Cutting a dash for charity run

Hundreds of fundraising runners splashed through the streets of Wolverhampton to pull in cash for sick children.

It didn’t matter whether they ran, jogged or walked the 4km course, the runners who braved the downpours yesterday were only there for one thing - to raise cash and make dreams come true for poorly youngsters.

Wolved legends Steve Bull and Don Goodman joined Wolverhampton-born TV presenter Suzi Perry and fundraisers from across the region and beyond for the annual Run For Dreams event.

With anoraks, umbrellas - and even bin bags - at the ready, more than 300 runners, young and old set, off from Molineux yesterday morning and braved the miserable conditions to support the city-based national wish-making charity Promise Dreams.

The organisation, which was launched in 2001, makes dreams come true for seriously ill youngsters whether they be vital medical treatment, holidays, toys or even a meeting with their favourite celebrity.

It was bin bags at the ready for Tettenhall family Dave and Kate Sheldon, who took part with eight-year-old daughter Robyn and 11-year-old Glyn.

Dave, aged 46, a Wolverhampton City Council worker, said: “Kate took part this year and so we all decided to have a go this time around.

“It looks as though we brought the bad weather with us.

“It’s a bit of fun for the girls, but me and Glyn have got a competition going. It’s nice to be able to do something for a good cause.”

Glyn was the first youngster, aged between eight and 11, to cross the line at West Park yesterday.

TV action girl Suzi said: “Despite the rain, it’s was an incredibly warm-hearted atmosphere, everyone’s been so high-spirited. It’s been great fun once again

“It was wonderful to see so many children taking part. It’s great that we have a whole new generation supporting Promise Dreams.”

Wolves hero Don Goodman said: “The turnout at this year’s event was incredible and I’d really like to thank everyone for helping us to raise money for Promise Dreams.

“Despite the heavy rain, everyone has had big smiles on their face.

“Every single person who has turned up to day is really special in my eyes, because hundreds of people are here to help us raise money for those less fortunate than ourselves.”
