Headlocks and body slams took over a Black Country working men’s club when a team of wrestlers took to the ring.
Families from across the area flocked to Bushbury Working Men’s Club, in Bushbury Lane, Wolverhampton last night to watch the professionals battle it out and cheer on their favourites.
And this was real British wrestling – the type that used to fill our screens on World of Sport a Saturday afternoon in the 1970s.
The Legend Wrestling League was behind the event and it was its third time at the venue since March since moving from its previous base at Wolverhampton’s Legends club.
Foam hands and T-shirts were aplenty as the 70-strong audience took their seats around the ring.
People of all ages cheered on their favourites to win throughout the night’s five fights.
The atmosphere changed instantly as soon as the music started and the night’s first wrestlers X-Bonez and Kris Navarro bound into the ring.
Seemingly painful moves got screams from the audience and children were going wild shouting insults and cheering on their favourites.
Promoter Matt Reid said: “We have a good following of loyal supporters and all of the lads love doing it.”
Care assistant Sharon Bassett, aged 39 and of Birmingham New Road in Coseley, said: “We’ve been coming along for a while now and it’s a really good family night out.
“We all love it. It’s not to be taken seriously and is something that everyone can enjoy.”
Josephine Zarb, aged 40 and of Cannock Road, Wolverhampton, said: “I love wrestling and we bought T-shirts last time so decided to wear them to come along.”
Her mother Janet Zarb, aged 68 and of Badger Drive, Wolverhampton, said: “I lost my husband Andrew in April and he used to love coming along.
“It’s something we loved doing so me and my daughter still come.”
Katie Foxall, aged 31, was also among those watching with her 11-year-old son Elliot.
She said: “He loves wrestling but this is the first time we’ve actually come along to watch. It’s certainly something different to do.”
The group’s next wrestling event will be at the club on August 12.
