A dog owner caught on CCTV kicking and punching two puppies has been sentenced for six counts of animal cruelty and banned from keeping a pet for the next eight years.
Jason Rennock, from Tipton, will not be able to look after animals on his own after the sentencing at West Bromwich Magistrates Court yesterday.The 22-year-old was caught on CCTV kicking and punching two six-month-old Staffordshire bull terrier puppies after they had urinated on the floor at the flat where he lived in Bolton Court.
Nicholas Sutton, prosecuting, told the court that after being tipped off by workers in the CCTV control centre, RSPCA officers went to Rennock’s flat.
“He became quite aggressive, raised his voice, and was shouting and the dogs both started to shake and one of them urinated in the sitting room,” he said.
Rennock has since signed the dogs, Sire and Benny, over to the RSPCA, however, one dog which was not immunised, has since died of an infection picked up in the kennels.
Raz Mann, defending, said: “What he says is if they (the RSPCA) had looked at the CCTV they would see him taking the dogs for walks three to four times a day, that he is loving towards the dogs and there’s no maltreatment.
“There had been a family problem and because of the frustration he found himself under, he took his frustration out on the dogs,” he added.
He told the court Rennock, who is currently a volunteer mentor for children aged seven to 18, had visited the dogs five times since they were taken away from him.
Magistrate Robert Mayou, said the case had “disturbed” the bench.
“Animal cruelty of any kind should not be tolerated,” he said. “The law doesn’t allow this and has severe penalties for offenders.”
Rennock was banned from keeping animals for eight years, given an 18-month supervision order, ordered to complete 120 hours of unpaid work and must pay costs of £800.
Speaking after the sentencing, RSPCA inspector Pam O’Neill, said: “What was important for this case was to get the disqualification order and I think eight years is justified. It’s a good result generally and hopefully he will learn from this.”
