Moxey denies Berra deal is dead

berra2.jpegWolves chief executive Jez Moxey has denied fresh suggestions surfacing that Wolves have failed with a £2m bid for Hearts defender Christophe Berra.

He states that Wolves’ last bid was £1.5m three to four weeks ago. Speculation now suggests Hearts are trying to hawk Berra to a Premier League club for £3m.

Yet Wolves’ position remains the same. They have not budged on their second offer and they haven’t heard from Hearts that they have missed out on the 24-year-old recently-capped Scottish international.

Wolves remain keen on Peterborough striker Aaron Mclean but won’t pay the £3m up front.

They have also been linked with Charlton striker Chris Iwelumo, after claims they had missed out on Manchester City forward Ched Evans.

There is another body at pre-season training at Molineux, with midfielder Karl Henry returning to training following an operation to have two wisdom teeth removed.

Whilst I feel we need another good central defender (as we have for two years now) we should not be held to ransom. If it’s not going to happen lets move on to the next young and hungry target.

After Collins signed his new deal yesterday, most Wolves fans will be looking for Berra to come in alongside Stearman…basically to settle themselves that Collins will not be a regular starter. Berra is the ideal candidate to bring in, young and hungry, Hearts’ Captain & an International. I just hope we are not haggling over 300-400k and end up missing out. How many times has that happened?

I agree, lets not get sucked in to this just beacuse everyone now knows we have money.

Agree with 1 - we don’t won’t people to see Morgan as the ‘golden tit’ as was the case with sir Jack, we don’t need to be paying over the odds just because we can, I have faith in Moxey to get is the best deals

Who else have you been linked with defensively?

I can’t remember anyone else off the top of my head, but I suppose you weren’t linked with Stearman until he’d actually signed were you?!

It seems strange to me that you’re constantly linked with Strikers when all of your fans are crying out for a Centre back and Berra’s the only 1 you’re publicly linked with…..unless I’ve missed it?!

i think berra’s class, from what ive seen of him, albeit a couple of scotland u21 matches, and 3 matches 4 hearts. i reckon with him our defence is pretty much complete, so i’d walk in strait away with a £2.5m bid. that shud get him. after all, if we dont go up this year, we all know hennessey (if not already), kightly and SEB will be going, along with any1 else who is impressive this year. what im trying to say is, we need to take the gamble!

  7. westbirminghamalbion said:

if nothing happens i think a.gardner from spurs would come for 2m & would be just as good if not better, dont forget look at what standerd berra’s been playing at.

Linked with Iwelumo and McLean. We still have several strikers at the club with no or little future (Elliot, Freddie, Bothroyd). We have also signed young Vokes who I’m pleased to see on board. What’s going to happen? As the season looms are we going to accept any half decent offer for such players. These “rejects” have cost Wolves a lot of money - sort out their futures. Looking forward to a successful year. Let’s start the season well and be the front runner!!

Lets stop mucking about here. Granted we dont want to be golden tits but if we are squabbleing over the odd half a million, lets not, get them in now and lets get the ground running in our pre-season games.

McLean, Berra and 1 extra midfield would be nice.

I would rather we took the money we were going to use on Mclean and spend it on getting a quality centre back, which is an area we have sadly lacked for a long time

Being publicly linked is irrelevant. Doesn’t mean nothing is going on behind the scenes. In addition before impatience sets in, the season starts in 5 weeks time and the transfer window doesn’t close until 31st August.

Whether or not we get Berra, I still think we will get a loan signing from a big premier club, but most of them haven’t even started pe-season yet.

    Keep the faith

16- I agree with you as it is ridiculous of that i would only keep craddock , stearman, elokobi and rob edwards. This means we need at least another 3 defenders realistically. I don’t think MM has got a clue really. More of what I think is on the kightly back maclean blog thing.

  21. Robert Perry said:

IMO we have no hope of going up whoever we buy.MM does not seem to realise the problem last year was not the attack but a lack of creativity in midfield and playing with two wingers does not help.If I remember correctly Bothroyd mentioned this in an interview with the Star.

I agree, there will be things going on behind all clubs doors that the press won’t know about, but it was an open question to all of you lot in orange if there was anyone else I’d missed that you lot had been linked with, as it seemed awfully quiet in regards to centre backs…..apart from Berra.

I would very much like someone like Berra here but I still think that Elokobi, Little and Lee Collins could play there and we should use Daniel Jones more. It is no good keep loaning out players. If they are good enough play them irrespective of age. Look at Keith Lowe, who has been loaned everywhere.

WE HAD BULLY FOR HIS WHOLE CAREER AND STILL COULDN’T GET UP.

SO, NO I’M NOT ANYMORE IMPRESSED NOW AS I WAS AT THE END OF LAST SEASON. PERFORMANCES, RESULTS AND ULTIMATELY PROMOTION ARE WHAT IMPRESS. SO ROLL ON AUG 9TH, PLENTY OF PRIDE AND PASSION..THEN HOPEFULLY I CAN BECOME A VERY HAPPY CLAPPER TOO!!!

  33. Nippy Lobo said:

We definitely need another central defender or, if we switch Elokobi or Little there, a wide defender. I agree with Bill (12). We shouldn’t even be thinking of McLean at that price until we’ve got a viable defence. With the present squad, a couple of injuries and we’re up the creek defensively. I’m not sold on Berra as such, but someone, please, Jez!

