Mclean asks for new deal

mclean.jpegPeterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony says Wolves target Aaron Mclean’s head is ‘all over the place’ as he revealed the striker’s demands for a new contract.

Mclean is on the transfer list at London Road after demanding a move last week following Peterborough’s decision to slap a £3m price tag on him.

That hasn’t stopped him joining the Posh squad on a training camp in Marbella.

But despite his preference to come to Molineux, Wolves haven’t budged on their £1.5m bid they had rejected several weeks ago.

“I’ve always promised Aaron I wouldn’t stand in his way if a Premier League club came in for him,” said MacAnthony.

“Aaron phoned me last week, thanked me for my support, asked if he could take me up on my previous offer of a new contract and said he’d now like to stay at the club.

“I then spoke to his agent for a good hour on the phone, but I nearly fell over when he set out the terms Aaron wanted.

“Anyhow I offered Aaron the best contract this club has seen and his agent laughed at it. Aaron asked for a transfer the following day.

“I’m afraid his head is all over the place and this happens in football.

“If Wolves believe in him as much as I always have, they know the price it will take to buy him.

“If they don’t then he stays and plays for his place in our team as per his current contract.”

Meanwhile Wolves and Bristol City have refuted suggestions on the rumour mill that there has been a £2.5m Molineux bid for Robins midfielder Marvin Elliott.

City insist there have been no bids and Wolves say there is no interest in the player.

And contrary to weekend reports, Wolves say they have no interest in Sunderland striker Michael Chopra.

I think it will probably best to move on from mcclean now, he just seems to be looking for a payday, and 3m is a lot to pay for a 25 year old who has only played in league two, I think we should move on to other targets

  2. Deanowolf said:

    Move on please.

Vastly overpriced. Poor stats bar one season in League 2.

Too much of a gamble we alreay have one of those in Vokes. Go and get somebody proven instead.

  3. Golden balls said:

Why waste anymore time on this? Move on Wolves for God sake!

  4. raffo said:

hear we go just beating about the bush as useal just sign some players man and get out this league,

  5. Happy_baggie said:

Another player using our clubs to line their pockets.

If he has asked The Posh for a better deal before handing in a transfer request, then wolves should do what we did with Gera and Phillips and walk away.

Are ALL players like this now - just following the biggest pay packet - even if they are already on mega money ?

Don’t think we will see another Bully or Bomber again.

  6. Matty B said:

this guy is a complete waste of time and money!
get ourselves a couple more REAL buys, and get ready for the season!

  7. stewart said:

IF and its a big if theres any truth in the coments from the “Posh” chairman then i think we shoul avoid signing Mclean, sounds like another badge kissing egotist, or footballer as there also known

  8. Bridget & Tony said:

Not ANOTHER Mclean story!!! Mr MRI needs a reality check if he thinks that a Prem club is going to stump up £3m for a striker that has not played above the division that Posh have been promoted from, as he has not proved that he is capable of “banging them in” at Championship level

  9. The Jackal said:

I’m not too bothered about the Mclean saga - it’s pretty dull and he is overpriced. What DOES bother me is that we aren’t in for Marvin Elliott. The guy is just what we need if we’re looking to dominate midfields this season, too long we’ve had a powder puff presence in the centre of the park. I only hope if we aren’t in for him we are after a similar player as I can see it being a struggle again with what we have currently.

leave him and go get some 1 else and we dont need hm we got anoth strikers as it is try getting bera or try getting Lee naylor back? top class player

  11. Bournemouth Wolf said:

Really disappointed to hear Chopra was not on the wanted list. He as opposed to Maclean has a track record and a very good one at that of scoring goals in the Championship…

If they want a good striker then he is one!!

I think wolves have moved on from this deal, I think its peterborough doing all the talking! nearly every day their chairman or mgr comes out with a comment, they are trying to raise his profile and keep clubs in the hunt as they want the money really

  13. S*U*P*E*R said:

This really is getting ridiculous now. Just another blatant attempt to get us to hike the price up and get free media attention to his player, who is obviously going to leave.

If anyone is stupid enough to pay £5million for a 25 year old nobody who scored a few goals last year, then rather them do it than us!

It’s very rare that when things get this public, we sign the player anyway, so I think we can say goodbye to McLean and Berra. We’re not the sort of club to do our business in public, and as far as I’m concerned, the club has confirmed that the deals are dead.

I honestly cannot remember the last time we brought a player that we were linked with. Kites, Ward, Elokobi, Stearman, Vokes, SEB, Keogh, Jarvis, none of them were ever picked upon by the press as potential targets, so I don’t expect to know the identity of our next target either.

Leave MM and JM to do their jobs, and hopefully we’ll pull off a couple of good deals in the next couple of weeks!

    :)

there are 2 sides to every story. Lets not judge him on the chairman say so. Anyway I dont think this transfer is likely to come off, besides we have around 10 strikers on our books.. we need to ship some out before making room for mclean or anyone else for that matter.

These comments are the ones that were made last week. No new comments from Wolves so it would suggest that Wolves have moved on but the E & S has not

  18. PSDT said:

Marvin Elliott on the other hand may be a cracking buy, but again all hearsay.
I’m sure I’d seen somewhere that Mulgrew has backed out of the Swindon move too which would be a blow to the coffers….

  19. pip said:

Berra deal is far from dead, shareholders meetings going on at Hearts who are 12 million in debt, they might have to sell players, just the way football is now.

  20. finchy - wolves said:

for the money posh want etc surely we can find a proven striker at this level ie chopra, dave kitson, bobby zamora. i would like us to get kitson if possible as i see blues are also looking at him howard or watson for midfield i think are a must and then get a centre half in!!!!!

    Ok…barring David Jones!

