Boss hails new man Zuiverloon

Albion boss Tony Mowbray hailed Gianni Zuiverloon as “another piece in the jigsaw” after completing his £3.2m signing.

Zuiverloon officially became the Baggies’ fifth summer capture but the first of the new faces Mowbray intends bringing to The Hawthorns, in his efforts to strengthen the Championship title winners for next season’s Premiership challenge.

The Holland U21 international, snaffled from Dutch top-flight outfit Heerenveen, became Albion’s most expensive defender after passing a medical and signing a three-year Baggies contract, plus a further year’s option in the club’s favour.

He takes the club’s summer spending to almost £10m – an outlay all but covered by the cheque received from Aston Villa yesterday on completion of the Curtis Davies deal.

The fee gleaned from that will pay for the permanent captures of Roman Bednar, Luke Moore, Kim Do-Heon and Graham Dorrans.

Mowbray said: “Gianni’s a player that originally came to my attention during pre-season last year when we played Heerenveen.

“We’ve followed his progress throughout the season and I’m delighted he has agreed to join us.

“From our point of view we’ve got a very talented, young footballer who is eager to prove his qualities at the highest level.

“He has good defensive qualities, is a good athlete, is comfortable on the ball and wants to improve.

“He will add good competition for places to the squad and is another piece in the jigsaw.

“Hopefully he is the first of a few new signings to come in as we continually look to improve the squad.”

Zuiverloon played in all-but four of Heerenveen’s 34 league games last season, scoring twice to help them finish fifth in Eredivisie.

Good luck to our new Dutch friend.

Now to my mind the signing of Kevin Phillips is paramount for us.

He cost us 700,000 which is 350,000 a season.

Do we really want to let him go for nothing?

I think after his lapse at villa he refound his scoring touch with us.

Who can say he cannot reproduce it in the top flight?

Please Jeremy Peace, sign this man up quickly, or I fear we may live to regret it!

Well done TM on this one. Fast, technicaly gifted and young. If he`s as good as Gullit and all the other dutch pundits say then not only will he be a joy to watch but when the big boys come sniffin we`ll get at least the 9m we got for Davies.
There will be about 5 more thru` the door before 31st August. Shame about Phillips but theres no room for sentiment and the fact that he`s decided to stay in the CCC suggests that he knows deep down his legs won`t stand the pace of the prem, at least now we know where we stand and can go out and add a striker to the squad.

Things seem to be happening the ‘Mowbary Way’ at long last. Hope he’s a good buy but has Mowbary got family in Holland or something. If so Mick could do worse than to ask him about players over there.

Your guy is crazy not keeping Phillips. he must be bored scoring against Wolves and really needs the challenge of scoring against Bolton etc etc.
Stay with Tescos kevin. Keep away from Molineux.
