Phillips poised to join Birmingham

phillips.jpegStriker Kevin Phillips is poised to quit Albion with neighbours Birmingham emerging as favourites to secure his services.

The 34-year-old hero of last season’s promotion to the Premier League has failed to reach an agreement over a new deal.

Although Phillips is tempted by one last blast at English football’s top flight, there is now growing confidence at St Andrews that they will persuade the proven goal machine to take his talents to Birmingham.

Championship rivals Derby, having already signed nine players, are also desperate to hire “SuperKev.”

This is no doubt in the wake of his exploits with Albion last season, which saw him named the Championship’s Player of the Year, after a astonishing return of 24 goals from just 30 starts.

The Blues, always ready to pay big money when no transfer fee is required, believe they have lured the out-of-contract former England striker away.

They are likely to offer the kind of wages package which blew the competition out of the water when they signed Lee Carsley recently.

The impending loss of Phillips is as much a blow to Albion’s PR as their team planning.

Despite Phillips’ tremendous input last season, manager Tony Mowbray was not expecting the veteran striker to complete anything like the same workload in the Premiership, especially after his amazing recovery from a serious knee injury which he feared threatened his career earlier this year.

The Baggies still came up with a two-year deal in an effort to re-sign Phillips, who became such a hero on the Brummie Road End with his decisive goal contributions.

Chairman Jeremy Peace was prepared to pay him a first year based on Premiership rates – but the second year would be performance-related.

That is the sticking point for the Phillips camp and which provided the gap Blues are poised to exploit.

It means Albion return to training with the prospect of having lost three key promotion winners to finish the last campaign out of contract .

Zoltan Gera took a £30,000-week offer from Fulham and Martin Albrechtsen chose to drop down a division with Derby.

    Gera - we couldn’t compete with £30k a week
Alby - he was not a regular at chump level, we didn’t need him
Phillips - would be good to keep him for old times sake, but if he goes it won’t be a big loss in the prem. He’s not gone yet though and this paper has been known to over emphasise the negative in the past.

I think that KP is great but i don’t think that any player should take this long to decide. At least now we can bring in a top striker with pace!

  4. wbabomber said:

For gods sake come to some understanding, i am convinced Phillips would still score goals in the prem. With Alby stating how awkward JP is to deal with this isnt exactly great pr when we are moving into a period where we will be trying to attract new players.
Please let this just be another media rumour!!

  5. Dekker said:

In with the New out with the old. Brave stance by TM on Alby and Phillips. Phillips had 3 separate knee injuries last year and the club physio knows his record will only get worse.
Loon the Dutch lad was a masterstroke and has shocked a few of the bigger prem managers that we got him now get ready for a bigger signing in the striker department.
This is definitely the way forward.

  6. BoingBoing666 said:

its a shame KP is set to leave us I was looking forward to seeing him pull off Rocky style come back against the big guns but alas it is not so!
All the best if you move Kev, coudlnt have hoped for much more from you.
We will definetly have to sign a replacement for him, no one in our ranks looks hot enough to fill his boots just yet.

JUST A THOUGHT, DO YOU THINK ITS ALL OF BEDNARS DRESSING ROOM PRANKS THAT ARE SCARING OUR PLAYERS AWAY HAHA.

  7. John Aston said:

Kevin Phillips could be the bargain of the season for Blues, I cant think of a club he has played for where he hasnt scored goals. 34 he may be, but he knows where the goals are and he isnt frightened to put himself about in the box, he is a proven poacher and will certainly be a constant threat to opposing defences.
However I must warn you Blues fans, if he does join you, you have to forget about the Villa connection, he doesnt work well under pressure from fans who can see no further than their blue noses, give him plenty of encouragement and he will reward you with goals…..take it from one who knows.

Sorry to see Superkev going but so be it.

Harold White’s medals expected to fetch £28,000. His story puts some of premier league players in perspective? A weeks pay for an average PL player - Gera on £30,000? One days pay for the top earners?
It would be a fine gesture if the club bought White’s medals and put them on display.

  10. Droitwichbaggie said:

Obviously KP is waiting as long as he can to get a 2year deal to secure his future, and who can blame him. Surely TM must be getting a bit annoyed though as he would need to know whether to bring in another striker or not?
If i had to put money on it though I would regrettably say its “bye bye KP”

  11. wolves1 said:

    Oh well, one more ‘out’

Gera and Philips are your best two players, they ran the show against Portsmouth. So what an earth your going to do without them is a bit worrying to say the least.