  23. notawolvesbooer said:

I think Mclean wants very much to come to wolves, but posh asking silly money for him is an atempt to keep there. So if they say hes worth that amount then hes asking for a contract that reflects that, really all hes trying to do is force there hand and let him come here. good luck hope it works out, but 1.5 mill is top.

  24. Stoke Wolves said:

Who is this MacAnthony he must have a bob or two Marbella is upper crust! He must be an idiot though if a premier league club will pay £5 million for a fourth division player. Forget McLean stop wasting time on him and Berra come to that and go get another quality centre half.

  25. Fan_Rich_Wolves said:

This guy is a complete joke. don’t waste the money!!!

  26. No ifs or buts said:

As soon as he went to Marbella ( where MacAnthony lives) it was a matter of time before he backed down.

    McLean will stay at Peterborough

  27. haggstone wolf said:

Based on news reports ive ready, this whole saga stinks from top to bottom. If Posh think he’s worth 3mill + add ons (he isnt and they dont!!)then they should pay the going rate to keep him at the club. If McClean is as good as he thinks he is he should keep his trap shut and concentrate on winning the golden boot next year playing in league 1, afterall time is on his side.

Yet again, the only party to come out of this with any credit is Wolves. I like the way we do business these days.

  28. fred said:

Why is the P’boro chairman telling us this then ?
I’m sure it was them that said wolves were doing all the gossiping/unsettling - hardly looks like that now does it ?

If we could get him we should be going for Kris Boyd. Rangers have an abundance of strikers. The problem is, we don’t pay the wages. I saw that Ebanks-Blake was only on just over £8,000 - not great for a good goalscorer!

will we please forget mclean? 3million is too much for an unproven 25 year-old who hasn’t played higher than league two. we would pay less for a player who would do a better job, like nicky maynard or steve howard.

come on mick, move on to other targets because all the mclean stories are gettin boring and all the same.

    My starting XI v.s plymouth:

    hennessy
    foley

    stearman
    elokobi

    kightly

I’ve been saying all along that this is madness. £1.5 million was always far too much in my opinion. I’m glad most are now in agreement rather than attacking JM for not getting the cheque book out.
I know some have compared this guy to Vokes as a risky signing but there’s a world of difference. Vokes cost us very little for a player of his promise. He is also very young and still developing. Like all investments it’s a risk buying a youngster. Definitely worth it when you weigh up the Vokes equation. The same can’t be said of McClean who is far more expensive and is already 25. By that age it is rare for a player to be very wide of their natural level of ability.
An investment in Chopra would be money better spent. He is proven at this level and can be useful in midfield too. Now £3million for him would make far more sense!

    35) I agree with you mate but in this day and age, Wolves as a club have lost out due to our rigid wage structures. Why do you think we are only signing youngsters….? We lost Carsley to the Blues for this reason!

  42. WvDaveee said:

Hes nowhere near worth that. Wouldnt even get in our team. Waste of money. MOVE ON!

  43. Bridget & Tony said:

40 MM will NEVER want to use Freddie Eastwood - His ego would not allow it and besides it means that MM would have to learn some tactics and we couldnt have that could we???

  44. Golden Blood said:

I have to say that it is not really McLean to blame. Posh are holding out for a ridiculous amount of money here and in the meantime McLean is all over the place. He will be half the player next season. Playing for a club he really does not want to play for.

I I were you Mr MRI I would take 2 million and jog on. Mt MRI is just trying to stir a little interest becasue Wolves have now gone cold on him.

We are obviously looking after new targets. MESSAGE TO ALL CLUBS. MOXEY WILL NOT BE BOSSED AROUND. Tak a bid or leave it. No more beign ripped off, great to see.

we don’t need ANOTHER striker!, all he want’s is money, he couldn’t give a damm who he plays for, we need players who have a passion for football not just how much money they can make out of us.

  51. Jacko said:

I know that wages are a big factor as is age (33 as opposed to 25) but if Hull are interested in Roy Makaay for £1.5m, that makes £3/5m for Maclean looka bit strange.

  52. matt_posh said:

31 - Word is McLean was offered £9k a week by Darragh MacAnthony to stay at Posh!

  53. Paddy said:

How about Clinton or Dave Nugent. Apparently Palace have withdrawn the contract offer they made. Dave Nugent would be more costly but would be the better long-term option for me.

  54. Ugly Klown said:

I, as a POSH fan too hope this story ends now too. We love Aaron as his energy, fantastic leap and goal scoring abilities have certainly made him a fan favourite. Of course we don’t think he’s worth the £5 million, but I don’t think anyone see’s the point. We don’t want to lose him, we have him under contract until 2011 and the price quoted is a bugger off we’re not interested price. We don not need the money as Dmac our chairman is minted and wants to drive us onto the Premiership. I know money doesn’t guarantee that and that’s why he wants to keep the good players. Even the Marbella training camp we are at is a world class training venue, he’s not playing at this. So again I hope this story ends, I hope you give Freddie a chance, I hope he bangs in goals galore for you and I wish you all a successful promotion season. Keep it Posh.

  55. Bridget & Tony said:

54 MM wouldnt know what to do with strikers as he hasnt a clue about tactics and expects strikers to play like ball winning midfield players and score a hat trick each game aswell

No disrespect but we dont believe that Wolves need strikers - we need decent centre halfs with pace, a creative midfield player, a decent manager and a CEO that has the club at heart and not his own self interests

  56. Sandwell massive?? said:

Is anyone else showing an interest for this guy??

    erm……..no.

£1.5m + a good wage is to generous.

Complete daydreamers at Peterborough. Footballers do get injured too, then how much would he be worth Mr Fry.

Tek the money and run minnows. We are suckers at Wolves for chucking money away on over rated players.

What “brain food” is MM feeding these players on???
