The 27-year-old victim was hit in the stomach during the daylight attack in Albert Street, Pensnett. He was today said to be in a stable condition at Russells Hall Hospital, Dudley.

Neighbours said he staggered to nearby newsagents Kal & Brothers News to get help after the shooting.

Shopkeeper Kaleem Khan, aged 31, said: “The shop was full of customers and we saw this man was covered in blood. It was all over his head and stomach.

“He said ‘I’ve been shot, please call an ambulance’. I didn’t know his name but I recognised him as he comes into the shop to buy beer now and again.

“He told my brother he had walked out of his house and a man in a car had shot him and driven off.

“One of the customers ripped up his shirt to cover the wounds and I rang for an ambulance but we decided he was in no state to wait so my brother, Hakeel, took him to the hospital instead.

“Doctors said if we had waited five minutes later he would have been dead.”

Police were called to the scene at around 6pm on Saturday and sealed off Albert Street and nearby roads.

People were told to stay indoors as a precaution and Mr Khan’s shop in Queen Street was also closed.

He said: “It is really shocking. He had just walked out of his own house and was shot. There are too many people with knives and guns these days. It makes you worry about what could happen to you.”

Police are appealing for a taxi driver of a Mondeo to come forward as they believe he may hold vital information. It is thought two people may have been involved in the attack.
