Make or break for Jones

jones.jpgWolves player Daniel Jones admits he faces make or break time at Molineux this season.

The left-sided player is into the final year of his contract and faces a meeting with boss Mick McCarthy on Monday to see how he fits into the manager’s plans.

Jones is back at Molineux fighting for a crucial breakthrough after playing 33 League One games for Northampton last season over two loan spells.

That experience has given the 21-year-old the confidence to thrust himself into McCarthy’s thoughts as the squad kick off the countdown to their first friendly at Wrexham next Saturday.

But he still faces a battle to win a place against George Elokobi, even with Charlie Mulgrew set to complete a £125,000 move to Swindon and Michael Gray still to agree a one-year contract.

“It’s a massive season for me because my contract’s up at the end of the season,” said Jones. “It’s a make or break season for me.

“I’ve got 12 months left and if nothing happens then I’ll be gone. It’s just down to me and I’ve just got to do my best and if that’s not good enough, then I’ll have to play elsewhere.

“I haven’t had the chance to sit down with the manager yet, but I’ve been told I’ve got a meeting with him on Monday.

“Hopefully I’ll find out more then, but before we went away, he told me to come back fit and healthy and told me to do the best I possibly can and his best players will play. I’m just aiming for that.”

The Wolverhampton-born defender would love nothing more than to prove himself at his hometown club. He has been at the club since he was nine and got his debut under Glenn Hoddle, playing 10 League games.

“The main reason I want to do well is because I’m playing for Wolves – all my family are Wolves fans,” said Jones. I’ve always supported Wolves.

“I love it here  and I like all the lads, they’re great lads who are willing to pull for each other.”

DJ WE’RE ALL BEHIND YOU SON!..YOUR QUALITY AND YOUR ONE OF OUR OWN. HOPEFULLY MUPPET WILL SEE SENSE AND GIVE YOU A FAIR CRACK.

UNLESS THE CLUB ARE PREPARED TO SIT BACK AND WATCH MUPPET SLOWLY DESTROY ALL THE TREMENDOUS WORK ACHIEVED BY OUR ACADEMY STRUCURE..THEN A NEW CONTRACT SHOULD BE A FORMALITY.

GIVE IT YOUR BEST WHEN THE CHANCE COMES AND THE SOUTHBANK WILL GIVE YOUR OUR FULL SUPPORT.

The club needs to decide if he is a midfield player or a full back cause he is in danger of being a master of neither. I personally think he has more chance of making the grade as a full back. That may be his best chance at Wolves also as Elokobi still has a bit to prove and may turn out to be a centee back in the future.

If that numpty Collins can get a new deal, then surely Dan Jones is also an investment that needs to be protected! To get things into context, the usual amount of comments on these articles is roughly about 16. The Collins signing his 4 year deal had over 151 comments!! Nuf said!

    1. you have a short memory as this so called “muppet” was the one who saved us when all but our ground staff walked away to better things.

    There are no ‘muppets’.

Danny Jones faces stiff competition on the left hand side. I hope he does well but if he’s not good enough he knows he’s off. The interview shows he is much more mature and responsible than no 1 above.

    Good luck Danny.

Oh well at least Neil Collins has got a new bumper 4 year deal!! They will prob let Jones go fo 20K

The attitude all our players seem to have when interviewed is so incredibly positive that I am convinced that MM has got a squad that will work together and demonstrate the very best ‘work ethic’on and off the pitch. I’m starting to think that Mick really has got a squad that will go places.

Unfortunately, my memory is so full of the daft things MM did and said last season, I can’t recall anything any further back.

Dan has been told that “his best players will play.”

Perhaps he should have a word with Denes Rosa. I imagine Mick said the same thing to him! Mind you, this season, he won’t even have reserve matches to prove himself!

Tch tch - Now C’mon Wolves fans play nicely ;-)

DJ should have been ahead of N Collins at left back and certainly ahead of S Ward on the left
But last season has gone now and we hope that MM gets his act together or else we can see Morgan soon running out of patience

My preference would have been to play Daniel left midfield when we want to close the game down. I hope he comes through, very good free kick specialist.

