Sheep were savaged to death by a dog which got into their pen at Sandwell Park Farm.
Two sheep were killed and five more had to be put down by a vet called to the scene following the attack at the farm in Sandwell Valley.
Horrified staff arrived at work yesterday to discover the mastiff-type dog covered in blood running around the paddock. Staff cornered the dog which was then taken away by police.
The 2,000-acre Sandwell Valley site in West Bromwich is a popular spot for dog walkers and although the pen is fenced off from public areas it would be accessible to a large dog that would be able to jump over the fence.
Matt Darby senior countryside ranger said that staff at the farm had been traumatised by what they saw.
He said: “This was an horrific incident. When staff arrived early yesterday morning the dog was still running around the paddock. A brave member of staff managed to corner it until help arrived to catch it.
“Police were called and have taken the dog away.
“Enquiries are now being made to try to trace the owner. Two sheep had been killed and the vet was forced to put down another five.
“We are all absolutely devastated.”
Police were today unable to confirm what had happened to the dog or reveal whether the owner had been traced. Anyone with information should call Sandwell Valley on 0845 1135000.
