Albion capture Dutch defender

zuiverloon.jpegAlbion have wrapped up their third summer signing with the capture of Dutch defender Gianni Zuiverloon.

The Heerenveen star has agreed a three-year contract, according to the Dutch club’s official website, in a £3.2 million deal.

The 21-year-old is perhaps best known in England for scoring the winning penalty in the mammoth 32-kick penalty shoot-out between Holland and England’s Under-21 sides back in 2007.

Highly rated in the Eredivisie, the right-sided defender was handed his debut by Ruud Gullit at Feyenoord.

A move to Heerenveen followed, where the youngster established himself as a regular both at club level and as a Holland Under-21.

Zuiverloon becomes Mowbray’s third summer signing, following the permanent captures of Roman Bednar and Kim Do-Heon.

Meanwhile, Albion’s new fitness guru today promised to make Tony Mowbray’s players “quicker, stronger, fitter and more resilient” for next season’s Premiership crunch.

The Baggies yesterday appointed ex-Birmingham City staff man Dan Harris as the club’s new head of sports science at The Hawthorns.

His appointment comes at a time when Albion acknowledge that matching the athletic challenge in “the land of the giants” will play a vital part in their survival prospects.

When Mowbray’s players return to training tomorrow, Harris will be waiting to brief them on a new regime aimed at adding even more steel to the Baggies squad.

“didn’t we say the same re Koren, Bednar, Miller, Kim, Teixiera”

Highly rated Dutch U-21, attacking full-back, quick with great technical ability! Sounds exactly like a Mogga type to me (doubt I’ll be having his name on my shirt tho!!!)

  11. Wbaforever said:

I made the point last week that names that were being linked, were without exception, strongly denied by the club, and TM`s business is not conducted through the media.

I think this latest capture reiterates the clubs policy, another “who” player that was not on the media radar, that will in all probability turn out to be another ToMo gem.

We await the next one with baited breath.

  12. dapster50 said:

Seems a lot for an unproven player!
He will have to cutb his teeth in the prem losing nearly every game. Give him one season before he gest totally fed up and loses all his confidence.
The dutch league isn’t too strong and he has hardly made a name there!

  13. wbabomber said:

Never heard of him to be honest, only a kid but apparently highly rated. Dont want to sound pesimistic but isnt this the part were someone else comes in at the last minute and signs him up due to JP dallying??

If he does sign it sounds a lot of money for a right back, and that amount of money suggests he wont sit on the bench, so what about hoofs??

Also, something else i have thought of this morning, if the pound is doing poorly against the euro, does that mean european signings in effect cost us more because of the exchange rate??
If it does maybe clubs wait until there is a better rate to go ahead and sign someone, does anyone know??
Oh and while im asking loads of stupid questions any ideas for lotto numbers tonight??

  14. Nedball said:

Must admit, I’ve never heard of him, but if we’re spending £3.2million on him, TM and JP must have done a lot of work on this one, and he’s prob worth a fair bit more than that too.
Let’s see who else comes in….the conveyor belt may have started rolling???

  15. Albion Wizards said:

Don’t care that I have never heard of him. His pedigree looks good and as TM obviously rates him then who am I to question the move. Its good to see that activity is taking place behind closed doors.

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha im loving it so it starts the mowbray way with quality holland under 21 star not bad start aftear all the dutch dont have good players do they

Re 4 - oh right, and would that be because as soon as Wolves make a signing our own board is inundated with the likes of terryLACKINGAVITALCHROMOSOMEbaggie making similar snidey comments? Let’s face it mate, it’s always going to happen so why worry about it? Hey, it’s only a bit of banter.

  18. WakeyBaggie said:

  22. Happy_baggie said:

If only we could sign well know players like Stearman - I heard of him when they told us who got relegated…..

This las is reated by Ruud guillet and the Dutch national team - sounds like a great aquisition.

Rumours that we only signed him to use up all the G’s and Z’s in the club shop following gera’s departure are unconfirmed !!!!

In theory european will cost more. Most companies buy Euros when they ae strong so if they go up they already have some at a good price. He must be half decent if we have spent 3 mill on him. Koren and Tex cost nothing like that and they are tremendous. Makes me laugh all the Wolves fans on here!!! Are there no 37 year old ex Sunderlanland Irishmen to sign???

