Moxey calling for fans boost

Wolves chief executive Jez MoxeyChief executive Jez Moxey today urged fans to buy into a ‘new Wolves vision’ of entertaining football as he urged fans to snap up seats for the new campaign.

Moxey revealed season ticket sales were around 1,300 down the same time last year, and believes Wolves supporters should tap into the vibrancy of the squad determined to challenge for promotion.

“We’ve sold 14,700 so far which is about 1,300 down on where we were this time last year, based on selling days,” said Moxey.

“But it’s a reflection on the same number we were down on those that didn’t renew on the Early Bird.

“Last year people were renewing based on the fact we had finished in the play-offs. We want to keep the expectations in check, but we can’t wait for the first game of the season.”

Moxey is aware some fans were critical of the quality of football at Molineux last season and believes the players will ‘up’ the entertainment levels.

“We have a young squad that’s so enthusiastic and hopefully we can produce exciting football,” he said.

“We want to entertain our fans and if we do that, the players will enjoy playing and the fans will enjoy watching and hopefully, if that happens, then hopefully success will follow.

“Everyone from the administration staff to the players, fans, manager and media is hoping for a really positive season on all fronts.

“And with Steve Morgan trying to support us with our recruitment aims, there are many reasons to be optimistic.”

Moxey added: “I’m not sure fans have picked up on the enthusiasm there is within Molineux, maybe because people are on holidays or because of Euro 2008. But there is a really big buzz in Molineux about the forthcoming season and that has manifested itself within the squad.

“We are having to almost remind the players to keep a lid on their expectations and excitment for the new season. We think we have signed three excellent players in Sam Vokes, Richard Stearman and David Jones and our player recruitment drive hasn’t finished.”

The reason ticket sales are down is because of the dull, boring football played last season. We can only hope that the message has got across that stuff like that is not acceptable to the fans.

The mood is good and there is plenty of optimism but the quality of football last season was not as good as the back end of the previous season and MM made some strange decisions on the pitch. Before the season has kicked off we will get to 15,000 sales - which is decent in the current climate. Only Villa and the Tesco’s will have more and that is because they are glory hunters and want to see the Man Utd’s and Liverpool’s!

Buy what we need instead of talking to media. At least one decent central defender and an experienced player at defensive midfield to captain the side. Pay the clubs what they want for them is better for the finances than miss out all the time because of trying to “earn” £100000 in the negotiations. Buy the two players we need and both the number of points and fans will increase. Its as simple as that.

Quite right those people mentioning the lack of exciting football, the credit squeeze and ticket prices being too high. In this day and age, people have critical decisions to make regarding how they spend their money. Only the single who have little or no responsibilities can spend their cash on season tickets or travel to distant places for away matches. Married people have families to support and now that the credit squeeze is biting hard and petrol is going through the roof they have to consider if football is a priority or not?
As for ticket prices, football clubs seem to up their prices willy-nilly without any thought if the general public can afford it!
If Wolves want more people to buy tickets, seasons, early-birds or otherwise, they must be realistic and price entrance within range of the public and not the rich Abramovich’s who have no money worries!
Get real Wolves FC and the fans will respond as best they can but expecting them to pay over-the-odds per game and then be expected to enjoy the tripe which was on offer last season yet again will clearly not work!

Wolves fans, we’re nearing the point of now or never. With the effects of the new Sky deal now being realized and with Steve Morgan having taken over the club, we are at destiny’s turning point. After two decades bumbling along at the top of the second tier, it’s now up or down. It’s going to be a close call.

I’m sick of Jez’s annual hype at this time of year. Then he blames the fans who attend for discouraging the lads! As someone’s written, the man’s a walking contradiction.

But do we love the Wolves? Within each of us’s own financial resources, we now have to get behind the team. We can’t get away with being childish about our dissatisfaction with Moxey–if we are, we risk helping to sink the club.

We NEED to get the Premiership income and, if the worse comes to the worst, we NEED the parachute payments. If we were to stay in the Prem, of course that would be really great.

The fact is that we MUST get behind the team now. If we don’t get the new Premiership income or the new parachute payments, we are headed for permanent decline. Forget all the justifiable bad feeling and the internal infighting between the fans and Mick and Jez! It’s now or never, lads and lasses.