Still I’m sure that your new defender that knowbody has ever heard of will turn out to be really good! How did Mowberry find him without all the other premiership clubs finding out?
I’m sure he thinks all his aspirations have come true now he’s joined the Sandwell Giants!

  12. Baggie Boy G said:

  13. kev said:

oh well at least all the debate is over good luck kev i bet the wovles fans will be dreading facing b/ham now.lets hope we get a proven goal scorer to replace him real soon.

  14. Greg Cooper said:

Looks like Bloos are going for experience over youth.. might work, might not. What is certain is that on his day, Phillips is still a class player at Championship level, and I wouldn’t be disappointed to see him at Wolves despite his Albion links. I can understand why Peace wouldn’t want to offer him the full two-year deal bearing in mind his age (and also considering he didn’t look great in the Premier League before he left Villa).

Question is, if he does go, who will Albion get to replace him? Something tells me that Luke Moore won’t be quite as prolific in the Prem as KP was in the CCC.

  15. Dave said:

We should have fought to keep him. He is worth 10 Luke Moores in my book. This is a bad move for Albion.

  16. wolfmadgaz said:

i know he did well for you but what loyalty is he showing to all you fans who worshipped him?

mowbray is doign the right thing has he knows his knees could go anytime and must not give him 2 years contract because if he becomes injred then albion will ahve to pay a player who is injured. He is just after the money for the last bit of his career.

we dont need phillips we have Ebanks blake. top goal scorer!

  17. The Hoff said:

If this rumour turns out to be true, then it is probably for the best. KP didn’t have a great record at Villa when he was in the Prem last time and that was a couple of years ago. We need to move on whilst thanking him for his contribution last year. I’m sure he will score goals for the Blues when he’s fit but at 34 and with his recent injury record, don’t be surprised if he only ends up playing a dozen or so games.

Albrechtsen isn’t up to prem standard, he is defintely not key.
Gera could be good, but remember he missed lots of starts again last season, I have no doubt he will do a job, but key, surely you need a new dictionary.
Phillips scored lots of goals, in that sense he was key, but he already showed with Villa that he will now struggle to get many goals at prem level, we would have used him sparingly and not as a regular starter, if he goes to derby or blues good luck to him, he will score plenty in the championship if he keeps fit enough.
It was made quite clear to all of the three that if they didn’t want the Albion’s offer they could go, if thats what they do, so be it.
And Davies has officially completed his exit to Villa.
Meanwhile we have signed Zuiverloon, Moore, Bednar, Kim and Dorrans permanently spending 10 million so far and extended Danek’s loan. Without question there is more to come.
We are signing young hungry more technical players.
They wil fit in with the Albion style.
    I’m not even remotely worried.

I too hope it`s media rumour, but on this occasion i fear there may well be some substance to it.
Several weeks ago statements were being issued by the club, to the tune of, sure KP will sign a new contract.
The ensuing saga since those statements were made does not bode well, and each passing day it goes on unresolved, just serves to convince me that KP is on his way.

    Gera, mild disappointment.
    Albrechtsen, not bothered
    Phillips, gutted

We have trusted the management thus far, and i personally will continue to do so, however i feel that this is one departure that will test the resolve of the trust within many of our rank and file fans.

  22. terryOXYMORONbaggie said:

will he be so prolific at brum with less talented team mates,i mean they aint got a brunt, morrison, tex, koren, johno,to feed him,or a robbo to tek the defender out,aye boing boing

  23. wbabomber said:

I seem to remember last week saying that i beleived the whole “Phillips will probably stay with Albion” media parade as a vehicle by his agent of drumming up one last bit of interest in him.

  24. Wall Heath Baggie said:

Sorry to see him go but there is no room for sentiment in football. KP age is against him and I personally do not think that he would have the same impact in the premiership. I am in agreement with the stance taken by JP on this and I think the offer made is a good comprimise. I am more concerned in the signing of a replacement and am convinced that is being held up with the uncertainty with KP - so either way the sooner a decision is made the better.