You make a very ambitious signing (I’ve never heard of him as with the decent players at point 10), and the first comment is with regard to the Wolves.

Lets just hope for your sakes we don’t get to know your new signing for the same reason you apparantly know Stearman.

Dutch youth acadamies have an exceptional pedigree particularly those of Ajax, PSV and Feyernoord (where this guy started). I work for a Dutch company with Head Offices in Hoofddorp, Amsterdam, I had a conference call with a guy earlier and over there they hold this guy in high regard. Furthermore, for the last 3 years hes been a bit of a star on a little known game called ‘Football Manager’, surely not everyone can be wrong??… Hes got to be better than Albrechtsen either way. Good deal I think.

  32. S*U*P*E*R said:

All the Albion fans on here seem to have a lot of trust in TM, but is it really him that is picking out these ‘gems’ as you put it, or should you really be praising your scouts?

The best player in that Dutch U21 team was a striker, he went to Blackburn, couldnt get a game and was loaned in the lower leagues!
How is this guy worth this money?????

  47. Happy_baggie said:

28 - my opening comment was in response to the cranially challenged who just put “who” as their clever comment.

Now I have had chance to digest this signing i am getting very excited - as someone else said, the dutch youth set up is 2nd to none, and to get this lad now is a real coup.

In answer to 32 - I’m sure the partnership between TM and his scouts is fantastic… if they recommended this lad and TM snapped him up then thats good enough for me.

I’m also really pleased to see the fitness coach from the blues join us - we will need to be stronger next season and this is another quality staff signing.

Its strange how the signings that are off radar always come good, yet its rare that we sign a player we are linked with in the press - is someone playing a great game of poker ??

  51. Wbaforever said:

    SUPER

Fair comment mate, but ultimately TM makes the decision whether to sign them or not,
and the “trust” in the manager comes from the unknown players he signed last term that have turned out to be “good un`s”, not to mention his footballing philosophy.

    Villa Villa

You come on here and attempt to be spiteful,
    it dont work mate.
I just cannot take any of your lot seriously,
all those helium induced falsetto voices never fails to make me laugh.

  52. Wanderer said:

Why are you all praising a player who none of you seen before, possibly the U21 game which I watched too ages ago and he was o.k. At the end of the day its the Dutch league, Dirk Kuyt could score for fun in it so shows how good some of the defenders are. Just don’t get your hopes up.

  53. dutchbaggie said:

Gianni was a good player at Feyenoord, he was then sent out to “mature” at lesser clubs (meaning a lot of defending). He definitely has matures and is IMO a very good signing who excelled at the under 21-tournament. He’s a defender who is capable to attack as well. Good scouting by the WBA-staff

  54. Warren (Albion) said:

31- Ha ha, having said that Albrechtsen and Tamika Mkandawire are top players on my Champ Manager!!

13- Bomber. Most companies should (which means Albion probably don’t!!) protect themselves against exchange rate risk by having a hedging policy and purchasing foreign currencies at an agreed rate. With TM scouring the European market, I would hope JP has made allowances for this!!

Very pleased with the signing, hopefully more to follow. Having difficulty finding out if this guy plays as a centre-back as well. I hope so. The JP critics are all very quiet today!!

he ain’t going anywhere cos that will destroy the clubs policy and credibilty. Dream on…

I love these ‘who’ signings out of nowhere. Sounds like a typical Mowbray signing, young, quick and technically sound. I’m sure this is the start of several more to come. Who needs tabloids linking us with this that and the other, it’s all garbage. Keep it under wraps and get the player in quickly. Well done Baggies.

  62. Baggie lad said:

    Found this on Wikipedia:

“Gianni Zuiverloon started playing football at the age of six, when he got tired of other sports such as karate and swimming. His mother, who did not know much about football, called the first team she found at the yellow pages and surprisingly enough this happened to be Feyenoord. Feyenoord allowed Zuiverloon to join a youth training session, and after having proven himself at this session he was allowed to join the club, where he spent 11 years in various youth teams.”