Whatever manager, whatever chief executive, whatever players Morgan provides us with, we have to go for it this season. Remember the new Sky deal. There may not be many more chances!

So the vision is entertaining attacking football? But what will the reality be?
We have the players to be an exciting and successful team but this manager has always cared much more about the goals against record than the goals for. The goalscoring record since he has been at Wolves has been poor as it was at Sunderland.
It’s the manager that needs to change and then the fans will come flooding back and the moans will disappear overnight.
We have been promised a 40,000 capacity new stadium and Wolves fans will fill it if they get promoted. But they will neither fill it or get promoted if the football is as dull as last season.

81 Its NOT just about winning - Its about entertainment value and how much of that did we get last season???

Secondly, Is Mr Smug really Moxey in disguise???

Finally, spending money on transfer fees circa £1m, £1.5m etc etc on “young & hungry” translated less wages - is ok providing you can bring in a good “balance” of a few better older players who can put their foot on the ball, control a game and stop the youngsters running around like “headless chickens”
Problem is Moxey is focussed on basic book keeping and wont pay a player who can still play for a Prem side a higher wage but yet believes a team without balance can/ should storm the league???

The Ince/ Irwin combo proved what can happen IF Wolves truely attempted to bring in two similar type older pro’s BUT alas Moxey is more interested in extreme budgeting - Why does he get a bonus for saving the club money??? & MM doesnt really want anyone having a different opinion to his own - as he would have his “loyal few” - ala S Ward Keogh, N Collins etc dazed and confused

Sorry but K Henry is not really up to the job as Captain - we really need a leader on the field of play with experience

Finally Moxey has gone from one extreme to another - one minute Wolves have the highest wage bill in the Championship, the next, we are trying to pay the least amount - No balance = No consistancy = Poor Entertainment Value

NB* the overused strap line “young & hungry” is nothing more than a cheap excuse and really means “cheap and cheerfull”
Yes with a few exceptions BUT without 2 or 3 decent older players in the squad we are aiming to do what we did last season - a sure fire sign of this is the 4 year extension of N Collins contract - a less than average player who no one but MM wanted

And if you remember, wasn’t it Sir Jack Hayward who wrote off £40 million of debt when he left the club as a good will gesture, making Moxey’s job of balancing the books a little easier? And for the remaining few who still think he is a genius in transfer negotiations…It was he who opted out of selling Kenny Miller for £1.5m with a few months remaining on his contract, only to lose him for nothing in the summer. It was he who refused Paul Butler a 2 year deal at 31 but gave Joakim Bjorkland a 1 year deal aged 32. And remember the days we were linked with Dean Windass?? That got the kaibosh because he was over 30. Two years later we buy Frankowski who was 32, and three years after that, Windass scores the winner to get Hull promoted! Now I’m not saying everything is Moxey’s fault,(past managers have their part to play) but on such vast wages, he should be far more accountable.

AN OPEN LETTER TO MR MOXEY

    Dear Mr Moxey

You ask the fans to purchase tickets for next season. I give the following reasons why your wish may not be granted based on last year’s performance of which I will now remind you.

1 Commencement of season advocating the young, hungry stars who will lead us to Premiership glory

2 Having performed abysmally against lower order teams, including those promoted from the First Division, the team finds itself in tenth place by Christmas.

3 Employing a manager who relegateD his previous team and now finds himself at odds with the players he manages in addition to poor form on the pitch and places on the transfer list all those players he originally purchased bar one.

4 Failure to gain promotion despite all the hype and being embarrassed by the likes of Reading, Wigan, and Hull who have all come from the First Division, overtaken your team and gone on to Premiership glory while thE team still faffs about in this division.

I now ask a question of Mr McCarthy.

You have stated that wolves are the best team in the division. In that case, should Doncaster
(another team from the lower divisions)beat you at Molineux and go on to the Premiership - will you resign? Hopefully Mr Swain in his column will ask this question and print your response.