  25. Great_Barr Baggie said:

7 - John Aston - I agree with your comment about giving plenty of encouragement to Phillips and getting the best out of him. Now can some of the baggies fans on here please do the same with Luke Moore this season. He is another confidence player and has undoubted quality, so lets get behind him and give him a chance.

None of our strikers will be as prolific in the Prem, but get behind all of them and the goals will follow!

  29. wolfmadgaz said:

19, because a player got relegated with a team that makes him a bad player does it?

that would mean half of your team are bad players, on second thoughts, your right!

i told you why would we want phillips when we have a young, strong, pacey and a great finisher in ebanks-blake! the top goal scorer last season!

  30. Doghouse Dave said:

Why hasn’t the Zuiverloon signing turned up on the Baggies website?
And hey! it was good to see Derek McInnes on there using our facilities and giving interviews. Full of praise for everything that is going on at the club. Top man!

  31. Happy_baggie said:

I hope KP doesn’t start saying he has to move because he has to “look after his family”.

The guy has been on thousands a week for years. If the Albion have offered him the type of contract as stated in the main story, all he has to decide is at what standard he wants to see out his career.

He has been fantastic for us and will always be a legend - but does he really need to take the Porn kings shilling ??

Surely the chance to play against the Villa, Sunderland and the top teams in the prem would be more important than a grubby few quid.

Still, we saw albre do it, and Gera gave up his football ambitions for a Harrods hamper, so nothing will suprise me now.

  32. Southbankboinger said:

Just when the dingles thought they were safe, SuperKev returns to haunt them again! Not sure he’s up to the prem these days, might’ve got a few coming off the bench, but if he does go it’ll be good to see him scoring against the Wolves next year!

It would be preposterous to think that our future season is in jeopardy because KP has decided to take one big last pay day.Football clubs cope with this event all the time , Mr O’Neil will testify to that.(Notice how angry he got with Davies honest comments).

Albion have already announced their future planning in the transfer market, even making plans for the January window

It is very quiet at the Hawthorns, TM is very quiet and then hey presto we have Zuiverloon. I am convinced that other irons are in the fire , lets be realistic it was always on the cards that KP was on his way. Furthermore KP was never going to play a major part in the team.He would be used sparingly probably for the last twenty minutes or so. I am more worried that his influence on his teamates will be hard to replace but I am sure TM is aware of that
So I arrive at the conclusion we all knew it would probably happen. TM and JP knew it would probably happen. No doubt they are speaking to Cristiano at this very moment or at least a future Cristiano. No worries.we will be fine

Poor Wolves got to face him again hey hum every cloud as they say

  36. Baggietastic said:

I’d rather he stayed but we can replace with better at this level. I’m more worried that the Dutch guy’s signing hasn’t been confirmed on the web site yet. Not another last minute phone call like the Irish guy I hope!

16 - Since when was there any loyalty in football? ..Other examples, Kenny Miller, Joleon Lescott - Ringing any bells?
Just like i’m loyal to the ‘club’, not the players, if one of them is no longer good enough then you sell them and bring in somebody better.
If Phillips wants to leave, so be it. I’m sure TM can find better players anyway. This is a replica of the end of last season, the stars leave and then what happened - Champions..

Clearly any reservations we have about whether KP can still cut it in the Prem have been answered by the man himself, no, or he would have signed a while ago despite the lucrative offers (surely he can’t still need the money!!) . Villa found this out 2 years ago and although he has been a fantastic servant to us he is now two years older. if he signs great, his experience will be valuable to our strikers if not all the best Kev you won’t be forgotten.

  40. SuperMaths said:

Does KP taking a 2 year deal at Blues mean he doesn’t think they’re going to go back up?

If he’s not good enough for us in the Prem this year (which is a fairly safe assumption considering we’re not breaking the bank to keep him) then what makes him think he will be in the second year of his Blues contract when he’s a year older??!!

  46. Oxon Baggie said:

Kev needs to look out for his family and get a settled 2 year deal so i dont blame him leaving. JP is clearly the problem. He has no grasp of how much he needs to spend in the Prem and this will lead to TM getting fed up and leaving at some point. Our biggest loss will be TM and i can se than happening. Others clubs will back him and the players.