You don’t get a regular U21 slot for Holland without some talent. More of Mowbray’s total football coming down the flanks, I don’t think I’ll be able to take it. Why oh why could’t we stick to grinding out 1-0’s the Megson way. Football is far too exciting at the Hawthorns these days, I fear for my dodgy ticker … I’m on the phone now to swap my season ticket to Molineux, the lack of excitement will be better for my health. On the phone now to swap my season ticket. You know it makes sense.

Lots of us saw him play, he played in the last pre season friendly before last season.

  66. Nedball said:

I’ve just looked on the website of another local paper, won’t name them, otherwise this will not be shown and it proves how the E&D really tries to down size any positives and plays up any negatives at the Albion.

‘Albrechtsen conceded he was likely to play second fiddle at Albion next term with Tony Mowbray believed to be eyeing Sheffield Wednesday’s teenage centre-back Mark Beevers.
“The chances of getting playing time will be better at Derby than at Albion who will be bringing in new players,’’ Albrechtsen added.’

Where was this in the E&D?
Instead it was portrayed as poor little Albion have lost their best player……I’ve read the back pages of the paper since I was a kid, but it still infuriates me how we’re portrayed in it! Sorry, rant over!!

If this player can tackle and pass then Iam sure
he can play at centre half along side NEIL CLEMENT
    with a defence of HOEFKENS/ZUIVERLOON/CLEMENT/
and ROBINSON then things start to look exciting.
And the other good news is that KIM wont be
playing for his country,so our midfeild isnt
    looking that bad either.
We also have 4 decent strikers to choose from,
so when you add all those things together you
    havn`t got a bad team.
Ive no doubt that TONY MOWBRAY has a squad of
players that can compete in the Prem.

100, dont think, you cant, thats why you support wolves.
we signed moore and bednar so this guy is our third signing, typical wolves fan, cant count past two.

..and yes i am in a position to judge fairly…i have been in the SB a couple of seasons ago and kindly left you a free carrier bag!

At the end of the day, it’s a signing with potential with a team that at long last play proper football. I do not know why Wolves supporters are so pre-occupied with another teams transfer activity. Having watched the game over 30 years, The Albion will struggle next year and Wolves haven’t got a long term plan in place with Moxey/McCarthy. Better off with another pairing. Shed the 1950’s history and get a formulae that works in 2008.

finchywolf….are you a baggie in wolves clothing???????

By the way Tesco followers I have a suggestion for a sponsor. get anyone concerned with fishing to sponsor you because you’ll both be picking stuff out of a net. In you case - the ball…..

notevenin topsix…please note that Leicester had one of the best defences and Stearman was their best player in that defence.

By this time last year Sunderland had spent millions on players and they struggled like mad most of the season. The ‘Mowbary way’ had better include spending a lot more cash…

Officially this is third signing after Bednar & Kim loans were turned perm, but really it is our first proper signing. Glad its finaly done & we’ve got our first player in. This happened last year, no signings for weeksn then bam! Loads of players that everyone was sayin WHO? And theses were players who turned out to be quality abroad players. his guy, a dutch under 21 international, he sounds a good player and after seein the style of Holland in euro 08 I think he will fit in well with us & how we play here at Albion. Here comes the Mowbray mastermind storm of signings!

  112. Wiseguy said:

YES another mowbray gem, we are prem league class! Super signing, unlike the mid-table SKINT Dingles, we are loaded! We have millions! More multi million pound sighnings to come! Hey dingles? 137. Steve Bull Stand said:

Looks like you baggies are over the moon with your new signing. Not that any of you have ever heard of him of course.

Having lost Gera, Philips and Albrechtsen plus Kamara, Davies and Koumas last year, it’s hard to see you having as good a team as the one that was relegated last time you went up.

And Mowbrays open style of football is something all Premier teams will love to play against. What odds you have the highest goals against record in the league next year. And without super Kev who will score for you?

  138. Wolves Mick said:

Quality defenders are hard to come by - so go for one no one has ever heard of- and you never know. I reckion he will do well in the Championship the season after next !! Gooin down the Mowbray way - oorrr roitt ?
