Blog: Player movement - at last

zuiverloon.jpeg

At last I have something to write about, this week we have witnessed our first signing of the summer (discounting the loans becoming permanent), writes blogger Jarrod Hill.

We should all have known it would be a typical Mowbray signing, unheard of on the media rumour mill, a player from Europe we know little about and hopefully like many others from last season another Mowbray gem.

So who is Gianni Zuiverloon?

Well I will not bore you with all the information you can get from other sites or wikipedia, so what I have done is contact someone who knows all there is to know about Dutch football and get his opinion, (he was on holiday in the Domincan Republic, so I look forward to my phone bill).

Karl works for Netherlands Public Broadcasting and is a self proclaimed football fanatic who has lived in Holland for seven years.

Karl said, “Gianni is rated very highly, technically good, quick, good passer and likes to get forward. Not a bad tackler, ok in the air, his main weakness and this is as much due to his age, is his positioning, but his pace often gets him out of trouble.

Overall I think West Bromwich Albion has made an excellent acquisition and I am a little surprised he has been allowed to leave without other more prestigious clubs being interested. I think this maybe due to the speed of which this deal was done.

The price may seem high for a right back (I also asked if he could play centre half but Karl said he is more suited to full back due to his willingness to get forward), and believe it or not that maybe another reason why other Dutch clubs including Ajax could not buy him, but this guy has the capability to be in the full Dutch squad in a couple of years and then £4million euros seems cheap”.

He also went on to say, “Gianni is similar in style to Gael Clichy of Arsenal, in fact it had been rumoured in Holland that Arsenal had been tracking him recently”.

Personally I think it is an interesting signing, at £3.2million I would not expect him to be warming the bench too often and that will mean Hoefkens losing his place. However with Zuiverloon possibly competing at the Olympics with Holland U21s, he will not be available for the start of the season, giving Carl an opportunity to hold his place at right back.

Well as first signings go it was typical Mowbray, and I look forward to seeing who next rolls through the door. I expect next week to be a busy week in the transfer market, with players returning to pre-season training and professional football in this country returning to full time work (if you can call it that).

Keep them coming Mobs I need something to write about!!

Looks like a good signing TM may have done it again. Lets hope he is as good as the others unknowns which came last season.
    Boing Boing.

Amazing how many people Arsenal are supposed to be after!

Nice one Jarrod, especially the phone bill! One can read slight reservations in your man’s assessment of this player but a similar view of the departed Davies would have produced reservations too and I don’t mean the cracks in the glass feet joke. Potential is what we have paid for, add a sprinkle of Mowbray Magic, a dash of panache, another winner??

£3.2m does sound a lot for us to be spending on a bench-warmer - but with us needing 7 subs this year we need much more quality further down the team.

And lest us not forget - WE ARE PREMIER LEAGUE!!!

Do the Sky Premiership fixtures come out today?
I hope they don’t move our first game - my mate’s a season ticket holder at the Emirates and he’s promised me his ticket for the first game as he’s on hols until the Saturday. If they move it I won’t get to go!!
    :(

    Hi Jarrod

I’m pretty sure hoef has also played CB in his time so that may be in TM’s thoughts. Also if Robbo decided to follow KP out of the club then maybe he could be swithced to LB….??

Either way, this new lad sounds a real coup for us, and who knows, TM may yet turn him into a CB.

  6. SuperMaths said:

I’m liking the link with Saha too!
Although, as we know, it’s unlikely we’ll sign anyone that we’re linked with!

Do you reckon it was us that bid for Pavulychenko? Sky saying they’ve turned down a bid from an un-named English Prem side that are NOT in the Champions League?

    There’s a 1 in 16 chance it was us!

not a bad tackler,ok in the air and often finds himself out of position?

  8. Happy_baggie said:

On the Phillips thing… if he goes to the Blouses, what price Mcfadden coming the other way ??

I’ve said previously that i would welcome him to our club - I think he has real talent, although he may be a bit pricey for us.

Just read the rumour about Louis saha - now THAT would be a coup…..

  9. Terry Wills. said:

Sounds a typical Tony Mowbray signing! If he’s turns out to be another Robert Koren or Filipe Teixeira no one will have cause to complain.

For all that i think it will be extremely difficult to replace Kevin Phillips should he sign for Birmingham City.

Any chance of a a new striker Tony (?)otherwise the goals for coloumn will have to rely on a ‘raw’ Ishmael Miller, Roman Bednar, not yet played in the top flight, and Luke Moore.
Agreed Luke has scored goals for Villa in the Premiership but up to now still has a lot to prove at the Hawthorns.