Guys a serious Q, I’m not trying to cause argument, but really do you think you’ll stay up?
I hope you do, honestly and yes I’m a Wolves fan, but the gulf between divisions is so vast, what sets you apart from Derby and the teams that go up and come straight down? I know if Wolves had made it up we would be coming straight down we were not good enough last term, yeah you were the best in the league without question, but as I said the gulf is vast!.

dont really understand why he is leaving your team?his last chance to play in the prem, even if he is on the bench half the time,it wasnt long ago he was saying that he wanted to finish his career at the baggies!i think he will be a loss to your team……

I’m getting more than a little fed up with Albion’s transfer policy. Not satisfied with allowing their most creative player, Zoltan Gera, to walk away, it looks like Player of the Year and leading scorer Kevin Phillips is also on his way out of the Hawthorns.
People say that maybe there will be funds to bring in adequate replacements. Well there’s no “maybe” with either Gera or KP. Both are proven Prem quality and Albion could have secured both of them and save themselves trawling around Europe for replacements.

Albion should ask themselves this. How come that clubs have been virtually queueing up to secure these players? Doresn’t that tell you something about their quality? Wake up TM and JP….

Terryoxymoronbaggie, I bow to your knowledge of football, having read your posts about Stearman and Vokes. I hadn’t realised (and nobody else had until they read your wisdom) that every single squad member of teams who get relegated is rubbish. In my simplicity, I thought that relegated teams may have good players who seek to move to maintain their standards-thanks for your footballing expertise in clearing that up (perhaps you could explain why your team kept their squad together after relegation if players from relegated teams are all rubbish-I’m still struggling with that one). By the way, wise one, ‘probably’ isn’t spelt ‘proberly’. Aye, boing boing.

With the exception of some bloke that scored over 300 goals for Wolves(!), KP has to be the best this division has seen??? When WBA got promoted I was pleased to see the back of him …. and now he’s off to the Blues??? Nnnnoooooooo…..!!!!!

  97. terryOXYMORONbaggie said:

95,tiny,theres no need to bow,i shall now explain, firstly can you tell me where i used the said word, rubbish, you cant compare players being relegated from the prem who have played agenst the worlds top stars to players who have been relegated from league 1,2,3,as for keeping relegated players that was bad managment thats why we sacked him,aye boing boing

Why can’t Peace spend some of the Promo Payments and parachute payments on keeping his top goal scorer? He’s only got a few years left in him. I can’t believe these players are leaving us to join a lower league club! Lets get up there with the rest of them at the top of the Prem! BOING BOING BAGGIES BAGGIES

84 - not sure which dingle you are as you hide behind a new “clever” name of Brit… but Andy Murray made it very clear he aint a brit - he HATES the english and said he would back ANY team against an english one in ANY sport…. so to see his glum little mug puffing around centre court as nadal showed him up was fantastic.

You may be Scottish in which case i understand your support for him - but every englishman should be laughing his socks off now.

25 - Excellent point!! Moore needs our backing, so let’s give it him!!

If Super Kev goes, I will be gutted…..Iv’e got a super Kev T-Shirt and mask I was hoping to use more than just once!!

He’s been nothing but excellent for us, and I believe we should offer him a 2 year deal to keep him….second season to involve him with coaching if we stay up, or just to score bags of goals IF we go down.

If he goes, best of luck to Kev and I’ll definitely be putting a fiver on him being 1st goal scorer for Blues against the Dingles!!

all u dingles slating us awhether or not we stay up or cum down atleast were in the prem somwhere u will never be

Baggie Bird, haven’t we had our two years worth of parachute payments? I’d imagine they’ve been invested already by now.

  103. Tony said:

    97. OK what you actually said was “please note liecester (sic) got relegated and proberly (sic) so will you this season”. You’re right, you didn’t use the word “rubbish”, but what you are saying is teams who sign a player from a relegated team will probably get relegated themselves as a result, which is even duller actually. Remove the “oxy” and the name is spot on, aye boing boing.

Will be a sad day when KP leaves i agree with others he could be the difference between staying up and going down
The real villian out of this is JP i ask you this, how many promoted teams loose there best players before a ball is even kicked?
    GET PEACE OUT! Starts Here

    I’m not a Dingle & not a Scot!
I’m a Baggies supporter (season ticket holder BRE 30 years), you’ve been listening to hearsay, I saw the interview with Murray & he did’nt say he hated all things English, all of his comments were tongue in cheek, if you believe otherwise then your still a prat.
