Albion today joined the queue of clubs lining up to rescue England keeper Paul Robinson from his Tottenham rejection.
The Baggies need fresh strength in a department governed by veteran Dean Kiely and the untried Czech giant Michael Danek.
But Mowbray knows he must acquire a third keeper steeped in Premier League experience and Robinson, who has also talked over a move to Villa, was the subject of an enquiry last week.
Whether Albion take it any further remains to be seen as the cost of a permanent deal is off the usual The Hawthorns price scale, which suggests Mowbray is looking for a loan solution to his problems.
That has also prompted speculation that Scott Carson, the permanently for-hire goalkeeper from Liverpool who spent last season at Villa, was also the subject of enquiries from Mowbray.
But the Baggies boss is eager to keep strengthening his squad as he expects the pace of events to quicken following this week’s capture of Dutch defender Gianni Zuiverloon.
Mowbray says: “Nobody is hiding the fact that the squad is not deep enough at the moment, but I am very sure in my mind that we have to get the right ones.
“If it takes another 40-odd days then you have got to be patient on it. We can’t get them all in this week, we do have irons in the fire at the moment, as we have for the last few weeks.
“When they come to a dead end you move on to your next target. We are ticking a few of them along at the moment and let’s see if they are fruitful.”
Albion did complete the formalities of Graham Dorrans’s transfer from Livingstone yesterday for £100,000 – another Mowbray “gamble to nothing” which has become such a feature of his management style. He acknowledges that Dorrans is making a “massive, massive step up” but said: “We’ll get him in and training with us and assess things.”

I dont know about any one else but i would love to see a second paul robinson down the hawthorns!
Would be nice but not a chance.
Wages.
Couldn’t agree more Celtic, but I’d still like to see what Danek has to offer. I’m suprised we never got to see him last year.
Its a pipe dream if we cant keep our top players from last season what chance have we attracting a england international?
i sit near enuff behind the goal me n worcester would be holding our head in our hands everytime the ball come over,no thanks one robbo is enuff aye boing boing
I agree with all of you, it would be lovely to see Paul Robinson at the albion but the chances of attracting an england international and someone with wges like him are very slim, especially if villa are interested.
kiely not no 1 for the prem, too many silly errors were there to see,but the team got away with.not so in the prem.robinson would i think do a job, under less pressure than at spurs, would wind back his true form of afew years ago-james an example at pompey.we will have to shout robbo twice as much.
7.telford,he made a few errors, but he made some great saves to that kept us in some of the games deano will do for me aye boing boing
i like to see a decent keeper at the albion and robinson fits the bill. kiely s a good keeper, but we need someone that does’nt make errors like kiely does.We also need a keeper that can kick a ball. kiely cost us points as well.
kiely is not good enough on crosses, goalkeeper is proberbly the most important position we need to address we may need to spend big in this department as it could give us around 10 extra points by the end of the season.Go get him Mowbray

Absolutely brilliant keeper, always reliable for club and country…
We’ll see but think he’s over rated.
4 steven.
Like we’d never attract a top young Dutch player.
If we get Paul Robinson on loan there’s a strong possibility Spurs will still pay part of his wages. That’s quite common. Is he good enough? I don’t think he’d have become an International if he had played for Albion even when he was doing well. That’s the ‘London Thing’, just ask Derek Statham, Tony Brown, Jeff Astle etc. But as someone pointed out above, David James was always a good goalkeeper, now he’s the best in the country, bar none. Let’s hope we can pull him in on a loan deal. Kiely was probably just about big enough when he started out, now 20 years later, he’s a midget compared with many. That’s where the ability to dominate the box went in my view.
11,do you say the same things to your mates, with names such as,we8albion,albionscum,albionlowlife,

Is Stuart Naylor’s poorly knee any better? Could be worth a punt?
Could possibly be a master stroke. Although he’s vastly experienced, he’s still quite young in keeper terms. Goalies are notorious for going through bad patches while under 30. Apart from David James, Nigel Martyn and our coach Joe Corrigan are good examples of this. As someones pointed out, a club like ours where there’s less media spotlight may be just what he needs.
Then again of course, this may be just another of TM and JP’s smokescreens while they pursue other targets.
