Hopes for speed cut after deaths

A host of safety measures have been lined up for the notorious A449 Stourbridge Road, including a review of the speed limit, following campaigns from residents desperate to see action on the road.

Despairing campaigners have been demanding the speed limit on the road is cut following 12 accidents in the past three years.

Luke Woodstock, aged 19, was killed in a smash on the road last month, and four weeks later Jagjit Singh,  51, died following an accident in the same spot.

Highways chiefs laid a temporary new surface on a notorious bend on the stretch of the road last week in a bid to stop skidding.

Today it was confirmed that a speed review was a priority as well as major structural repairs.

James Bailey, area highway manager for Staffordshire County Council, said a “significant structural repair” would be likely to take place within the next five years.

He added: “The speed limit will be reviewed in the very near future, as part of a holistic exercise that includes a number of other similar priority locations.