I would literally wet myself if we signed Saha, I’d be extatic to see someone of his calibre yet there is still that little niggling feeling that its all just a pile of rubbish…come on Louis come down to West Brom!!
Looking forward to seeing Zuiverloon play, hopefully the next Curtis Davies!

Hey Terry Wills, is that you i spotted on the Albion dvd season review of last season standing outside the cemetary??
Your famous mate, fancy being able to say your on Albions dvd of the best season for many a year!!!

Louis Saha, mmm no chance, i cant imagine what his pay packet is like!!

we have been linked with a Venezualian striker aswel, which means he wont be coming either!!

  13. stewart said:

Would you get value out of Saha considering his injury prone past??

  14. wbabomber said:

Im predicting the next player in will come from Scotland, anyone fancy a bet??

  15. SuperMaths said:

    14 - Bomber

That’s about as likely as Fulham signing someone from Scandinavia!

    Oh.

  16. baggieboynick said:

happy your right he can play centre half as well as right back.
as for saha if and its a big if he does stay fit
hes a quality striker and has scored loads of goals in the premier league for both fulham and man utd and would suit our style of play.

  17. terryOXYMORONbaggie said:

  18. Wbaforever said:

    Bomber

    You crafty sod !!!!!!

You know something dont you ?
I will avoid that bet if you dont mind, it would be like playing poker with Hilltop, only one winner, and it wouldn`t be me.

  19. glenn said:

Looks good—I hope he is a whole lot better than the other players we have signed begining with Z—Zubi, Zondervan etc but I trust TM. My son says that this guy has amazing stats on player manager and reckons he’s fab. Keep em rolling in

HIYA JARROD, HOPE YOUR WELL SON.

SO WHO’S THIS LITTLE GEM YOU’VE UNEARTHED THEN. LIKE MOST PEOPLE IN FOOTBALL..NEVER HEARD OF HIM.

TONYWBA..HOPE YOU AND THE MISSUS ARE OK AND ALL’S WELL WITH THE PENDING NEW ARRIVAL.

  21. Great_Barr Baggie said:

    14. - I won’t bet that bomber, but i will bet that the next player comes from Rangers, u fancy it??

    4. - I hope the Arsenal Match is moved, i’ve got a wedding to go to. If it gets pushed ack to a 5.15pm ko then i think i can make it, i might be a bit over dressed tho. haha

  22. RealistWolves said:

The link with Saha, could be possible. Would be dependant I guess on United getting the new Striker they’re seeking and even then are they likely to not want him to come off the bench, don’t know? If you was to get him you would also need to hope he stays fit, as a fit Saha could really be a big signing, but if injured merely a waste of wages. It’s definetly a player to be excited about though. Another problem is as Wbabomber says, would you really pay the wages? Also as Happy_Baggie said only the other day the Albion rarely sign players they’re linked with.

Not yet bought the DVD from our Championship Winning season (isn’t it great beeing able to say that!) but if it refers to the funeral of the late Jimmy Dugdale, yes it was yours truly who was proud to pay a well deserved tribute wearing the famous Blue and White striped shirt.

Have to agree with you on Louis Saha because if we could even contemplate matching his wages then surely we could have afforded to kept Zoltan Gera at the Hawthorns?!

I think there’s 5 teams definately worse than us at the moment, and there’s always the surprise “too good to go down” team, so that makes 6.

Relying heavily on my SuperMaths, I think that makes us finishing 14th.

You heard it here first ;)

    Re - The Training Pictures

I’m fairly sure that “Dodge the Javelin” (picture 5) is a little harsh for the first day back!

In my training manual that’s not due until the second week!
How out of date am I?

  51. Cyril Randle said:

Terry, you had arranged to be OUT mate so I had arranged to look after your missus. You did say I could. Well, I can’t have you watching, I’d be second best and my ego couldn’t take it. I know she holds up a 9.9 for you, but best I could hope for would be a 5.

  52. terryOXYMORONbaggie said:

    Cyril
If anyone is a 9.9 in my life, then it just has to be you, you are charming and funny, a true gentleman in my eyes :o)
    Uggabuggaz from me to you

  53. Cyril Randle said:

Ajay, I am sitting here thinking of giving up football! xxx What greater honour could any man offer a woman after such a delightful response. Whoops, we nearly had a typing error there, I managed to get ‘k’ in before the ‘l’. That would have got me a ban from the E&D or a photographer to film the proceedings to put on You Tube.

  54. Shropshirebaggie said:

I don’t think realistically we have a chance of signing Saha mainly due to his wges, not even sure if the rumours are true.

Paul Robinson I think we have a more realistic chance of signing.

I’ll be off to the Shrewsbury game, I work in Shrewsbury so I’m only 5-10 mins from the ground depending on traffic.

    BOING BOING!!!!