Excuse me Jez but if you haven’t already got the message - you’ve been rumbled!
Nobody’d listening anymore mate. I’ve renewed because I love my club but the shambles you’ve made of running it has driven many away and here’s why ;-
    1) You have consistantly failed to balance the books. Losses have outstripped surpluses ever since you’ve been here.
These losses would have been ten’s of millions of pounds worse had not Sir Jack bailed us out.
    2) You’ve been party to some of the worst transfer dealings in the clubs history, e.g. allowing Miller to go on a Bosman, releasing Jason Roberts for £200k while simultaneously paying over the odds in fees and contracts for a catalogue of player failures (e.g. Robert Taylor, Thomas Frankowski).
    3) Your version of factual events has been questioned by successive managers, e.g. Colin Lee feeling obliged to ring a phone-in on Radio WM to deny your claim that the sale of Akinbye was a ‘footballing decision’.
Love them or loathe them, Hoddle and Dave Jones also had similar grievances (e.g. Hoddle over your infamous programme notes and Jones over whose decision it was to offer Paul Butler only a one year final contract).
    4) So many day to day issues have been ballsed up.
e.g. (a)The ‘bomb-scare’ at the penultimate Molineux U21 international which finally kicked off at about 10pm because our stewards hadn’t even had sufficient basic security training to discriminate between wedges of sarnies/explosives. (b)Last seasons undersoil heating failure at the postponed Scunthorpe match.
5)You personal wealth has increased disproportinately to the fortunes of the club. You scrapped Prozone because we needed to ‘cut our cloth’ and all that whilst simultaneously awarding yourslef double that amount as a bonus for the Camara loan deal. By the way, is it true that we continued to pay Camaras wages while he was at Celtic?? But the most grotesque example is the c£450,000 you paid yourelf in the year following our RELEGATION. Compare that to the c £250,000 Peter Kenyon received following Man Utds TREBLE WINNING season.
    6) You have increasingly ’spun’ your way out of confronting fans’ concerns rather than honestly addressing them. e.g. Last seasons reprehensible tactic of using young players as PR spokesmen ( Kightly at the Fans Parliament and Keogh’s Express & Star articles) to shield yourself from personal accountability.
And there’s more, much more but I think I’ve made my point.
In short Moxey, since you arrived you’ve become a millionnaire whilst we’ve achieved precisely nothing.
There’s only one beneficiary of you staying any longer and that’s Jez Moxey.
For God’s sake Morgan, get him out and you’ll go a long way towards tempting the disillusioned back !!

#122, Bridget & Tony. I think you have the thread of this correct. However Moxey plays to the man who pays his salary. He placates Morgan by keeping Morgan’s investment in the black. His job actually isn’t about making Wolves a premiership team its finding ways to con us fans into paying for season tickets.

A low cost manager with cheap second rate players add to the gambit of keeping costs way down which equals a middle of the road championship team.

Make a little extra by “fattening up” conference players to move along at the end of the season at a profit. Maybe add another 11,000 seats to get more fans in and it is easy to see what we have right now.

We have a middle of the road championship team which is profitable and unlikely to have any major changes in the forseeable future. Why would Morgan change something which makes him money? Oh I didn’t mention the football aspect, reason? there isn’t one!

The thought of TRULY building a team to move up makes Morgan’s banker very nervous along with Moxey who has no idea how to achieve it and still stay in the “black”.

A great posting, you have captured all the salient points about the club’s business plan.

The move to Premiership football is high risk.

At Championship level the club is geared to maximize profits, and profit from the selling-on of young talent. That is what the “young and hungry” bite is all about.

Get them here at a cheap and cheerful price, get them playing at Championship level, and then sell them on at the right price to the Premiership.

So far, Wolves haven’t sold any of last years emerging talent, but that is only because it is still early in the transfer cycle.

The Premiership big-shots have to move about first, and then the club’s top-up their benches with promising Championship youngsters.

Jez should stay away from the public side of Wolves and make no off the cuff statements, if Wolves are to be taken seriously. You can see from the reaction to this article that people find his babblings embarrassing. If you meet him ask him to show you the photo of “Ivan” he carries around with him. Ivan is a Baggie’s fan.

To quote David Brent AKA JM: If you can keep your head when all around you have lost theirs, then you probably haven’t understood the seriousness of the situation.
Does that ring a bell ?
Would be great to see Jez sport a goatie and do the David Brent dance !

    IT’S BOSTIN BEING A BAGGIE !!!

138 Does that mean we can expect Jez “David Brent” Moxey to do his dance???

First game at the Mol Jez - as a half time “treat” for the fans - and to make it more interesting can you do it with a pie in one hand and a pint in the other? And dont forget to swing those arms - er er e er e er, er er e er e er……
