Meanwhile, George Elokobi believes Wolves’ best summer signing could be Michael Kightly’s decision to sign a four-year deal as he revealed promotion “was within our grasp”.

Kightly penned the new terms three weeks ago to end speculation on his future after being linked with Everton, West Ham and Middlesbrough. Elokobi has only been at Wolves since January and has played less than a handful of games with Kightly.

But the former Colchester left-back has been highly impressed with the England under-21 international and is convinced he is a Premier League player. “I was delighted when Michael signed because he’s a great player and I always wanted him to stay – even though I didn’t tell him!” said Elokobi.

“Keeping one of the greatest assets at Wolves shows the club’s ambition.

“He’s going to carry on improving like all of us, but keeping him here just shows how far the club wants to go.

“That can only help us achieve promotion to the Premier League this season. He’s definitely a Premier League player but he’s chosen to stay with us which is good to see because he’s happy to stay and it shows he wants the same goal as the rest of us which is taking Wolves into the Premier League.”

Elokobi believes keeping Kightly threw out a positive signal to the rest of the Championship that Wolves mean business this season.

And he has seen enough of the squad and their growing team spirit already to believe his team-mates can reach the Premier League in the coming campaign.

“Promotion is definitely within our grasp,” added the Cameroon-born defender. “We’re a united group of players and people can see the team spirit is already high.” Kightly had been one of the lowest paid players before he re-signed but insisted he never wanted to leave.

Yet he was still questioned by some fans for bringing the matter to a head.

The winger has nothing but praise for the supporters, however, and is keen to continue his excellent relationship with them.

“From day one the fans have been nothing but brilliant to me,” said Kightly.

“They have been different class and that’s why I’ve made the step up so well – because they have backed me all the way.

“For anyone to question my commitment and think I don’t want to play for the club is beyond belief. I wear my heart on my sleeve, but I don’t just perform for me – I do it for the manager, the club and for the fans.”
