Pupils say farewell to head

Pupils at an elite Wolverhampton school have said goodbye to their headteacher who is moving on after 18 years in charge.

Dr Bernard Trafford made a moving speech recalling the time he spent with the children of Wolverhampton Grammar School, first as head of music and later as headteacher, as he addressed its annual prize giving ceremony for the final time.

This year’s ceremony, held at Wolverhampton Civic Hall, marked the end of Dr Trafford’s 27 years at the Compton Road school before he moves to take up the headship at Newcastle Grammar School. 

The prizegiving ceremony was attended by all staff, governors and 672 pupils.

Prizes were awarded to students in all year groups who had demonstrated particular ability, commitment and dedication in various subjects. Dr Trafford, 52, said: “If the pupils remember one thing I’ve said it is that they should carry on believing in themselves.”

Vincent Darby will take over the top job.
