEVIN PHILLIPS. Moved on because he wanted to play first team football and we have a manager who is honest enough not to make false promises. I’m sure that KP knew he would get enough games to activate the second year and therefore it seems that this was a media red herring.
Although addressed to Wulfies this is really to those in our own ranks who seek to blame the chairman for everything. Whenever a player leaves it’s JP’s fault. Whenever we sign a player it’s down to the manager. The two of them work as a team. Gera left because of a policy agreed by both of them, TM stated this at the time. KP has not left because JP is tight but because he would rather play than sit on the bench. Zuiverloon has signed because he liked the way the club is run.I don’t have any inside contacts as some claim to have, I rely on reading and listening to what people actually say.
End of sermon but please, please for the sake of the club stop the sniping from within.

Wow, At least 2 Albion fans on here admitting Wolves are a bigger club.
Still im not on here to gloat you that you have lost another of your best players.
I honestly dont believe Blues are a bigger club than albion, you certainly have a bigger trophy cabinet than they do. Again, its all just down to greed. Ive said this before but as good as KP is he has never shown gratitude/respect to former clubs so if you do ever come up against him expect the hand to the ear gesture as he kisses his blues badge.

    80. wolventino. mmmm the name suggests some kind of latin lover. Reality is that you are a sad jealous dingle who has nothing better to do (at 12:15 am) than post a load of rubbish about a team that is far superior to the one you follow (as proved time & time again in recent years).
Maybe you were in between lovers & were just filling in the time?. Then again I doubt it as I would think that you “loved” yourself quite a lot (if you catch my drift!).

Steve Brisco what you talkin about!! TM to leave?? We have got the best english manager in the country, the club is nowhere near in debt like most clubs in the country and we have got some fantastic young players!! we lost koumas kamara davies etc, then we go on to win the league!! u clearly aint got a clue about football mate, we will stay up comfortably next season!!! look at the past managers buckley, little, robson etc what good was they, we play the most exciting and entertaining football i have ever seen up the albion!!!!!!!!!!

I know Tribal football is not the most reliable source for information, but it is reported on there that Paul Robinson has rejected a new contract offer.

If this is in fact true, and i have done a huge disservice to Tribal, then it is hardly a eureka moment is it.

Robinson to Blues to be with his bestest friend
    ?……..Hmm

    80. wolventino. The only pikey deserting the sinking ship is your very own Freddy.
Looking at your name I bet you are a red hot lover….. apparently you practice a lot on your own!.

Right decision by Mowbray & fair play to him for sticking to his guns. KP has been fantastic for you but Mowbray knows what he wants and maybe that extra bit of sharpness needed in the prem was always going to be a stretch for KP, especially over two seasons. Only time will tell but if he breaks down for blues next season I wouldn’t be surprised. It pains me to say it but I think you’ll do alright next season if fans & board hold their nerve and let your manager do the business.

    83. Oddball, apology accepted. If you know more about our team than our manager then what are you still doing in school? Then again you are only 25….time is on your side.

Would some with your undoubted football knowledge let your top striker (proven in the premier) go? Lol.

Going up the mowbray way eh? Going down the megson, robson way me thinks!

Yo yo is the new boing boing.

p.s. thanks for the kiss (makes you look an even bigger plank).

    92. Adam. OK, our yo yo does go up & down. I believe that the string broke on yours when it went down & it now can’t go up. Enjoy your season in the chumpionship, we will enjoy ours in the prem whatever happens.

93…Mr Sheep go back to sleep. You will enjoy your season whatever happens? Typical small club mentality.

Out of all your years in the top flight what have you actually won?

Why not just loan him out for a season, he’ll still do a job for you next year ~ back in the championship.

…day bother with the odd wolves wind up merchant, truth is we’d swap our situation with yours in the blink of an eye. Great squad, Beautiful football and, most importantly a Brilliant manager.

most of us is still reeling from having thick mick for another season - well atleast till December… woop woop