  15. BillWolf said:

let him play on the left wing, when jarvis is too knackered from running 80 mins, jonesy also has a very good shot on him, good young talent, and he also brings an arial presence.

This I am sure is what MM and the rest of the mol backroom is aiming for this coming season and I for one am happy to say that I believe the signs are good. I think we stand a better chance of a top two finish than for very many years. Dan Jones is the personification of the type of great attitude young players require.

Sorry to relate No 13 but MM’s act is being a top class manager.
Enough to say its just a walk on part.

    “Muppet” ?
I think you mean McCarthy dont you son ?
Jones is not that good really he is’nt honestly he is too slow for this level to be a winger. he is fantastic at set pieces & Crossing and thats it nothing else.

    Molly

    Get over it!!!
Rosa is rubbish even Cheltenham did’nt want him and he has been on the transfer list for god knows how long !

  20. G&B said:

Southbank obviously you dont go to games with you making such divvy comments.

    I’ve nothing to get over.

I just want to warn Mr Jones not to put too much store by what Mick says to him at their meeting on Monday because the likelihood will be that it proves worthless and I wouldn’t want a promising, young player to stall his career on the basis of the words of someone who so regularly changes his tune!

  22. southbank barmy army said:

RA RA..YES I WAS REFFERING TO MCARTHY NOT DJ LOL.

G&B LMAO OH DEAR YOU REALLY ARE A SAD LITTLE MAN ARN’T YOU. I’M SO HURT I’M GONNA CRY NOW!!!!!

DJ will be big hit-a Wolverhampton lad too, from a family of Wolves fans. Perfect. Lets all make a positive start to the season and get behind the players and the manager.

    Daniel is one of us!

I will never forgive Morgan if he allows one of our best to leave our club!

I took the trouble of going over to Northampton last season to watch him play, it was worthwhile. He has matured and blossomed there, but I think that now he needs higher class football to advance him further. IMHO.

Any Wolves fan that thinks mm is going to get wolves in the top ten are kidding themselves.I was out with John Richards and Bert Williams the other night and they also think MM has lost the plot.We cannot understand the players he has bought. Here goes a repeat performance of last season or worse.Sorry lads.

  26. Dave said:

Southbank barmy army - I’m sure everyone on here is fed up of your muppet views.

You don’t understand much about football. So far Dan Jones hasn’t looked very convincing in his first team appearances. He still has a lot to prove.

I hope he does just that, but suggesting MM is responsible for him ‘not getting a chance’ is nonsense.

  27. Wolves boo-boy said:

we need to give Dan Jones his chance, with the right coaching he can make at this level and have a good run in the team. But we come back to the coaching issue, we dont have the skill in this area of player development and the local lads wont get their chance, so its back to a manager with cheque book mentality. We know from the past, we cant BUY a winning team.

Southbank you plank, Blackburn game, pint in the southbank, or first home game of the season. Because I just want proof you ACTUALLY attend games!!
Really, you are worse on these pages than Happy for winding people up, the only difference is Happy makes soom sense in his comments, where as you are just a cap locks moron!

And again for the last 5 months, CAPS LOCK next to the letter A!

Oh and I noticed you left the healthy debate over on the collins contract story, it actually went into depth about football…..noticed how you went quiet when that happened!

Ra Ra , david beckham has no pace, int he one of the most popluar footballers in the world. Who has he played for. Manchester, real and now L.A . You dont need pace to be a winger.

DJ much better than elokobi in my opinion from what i have seen.

  32. Tracey Smith said:

Most wolves supporters thought you deserved a chance last season daniel, expect the stuborn muppett that is mccarthy. Hope you get your chance this season, you have more class than george elokobi, just make sure you put a shift in!

  33. wolveswolves said:

Daniel deserves the LB spot. George is just a hoofer I’m afraid, a typical MM player

  34. wolf said:

Dan, if i were you i’d leave, MM showed his intent with all our home grown talent last season, he only played Wayne because he had to.