By the way, many people are saying the transfer market has been quiet, but just look at these stats (I can supply the names too):
Summary of total signings by Championship clubs from 1 May to noon on 4 July:
    Derby 8, Barnsley 5, Burnley 4, Crystal Palace 4, Swansea 4, Blackpool 3, QPR 3, Southampton 3, Wolves 3, Cardiff 2, Charlton 2, Coventry 2, Ipswich 2, Norwich 2, Notts Forest 2, Plymouth 2, Sheff Utd 2, Birmingham 1, Bristol City 1, Doncaster 1, Preston 1 and Sheff Wed 1.
    Players: 58
    Clubs active: 22 (92%)
Clubs active more than once: 17 (71%)
Clubs active 3 times or more: 9 (38%)
Clubs active 4 times or more: 5 (21%)
Clubs active 5 times or more: 2 (8%)
Clubs active 7 times or more: 1 (4%)
Clubs not active yet: 2 (Reading, Watford)

I’m not criticizing Wolves here–I think David Jones is one of the best signings of the summer by any club. But just don’t think other clubs have been quiet!

  34. Molly Knew Mick said:

I’m not sure what’s more pathetic; fans with no understanding of the finances at Molineux or how deals are structured telling Moxey how much he should pay for prospective signings or the fact that we seem to be setting a record for the close season of most rejected bids!

I’ve said before that we should be like Jim Magilton at Ipswich or Roeder at Ipswich…identify your genuinely important potential signings, negotiate under the radar and only go public when the job is done. I know that requires the selling club to keep their mouth shut but Magilton and Roeder have proved it can be done.

We bid for anyone and everyone and go public on them all…and then buy from whoever says, “Yes.”

Dear E & S, do me a favour and just tell us when we’ve made a bid and it’s been accepted….like Stearman….and may that be the model for how the club do business throughout the summer!

  38. Joe said:

Why is it that Wolves always seem to be involved in protracted transfers? Why can’t we make a number of bids and ‘kick into touch’ those that are obviously non-starters and move on?
Too much time is spent chasing our top targets which often are too difficult to sign while the next in line targets may be more freely available but end up signing for clubs elsewhere!
Berra may be a good player but how long have we been chasing him for now? We should move onto another target, the same thing with McLean because the price on his head is extortionate and no-one will not pay £3M up front for a League 2 player and quite right too.
We may have money to spend but spending it unwisely has been a trait of ours for many seasons and one we must rid ourselves of.
All clubs barring the ‘chosen few’ need money from transfers, what we have to do is identify those players, make a bid and pay what we believe is the right price, if that price is not right, move on and not lose a target because we stubbornly believe we can get him!

To get back on thread though, we need Berra, even speaking as a “happy clapper”, Im flumoxed by the new contract awarded to Collins. Hes far too inconsistent for this league. Stearman looks a great signing, lets trust in Mox & Mick to do the deal with Hearts & Berra.

I have to say we really do need to get Berra and Shackell because that would make about 6 good defenders. If i was mcarthy i would get rid of the rest and use people like mark little, daniel jones and others for the defence. If mcarthy does the above we are sorted with the defence. Midfield I think we need anither 2 wingers(as backup just in case jarvis or kites are injured) and also another midfielder but someone who is attacking but has some flair and creativity like Koren from the baggies.Striker wise we need another player who knows where the net is because at the moment we have only got SEB(unless eastwood stays). Striker wise we could get matt derbushire on loan. Hes proven himself at premiership level which is better than getting maclean which will probably cost 3 million and is a massive risk.

If we keep changing Manager we will keep our status year after year, and only sticking with someone will pay the dividend in the end. My patience has been tested in recent years, under Mick as well - we all know the Neil Collins is a cart horse and we all hope and prey one day we will find our next Lescott, however, I am optimistic this year as we are trying to sign good players with a future, and we have held on to our best players.

I agree with getting rid of Freddie, Elliot and Bothroyd. I agree with getting rid of Potter and Ward, but we have to bring in players at the back, and I would like to see us shore up the back. We also have the fortune of arguably having the 2 best goalkeepers in the league, who’s number 1?

I grew up watching a ‘class player’ called Peter Zelem playing for Chester. We didn’t miss out on HIM, but he famously didn’t look so class at Wolves’ level. Trust the professionals (we have to) not to waste OUR ticket money.

I had a season ticket in the Billy Quiet stand last season, I haven’t bought one this season for obvious reasons. I was brought up not to waste money!

Another season of Mad Micks rubbish football is just a waste of money. The man is tactically inept, and most managers who came to the Molly last season outplayed him tactically. So Mick blames the fans for not singing loud enough!

Then he insults the fans in the E&S, and then does not have the bottle to face the fans on a lap around the ground after the last home game. The idiot didn’t realise that he would have mostly been applauded!

His disrespect for the Wolves fans will never be forgiven by the ones who matter, the paying fans and not the armchair fans who happy-clap Mad Mick on this board, and accuse the real fans of being disloyal.

The stupidity of the happy-clappers trying to brag-up the nothingness of what is happening at the moment is pathetic. If there was an ounce of intelligence amongst them, they would realize that we are destined for another season of dire football and no promotion at the end of it!

All that has changed is the names of the victim players. Mad Mick will screw-up again, as he has done all his managerial career.

Just go onto Wikipedia and see the summary of his managerial career. He has the gift of the gab, but just makes it up as he goes along. It always ends in tears, as it will here!

I would like another signing, yes! But don’t exaggerate–we’ve got Sam Vokes and Stephen Ward in addition to Sylvan Ebanks-Blake.

And that’s not counting Stephen Elliott and Jay Bothroyd, whom, as yet, we have not succeeded in selling (not to mention Freddy Eastwood).

As for Stephen Ward, we’ve seen him mainly as winger and never fully fit. What would a fully fit Stephen Ward be like in the middle up front?

If we buy another striker–great! But right at the moment that would mean we have eight! Even with eight strikers, if the present defence is not bolstered, we probably face a relegation battle!
